Effects of the El Niño / Southern Oscillation on the climate of New Zealand

The climatic phenomena El Nino, Southern Oscillation (SO), their interaction (ENSO) and effects of ENSO on the climate of New Zealand is investigated in this bachelor's thesis. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first one (chapter 3) explains the terminology, general connections and conditions favorable for origination of an ENSO event. The second part (chapter 4) summarizes the main research related to ENSO effects on the climate of New Zealand. In this part not only meteorological and climatological studies are mentioned, but also hydrological or dendrochronological studies. The last part (chapter 5) is based on my research which examines influences in SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) changes to temperature and precipitation variables in New Zealand. During El Nino events the yearly temperature amplitude in Northern part of North Island of New Zealand tends to be bigger than the amplitude during La Nina events. This conclusion is based on correlation analysis between SOI and temperature datasets. Impact of SOI changes on precipitation variability was not confirmed.

Protection of personal rights in continental system and common law

With the increased global infringement of personal rights, it is necessary to be aware of the protection in the different legal systems, especially Anglo-American. Even if the consequences are to be felt in the domestic legal order, the enforceability is recognized under the foreign legal order. The protection is worldwide and through the case law from the European Court of Human Rights the two legal systems - Common law and the Civil Law are penetrating the legislation and the case law in respect of the institute of the protection of personal rights. The doctorate thesis presents the complex introduction to the area of protection of personal rights in the Common law, especially in English law, Commonwealth countries and USA that has not been presented yet for the Czech legal professionals. The thesis explains theoretical concept of the Common law and its background for the purpose of explanation of differences of examined legal orders. The institute is explained on the key historical case law that led to establish the Common law principles. The thesis uses the current and topical legal cases and problems that the orders face in the 21st Century.

Mixed member proportional representation in New Zealand

The thesis is about New Zealand House of Representatives electoral system. In introductory part is briefly presented the political system of New Zealand. Then is currently used electoral system, its genesis and impacts of transition from the first past the post to mixed member proportional system researched. Thesis is in its effort focusing on segments of electoral system and trying to identify its problematic points and to introduce alternative electoral system proposed to the electors in referenda. The thesis is using the electoral studies methods, especially quantitative measuring of attributes of electoral system and party structure within the House of Representatives. Implementation of mixed member proportional electoral system returned New Zealand towards highly proportional electoral results and raised the number of relevant political parties and thus created the praxis of coalition and minority cabinets. Transition to mixed member proportional electoral system, which occurred as a result of referenda, also helped to solve a certain crisis of polity perception connected to first past the post system, which was that time in use. Demographic view on the population of New Zealand in the period 1991-2018

Demographic view on the population of New Zealand in the period 1991-2018 Abstract The objective of this study is to characterize the key events (economic, social and historical), which occurred during the 20th century, that subsequently influenced New Zealand's population development and population structure in the period between 1991-2018. This period was determined based on the data availability and the presumption that the impact of the selected events started to manifest on the population after 1991. To describe the population structure, we used age pyramids, aged-child ratio, young-age dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio and mean age. For description of demographic processes of fertility, mortality and nuptiality in the studied period, basic indicators were used, which allowed us to fulfil the aim of the thesis. Data for their calculation was taken from the online database of the New Zealand Statistical Office, Infoshare and selected publications. China's Sharp Power: How China Seeks to Influence and Coerce its Neighbours

In my thesis, I will answer question of what is sharp power, how China use sharp power and then on 4 cases illustrate that China has different strategies of influence operations. In Japan, respectively Okinawa, China is focusing on their common history and trying to lure Okinawans away from Japan. In South Korea, China exploit Korean economic dependence during the THAAD dispute to their advantage. In Taiwan, thanks to common cultural ties China wants to change everybody mind about Taiwanese "status-quo". In New Zealand, China utilize overseas Chinese community to spread Chinese propaganda. In the end, I will compare each country situation and find out where China's sharp power was effective and where it wasn't.

Attitudes of Czechs towards Individual English Accents

The dissertation is focused on the description of the distinctive phonetic and phonological aspects of the Manchester, New Zealand and Irish accents. The theoretical part contains a comprehensive description of the segmental and suprasegmental features of the above mentioned accents in contrast with British Standard/Received Pronunciation. The practical part contains the recordings of native speakers from Manchester, Dunedin, Glasgow and Newsbury. It is followed by a research conducted in the form of a questionnaire, whose answers should help to discover the Czech students' attitude towards individual accents. Evolutionary history, systematics and biogeography of Southern Hemisphere hydrophilid beetles (Coleoptera)

The research presented in my PhD thesis consists of phylogenetic, biogeographic, taxonomic and ecological research of Southern Hemisphere water scavenger beetles (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) with a special emphasis on New Zealand. The introductory chapter provides a brief outline on the break-up of Gondwana and geological processes that shaped New Zealand and its fauna. Furthermore, the diversity of New Zealand Hydrophilidae and worldwide diversity of the hydrophilid subfamily Cylominae and its taxonomic history are illustrated. The scientific part of the thesis contains 4 published papers and 2 manuscripts. The first study recalibrates the Coleoptera time tree, providing new age estimates for the Hydrophiloidea, among others. The new age estimate is implemented in the second study, a phylogenetic study that reconstructs the biogeography of the 'Gondwanan' Cylominae beetles. The Cylominae, whose name was reinstated through nomenclatural priority over Rygmodinae in a separate paper, are found to consist of two tribes, Andotypini and Cylomini. The disjunct distribution of Cylominae is shown to be partly the result of vicariance and partly of long-distance oversea dispersal. Doctoral Dissertation PhDr. Kathleen Brenda Geaney English-Speaking Communists, Communist Sympathizers and Fellow- Travellers and Czechoslovakia in the Early Cold War (Anglicky mluvící komunisté, komunističtí sympatizanti a podporovatelé a Československo v počátcích studené války) Abstract The dissertation is a study of some of those people with Communist Party affiliations and fellow-travellers, who journeyed behind the Iron Curtain to see for themselves what life was like in the new people's democracy. The research focuses on Czechoslovakia as a tourist destination for a surprising number of anglophones in the early years of the Cold War. It argues that Soviet experience served as a best practices model for officialdom in Prague. This was modified where necessary to take into account the lessons learnt, national particulars, and the new geopolitical context. In both situations, foreigners were evaluated in terms of importance and potential as far as the communist cause was concerned. New Zealand as a destination of international tourism

The theme of this diploma thesis is the tourism of New Zealand and its impact on the economy of the state. The subject matter of the research is New Zealand as a destination of international tourism. The main aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze and evaluate position of destination New Zealand in the international tourism market. The partial aim is, for example, the description of New Zealand's economic situation and impact of tourism industry on the economy of the state, the characteristics of the New Zealand conditions of tourism development, the analysis of incoming tourism and the assessment of the competitiveness of destination New Zealand in international comparison. The findings are summarized in the SWOT analysis, which shows country's great potential for growth in the international tourism market. The end of the work is focused on the New Zealand tourism policy and on the forecasts of future developments in this area.
