Runoff formation in polar areas and runoff analysis in two selected catchments in the James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula
Vacková, Kateřina ; Jeníček, Michal (advisor) ; Nedělčev, Ondřej (referee)
Runoff in polar areas is strongly influenced by rising air temperature because these regions experience the largest air temperature increases in the world. Rising air temperatures affect permafrost, snow cover and glaciers which are the main components of runoff in high latitude regions. Warming is also causing the shift in precipitation phase from solid (snow) to liquid (rain) as well as changes in annual precipitation its distribution. With reducing extent of the snow and ice cover, the energy balance of the Earth's surface is fundamentally affected as the albedo is reduced, which leads to further warming of the Earth's surface. Changes in snow and ice cover lead to significant positive feedback loops in the climate cycle. This study includes analyses of meteorological and hydrological data measured in James Ross Island during the 2018 austral summer. Meteorological data were measured at eight automatic weather stations, and hydrological data were measured in seven catchments. However, in this thesis the analyses are focused on two selected catchments: the partly glaciated Triangular and the glacier-free Bohemian catchments. The influence of different meteorological variables on the catchment runoff was analysed using correlation and regression analyses. The analyses showed the highest...

The bachelor thesis "Media (Re)Construction of Collective Memory: October and November as a Support for the Contemporary Czech National Identity" focuses on relation between mass media, collective memory and national identity. In accordance with social constructionism theory, the terms collective memory and national identity are understood as social constructs whereas mass media is considered to be one of the social construction agents. The aim of this work is to analyse a variety of media interpretations on significant Czech history events - October 28, 1918 and November 17, 1989. Analysed are newspaper commentaries published in order to commemorate these events during the eleven- year period from 1998 to 2009. As a resource for the analysis I have chosen three Czech daily newspapers - Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny and Mladá fronta DNES. The research method used is media qualitative content analysis. The work objective is to examine the typical media discourses based on national history which are constructed in a way to support contemporary Czech national identity. Why do states decide for or against the intervention in other states? Case Study: Libya and Syria
Vacková, Kateřina ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The master thesis on the topic Why do states decide for or against the intervention in other states? Case Study: Libya and Syria is focused on analysing the motives of states, which are crucial for deciding to intervene or not to intervene in the territory of a foreign state. The whole issue is assessed from the perspective of two major theories of international relations - liberalism and realism. As the first research case was chosen the international community's intervention in Libya in 2011. The case was analysed from the perspective of Sweden, which took part in the operation by the deployment of eight fighters Jas 39 Gripen. As the second case was chosen the civil war in Syria, which has been underway since 2011 and whose situation would have required similar interference by the international community. However, this has not happen until that time, although the states are militarily involved in Syria. This case was analysed from the view of Russia, which did not take part in operation in Libya, but since September 2015 has been involved in fighting on the ground in Syria. As a last case was chosen Great Britain, which has militarily participated in both conflicts. For the analysis itself was used Ortega's typology of interventions, which was adapted for the purpose of this work. The different...

This thesis deals with the qualitative text analysis of media discourses related to the 7th January 2015 terrorist attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's staff. In accordance with social constructionism theory, the term terrorism is here understood as a social construct and mass media is considered to be one of the social construction agents. The objects of analysis are journalistic texts published during the one-month period of 7th January - 7th February 2015. As a resource for the analysis I have chosen the daily newspaper Lidové noviny, the weekly magazine Týden, online newspaper IHNED.cz and TV programme Události, komentáře. The texts were analysed through the combination of grounded theory method and four steps of foucaultian discourses analysis described by Carla Willig. The aim of this paper is to discover and to interpret the most significant discursive constructions of Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack that appeared in the Czech media, to situate the same discursive object within wider or global discourses, to describe positions that discourses make available or attribute to the subjects and social actors, and to define the practices arising from these discourses. The media event of Charlie Hebdo attack has been closely related to the topics of freedom of speech, 9/11 terrorist...
