Photography in the Service of Journalism: A Social Semiotic Analysis of the Winning Pictures of Czech Press Photo (2006-2015)
Patáková, Veronika ; Řehořová, Irena (advisor) ; Fišerová, Michaela (referee)
This thesis deals with visual communication in the form of photography. Explaining the theories of Roland Barthes and Vilém Flusser we point out the tight relationship of this medium with reality that obscures its constructive character. The witness role of photography seems to be essential in the context of journalism, where we are offered a story by the pictures that is however mistaken for reality itself. The thesis tries to present practices of media discourse that make us perceive an event as newsworthy. It draws on the theory of news values and the methods of social semiotic analysis and applies these to the winning photos of the contest Czech Press Photo (2006-2015). We highlight the semiotic resources used in the meaning-making process in relation to each picture. The results show that the preferred constructed news values are negativity, aesthetic appeal, proximity and personalisation and that the winning photographs mostly strengthen their semblance of being strictly informative.
The Comparison of News Values within text concerning handicapped and non-handicapped sport
Kulíšková, Anna ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Halada, Jan (referee)
Presented in this bachelor thesis is a qualitative analysis that is focused on the comparison of news values, in relation to athletes with a disability and athletes without a disability, in articles published in Mlada Fronta DNES (a Czech newspaper) at the time of the 2008 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing. In addition, the further analysis will be done, of the news values that are given to Olympians and the values given to Paralympians, and whether these preferences are reflected in the overall presentation of both groups of athletes. It can be concluded that the articles about the Paralympics are shorter, more vague and overall of a much lower standard than their Olympic counterparts. Indeed the reader does not have to get full picture of how the games went, who won, who lost, and why and how the athletes lived in Beijing. The Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing are the most recent top athletic events that can be compared in terms of news coverage. It is on purpose that the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver (2010) are overlooked, as even though they are more current, there are major differences between the numbers of athletes and sports, which, in terms of news coverage, make them incomparable. The thesis further examines and compares the information about Olympic...

Through qualitative content analysis, I compare newspaper articles published before and, also, after the opening night of this play in particular newspapers of temporary Austrian press. With the help of articles published in the Profil, Salzburger Nachrichten and Neue Kronen Zeitung, I present how mass media are able to stir deprecating reactions and how they develop technique of scandalization, how they use stereotypes to influence public opinion, or, how they reflect upon each other. I also take a deep look into several concepts, which gradually became a part of discourse in mass media and society. In the first place, it is a piece of rhetoric "Freiheit der Kunst", meaning "art freedom / freedom in art", next, calling the author "Nestbeschmutzer", at the time a popular label, and calling the director with the humiliating expression of "Piefke" and "Schuft". A number of newspaper articles which were published after staging Heldenplatz was far smaller than a number of articles published prior the opening night. Scandalousness of both Bernhard's drama and its later first performing was still deepened by the Neue Kronen Zeitung tabloid. However, the Profil...
