Pavelková, Kateřina ; Řičicová, Hana (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
1 Abstract This bachelor's thesis explores the manifestations and the significance of camp in 1970's queer cinematography. The author examines the forms in which camp appears in the selected films with queer themes from the 1970s and what purposes it serves. The goal of this thesis is to determine the ways in which camp is significant to the selected films. The theoretical part presents a brief history of queer cinematography, the cultural context of the 1970s, and the definition of the camp phenomenon. In the analytical part, the author conducts a semiotic analysis of three selected films from the 1970s which in various ways feature the topic of queerness and which also contain the attributes of the camp aesthetic.
The representation of American serial killers of the 1970s in a film
Michal, Jan ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
This thesis primarily focuses on the analysis of film adaptations of selected serial killer cases which have taken place in the USA in the 1970s (The Zodiac Killer, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, David Berkowitz and Jeffrey Dahmer). Its main aim is to delineate the presentation of this pathological phenomenon, which especially came to prominence in the 1970s, through a classification built on the findings of narratology/literary theory. The presentation is then further realised through the comparison of the five sets of selected film adaptations with an emphasis on recording their differences and common features on the level of genre and themes, in the perspective of the narration (focalisation), in explicitness, in the capability of storytelling through images, and in the reconstruction of fictional worlds. A theoretical section, which defines basic terminology of the researched area and contains the case studies of the aforementioned five cases, also containing their realities, is an inherent component of the thesis. Through this method, it is possible to record movements of fictional worlds away from reality more effectively. With the use of the described analyses, a typology of film presentation of this phenomena was assembled, and the studies of relevant databases resulted in the description of...

An Outlaw Journalist's Journey through an Era Decadent and Depraved: Hunter S. Thompson in the context of America of the 1960s and early 1970s.
Stárek, Jiří ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee)
The thesis aims to explore the artistic personality of Hunter S. Thompson, one of the most distinctive cultural figures of post-war America, and his genesis as an author, journalist, and a counterculture idol of the 1960s. The era is now widely regarded as a turning point in contemporary American history as its deep-rooted values and norms were, over the course of a decade, gradually transformed by the young generation of social and political activists toward allegedly a more tolerant and liberal kind of community. Crucial in such an endeavor was the role of the countercultural movement that produced some of the most capable intellectual minds of the time, including Thompson. The paper thus analyzes the role and nature of the alternative culture in America as perceived by one of its most observant participants. Also, the thesis focuses on the author's role in establishing a new genre called New Journalism which can be linked with the era's countercultural efforts as well. In general, Thompson, in his texts, examines various phenomena surrounding the counterculture and provides us with a distinctive portrayal of the era's zeitgeist. However, unlike some of his contemporaries, he also remembers to examine numerous flaws and fallacies existing within contemporary American society, the American Dream...
"Better Red than Dead": American Indians' Struggle for Sovereignty Rights in the 1960s and 1970s
Staňková, Olga ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
In my thesis, I argue that the Native American activism of the 1960s and 1970s does not fall into the category of Civil Rights Movement because of its significantly different goals, and that the fundamentally different character of sovereignty rights also keeps the Indian struggle invisible in American understandings of U.S. political and social history. According to my analysis, the terms tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and treaty rights describe the ultimate goals of the Native American activists in the 1960s and 1970s the best. The decade between 1964 and 1974 witnessed the rise of radical Indian activism, which succeeded in reminding the general public and politicians that Indians are still present in the United States. Furthermore, it influenced a whole generation of Native Americans who found new pride in being Indian. However, this current of American activism is not known so well by the general U.S. public. This thesis will describe this state as "selective visibility" deriving from U.S. selective historical memory, only noticing and remembering those events and images concerning Native Americans that can be simply understood, somehow relate to the U.S. set of values, and fit in the national historical narrative.
Whose side are you on? Radical Left in postwar Finland - on the phenomenon of Marxism-Leninism outside the Eastern Bloc
Skálová, Barbora ; Švec, Luboš (advisor) ; Masař, Tomáš (referee) ; LARMOLA, Heikki Markku (referee)
Barbora Skálová Whose side are you on? Radical Left in postwar Finland - on the phenomenon of Marxism-Leninism outside the Eastern Bloc Abstract The dissertation aims to explore the phenomenon of a radical left movement - Taistoists - which at the turn of the 60s and 70s for a short period of time dominated the student and cultural circles in Finland. The dissertation strives to shed light on the reasons for the uprise of the - in European context unique - pro-Soviet, Marxist-Leninist and "anti-anti- establishment" youth movement, and on its influence on home and foreign policy of Finland in terms of so-called Finlandization. The work also puts the movement into the Czechoslovakian context, mainly in relation to the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion. The dissertation discusses the theoretical anticapitalistic background of the movement and compares it to the theoretical background and political practice of coeval New Left movements in Europe and the USA. The experience of the members of the movement has been elaborated in the oral history part based on personal interviews. The oral history chapter aims to offer an explanation and a broader perspective of the taistolaiset phenomenon presented by direct witnesses and participants of the movement.
