Rural Basic Schools: Attendace and Absenteeism of Their Pupils
Bočková, Alena ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Laufková, Veronika (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the history and the presence of the schools in Dobronín, small village. The aim of the diploma thesis was to analyze the circumstances, the absence of the students, and the classes. It is a historical-comparative thesis. For all the needed information, I used the literature (both in electronic and book form), especially chronicles and school reports available at the school Dobronín and in District Archive in Jihlava. The diploma thesis focuses on the period 1882 - nowadays, and besides, contains the history of the time when just one small school with one class was allowed for the Czech children. Currently, there is an elementary school in Dobronín. Individual schooling in the focused burgher school is above expectations in comparison with other villages. Surprisingly, they have zero unexcused absence for the past few years. However, the historical resources shows that even though the students are present in the school, the teaching may be interrupted by both planned and unexpected events. Key words Czech school, German school, burgher school, country school, schooling, elementary school

The effect of lecture/seminar attendance on exam results
Plachá, Romana ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Želinský, Tomáš (referee)
The core of this thesis is to investigate how attendance at the lectures and seminars affects the exam results. Despite the fact that schools are the primary source of education, attendance at the universities is not usually compulsory. As a university student, I was interested if and how attendance influences academic performance at the university where I study. Thus I decided to conduct a survey and chose an undergraduate course Econometrics II at the Charles University in Prague. The sample is 42 students. Because of the problem of omitted variable bias, it was necessary to control for the unobservable factors such as ability, motivation, and effort. Therefore there are used two methods of estimation. Firstly, the method of ordinary least squares with proxy variables and secondly the method of two-stage least squares with an instrumental variable. The results indicate that in the studied sample there is a positive and sig- nificant effect of attendance at the lectures on the exam results, however, the effect of attendance at the seminars is not statistically different from zero. Keywords attendance, academic performance, ordinary least squares (OLS), two-stage least squares (2SLS), rational decision making Author's e-mail romanaplacha@gmail.com Supervisor's e-mail barbara.pertold-gebicka@fsv.cuni.cz

of English I chose the topic "Czech school in the Protectorate" for my Doctoral thesis. The history of the Second world war bellongs to my long interest. My goal was to create a popular - educational publication for student teachers. I never met with this part of history of our school in the Faculty of Education and in the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University. I hope it's very important to remind this part of history - dificult situation of teachers and students during the Nazi era to current students. This sadly topic could raise future teachers to love the profession and could raise the prestige of teachers in our country. My wish would be after reading this work to increase patriotism, love and respect fot the history of our school. I described individual school protectorate years with the introductional into the Protectorate Education. At the beginning of each school year I described the basic historical milestones. I wanted to capture the humiliation of our education system during the Protectorate compared to the high level of pre - war years, dishonor Czech teachers, pupils, students and progressive germanizacion. I took advantage memories of witnesses for readability and catchiness readers. I tried to create text with elements of experiential learning. I believe that experiential...
