The Role of Institutional Change in the Turkish Economic Growth Under AKP Governance
Gulaliyev, Algushad ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Benáček, Vladimír (referee)
This paper analyses how the institutional change in Turkey during AKP governance impacted the economic development of the country. It will first examine some of the main characteristics and positive impact of Turkey's institutional reforms toward democratization between 2002-2007. In the following section, the AKP's reversal from the implemented reforms and its authoritarian shift will be discussed to evaluate the deterioration of both political and economic institutions in the period between 2007-2017. Building on these discussions and through contrasting the institutional changes in these two periods, it will be examined whether the change in the institutions impacted the economic performance of Turkey between 2002-2017. To analyse the economic performance of Turkey and the quality of its economic growth in these years, the changes in Total Factor Productivity Growth, the export share of technologically advanced products, and FDI inflow to Turkey will be examined.

Říčka, Tomáš ; Pithart, Petr (advisor) ; Bažantová, Ilona (referee) ; Ježek, Tomáš (referee)
Tomas Ricka Stránka 1 Title: The influence of public policy on legal order of Czech Republic during transition Abstract: The thesis deals with public policy, its key components and influences on the institutional environment. The major aim of the thesis was to analyze, what was the influence of public (economic) policy in transition on the creation of rules in the Czech Republic. Who created the policy? How was the policy conducted? What was the role of the rules? What was the international context in that era? What was the influence of these external factors on the development in the Czech Republic. Other goals of the thesis dealt with the following: availability of suitable tools to analyze transition; key assumptions of public policy; rule making; the role of rule makers. The thesis does not attempt to describe all relevant approaches from modern economic theory that would be useful to analyze the transition processes. The thesis uses a selection of tools that can help to analyze institutions and rules in society from another view, than does standard legal theory or political science. Use of tools of economic analysis (especially from the area of microeconomics and new approaches of economics) can be characterized as complementary for institutional analysis. Transition and privatization of state property...

Diploma thesis "Formation of market institutions in Russia at the turn of 19th and 20th century" discusses the creation of a modern capitalist economy and the market institutions in Russia in the 19th century. The selected period undoubtedly changed not only the social and economic system, but the overall Russian history. Also, one of the parts of this thesis is the analysis of social, economic and community development, geographical particularities, international relations and the level of industrialization. The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the causes and results of the formation of market institutions in Russia, as the criteria for the transition from traditional to modern society. The thesis also compares the Russian experience with the experience of other European countries.

Ducháčková, Michaela ; Buben, Radek (advisor) ; Koubek, Jiří (referee)
The aim of this master thesis is to analyze political regime of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and to find out some possible effects, which could have had an influence on its stability and survival in the last 25 years. The Jordanian political regime had gone through several crises in the examined years. Not only did it survive all of them but also became stronger. Which factors caused the survival of the regime? In the first part of the thesis we typologize the regime from three possible perspectives (institutional, formalistic and legitimation). The second part deals with an analysis of factors, which enable the survival of Jordanian political regime. The emphasis is given on the role of institutions.
Contemporary Social Contract Theories
Froněk, Martin ; Wintr, Jan (advisor) ; Kysela, Jan (referee)
Contemporary Social Contract Theories The thesis is intended to be an introduction into contemporary social contract theories. John Rawls' book A Theory of Justice is a seminal work in this field. The thesis, however, does focus not only on the approach adopted by Rawls, but on the theories of other authors as well - that of J. Buchanan, D. Gauthier, T. Scanlon and R. Nozick. These remain quite unknown in the Czech context. The structure of the thesis should allow for a comparison between the respective theories as the author starts with the object of the social contract, proceeds to the parties of the contract and, finally, to its content. Special attention is devoted to the game theory which models some of the typical interpersonal interactions and, using its theoretical apparatus, can illustrate problems of social cooperation - the key theme of virtually all social contract theories. Eventually, the author tries to outline the way analytic philosophy views the social contract. In its eyes, the social contract is a necessary implication of the existence of language.
The state and non-state actors' approach to the UN Global Compact - the case of the Czech Republic
Krummerová, Ivona ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The thesis examines the approach of state and non-states actors to the UN Global Compact in the Czech Republic. The case of the Czech Republic has been chosen for the analysis since there has been much lower engagement level of companies in the UN Global Compact than in other European countries. The aim of the thesis is to discover how particular actors from the state and non-governmental sectors influence the engagement of companies in the UN Global Compact, and to find out the main causes of low engagement of companies in the initiative. The method of process tracing is used to explore causal relations between the variables. The qualitative data collected from the interviews with the representatives of governmental institutions, international non-governmental organisations, platforms of social responsibility, trade unions, and companies have been used as the main source. The main causes of the low engagement level of companies in the UN Global Compact have been identified as including: the passivity of the state and the absence of coherent national strategy for corporate social responsibility (CSR); the non-involvement of the non-governmental organisations in the promotion of UN Global Compact principles although their influence differs according to the character of the organisation; the lack of...
Determinants of FDI location across European Countries: role of economic and non-economic factors in decision-making by means of econometric analysis of panel data for 1995-2010
Brázdová, Martina ; Benáček, Vladimír (advisor) ; Bobková, Božena (referee)
This thesis provides an insight into factors that determine FDI inflows. Our focus is on FDI inflows directed to European countries and we study the FDI phenomena both from theoretical and practical view. We extend the literature that highlights the importance of FDI- institution link, and hypothesise that countries with better institutional quality should attract more foreign direct investments. This is in accord with expectation that good institutions create better investment environment in terms of lower costs of doing business and lower risk. The main purpose of this thesis is to complement previous studies that have covered this topic, but did not account for years of financial crisis. The key part analyses panel data for 33 European economies in the period from 1995 to 2010. A model of FDI determinants is constructed and estimated using panel data estimation techniques. The empirical part has revealed that even though some of the institutional variables are significant, they remain rather additional in explaining FDI flows; whereas the traditional economic variables are clearly significant. Our results are intuitively consistent with theoretical expectations and show that market growth, low trade restrictions, good infrastructure and low labour costs are key FDI drivers. Other important...
Language and Institiution
Kučerová, Barbora ; Pokorný, Martin (advisor) ; Švec, Ondřej (referee)
(in English): The aim of this thesis is to clarify the normative character of language, that is, how we are bound by a certain set of rules in every speech. We will look into this normative character of language by articulating two essential questions: in what is this normativity grounded and which aspects constitute language as an institution. In the first part of the paper we interpret the work of three authors, Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles S. Peirce and Pierre Bourdieu, in order to answer the question on what the normative character of language is founded. In this part we mainly look into the relationship between language and social consensus, habit/acting and institutions. In the second part of the paper we give a definition of language institution which is inspired by the work of Peirce and Bourdieu. Further on we clarify in systematic way those aspects of language which can be considered as normative. Firstly, we point out those which are clearly part of language, such as lexicon, pronunciation and intonation, official language and institution symbolized by language. The last aspects that we will analyse are speech genres, belief, habit/acting and power.
