Bauer, David ; Charvát, Jan (advisor) ; Mlejnek, Josef (referee)
Aim of the thesis is to describe and analyse the role of nationalism in contemporary Czech extreme right movements. Its author has two fundamental objectives. The first is to evaluate strength and relevance of contemporary Czech nationalism within extreme right movements. The second objective consists in the analysis of nationalism itself, which should reveal the true nature of these organizations and their ideological platform. This thesis presents an overview of Czech extreme right spectrum. It was essential to select movements that mutually differ and therefore represent various manifestations of Czech right extremism. All three platforms can be classified as extreme right movements strongly resonating with Czech nationalism. They see themselves as patriots who defend conservative values and national traditions. Revue of The National Idea represents an attempt to create a sophisticated, intellectual forum providing conditions for ultra-right views and ideas. D.O.S.T. movement acts as a conservative "people's initiative", standing against multiculturalism and the European Union. The National Party is then an example of extreme political grouping with traces of populism, xenophobia and pure racism. Content analysis of these three movements is the main topic of the thesis. Examining their goals,...

Kucer, Maxim ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee) ; Calda, Miloš (referee)
The end of the year 2007, during the presidential campaign of Republican congressman Ron Paul, was the first time when the modern Tea Party movement appeared on American political scene. In a short period of time the Tea Party became a significant political force that endorsed many successful candidates in 2010 midterm elections and put pressure on established political parties to follow the will of the people. This thesis, written primarily as a political affairs analysis, examines origins of this grassroots movement and its impact on American politics. Put in a broader historical and socio- economic context, this work tries to create a notion of movement's probable future. The thesis is divided into three major parts. First chapter provides an insight into the historical origins of the modern Tea Party movement and also the birth of populism in the United States. The following part looks into the formation of Tea Party and describes the most important organizations connected with the movement and how they influenced its activities. The third part is focused on the most relevant Tea Party protests and in form of a case study assesses its influence on 2010 midterm elections.
Does the Northern League (Lega Nord) belong to the populist radical right party family?
Ferrarová, Miroslava ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The aim of this PhDr. thesis is to verify the hypothesis that the Northern League does belong to the populist radical right party family. The work is based on present politologic theoretic approaches, where the criteria determined by Dutch researcher Cas Mudde as typical for this kind of political parties have been applied for verification of the hypothesis. In verifying the hypothesis I worked on the sources content analysis. It was mainly the matter of Northern League's electoral programmes, political documents, party leaders and members' opinions published in the party daily La Padania, registrations of public speaches and interviews by party leader Umberto Bossi and other representatives, manifestos, radio Padania libera broadcasts and laws proposed by Northern League ministres to the Italian Parliament. Northern League was studied in the context of political and party system development in Italy from the unification untill the present day. The results of the analysis have confirmed the presence of all the signs complying with Mudde's maximal and minimal definition ie. nativism, authoritarism and populism. This result classes the Northern League among populist radical right party family.

Democracy is agon: on Machiavelli's populist republicanism
Bíba, Jan ; Znoj, Milan (advisor) ; Barša, Pavel (referee) ; Velek, Josef (referee)
The present dissertation deals with the relationship between democracy and agonism. It attempts to defend the idea that certain problematic aspects of contemporary liberal democracies are not due to their origin primarily in the change of social conditions (the massification of democracy, the growth of complexity in modern societies), that made the original democratic promises unrealizable, but in certain oblivion of the agon. The agon is understood as a constitutive feature of democratic society and its oblivion is seen not to be accidental. To defend this proposition I focuse on an interpretation of the dialogue between populist republicanism (Machiavelli) and elitist republicanism (Guicciardini). This dialogue is usually understood as one of the sources of modern democratic tradition. I try to explain that in Machiavelli's political theory two notions of agonism are present - pragmatic agon that sees conflict as a basis of social cohesion and strategic agon that is described as a ferocious egalitarianism employed by the second class citizens in order to gain equality from the first class citizens. These two forms of agonism are explained to form the axis of Machiavelli's notion of the political and also of a free republic and democracy. Guicciardini's elitist republicanism is shown to stand in opposition...
