Queer journalists in the Czech media space
Jezberová, Gabriela ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Maňák, Vratislav (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the feelings of queer journalists in the Czech media space. The author interviewed 13 queer journalists from different types of media. The theoretical framework of this thesis is identity theory, feminism, liberalism, conservatism and queer theory. The research is designed to be qualitative, drawing on grounded theory practices to analyse how queer journalists' sexual orientation or gender identity affects their journalistic work through open, axial and selective coding. It answers how these journalists perceive the atmosphere in the newsroom, whether there are any barriers that make their work difficult, and what coping mechanisms they use to help them deal with stressful situations caused by their orientation or identity. The analysis also focuses on their perceptions of gender and sexual diversity in newsrooms, how their queer identity is reflected in the treatment of media topics, how they perceive the treatment of queer topics in the Czech Republic, or whether any obstacles arise in their fieldwork. In total, thanks to the three-level coding, it was possible to identify four categories that shield specific categories and encompass several problematic aspects. Thus, the basic themes are the field and newsroom environment, the impact of queer identity on media...
Size matters: a qualitative analysis of discussions under plus-size fashion articles in women's online magazines
Jonášová, Mirka ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Reifová, Irena (referee)
In the digital age, online platforms have become a critical space that facilitates the exchange of views on many topics. In addition to information, the internet is thus also a provider of space for the democratization of voice, toxicity and frequent discursive clashes. For example, the phenomenon of online deliberation around the display of body standards and the representation of plus-size individuals has come into focus in recent years. Indeed, plus-size fashion has become a significant part of the fashion industry in recent years, and with it, media discourse. Although it is increasingly appearing in mainstream media, its acceptance and representation is still met with some resistance and a phenomenon called fat shaming is emerging. Indeed, the medium of debate - online discussion - often amplifies incivility and lends itself to the phenomenon of online toxicity. The topic of plus-size representation of women is not just a debate about aesthetics or personal preferences; it intersects with larger social issues, including gender role settings, beauty standards, and the very nature of social acceptability. The premise for this research is that gender stereotypes regarding standards and body image are often influenced by patriarchal structures and that these standards are likely to be reflected in...

The aim of this diploma thesis was to find out, what role gender played in the media coverage of Danuše Nerudová's campaign for the presidential election in 2023. In the theoretical part, the concept of gender is explained as well as its connection to politics and how gendered language influences the political environment. Attention is paid to gender stereotypes, the historical development of women's representation in politics, and to specific obstacles that prevent women from being as active in public life as men. Specific impacts of stereotypes are shown through the examples of two well-known foreign female politicians, Hillary Clinton and Zuzana Čaputová. The context of the Czech presidential election in 2023, the campaign of Danuše Nerudová and the ways in which she herself has related to the issues of feminism and gender are then described. The methodological part presents the chosen research methods, qualitative and quantitative content analysis, and the media examined: Aktuálně, Deník Referendum, iDnes, iRozhlas, Echo24, Heroine, HN, Novinky, Reflex, and Seznam Zprávy. The qualitative research describes what the media most often focused on in relation to gender and the female candidate; the position of women in politics, criticism of Nerudová due to her lack of authenticity overconfidence,...

Grestyová, Natália Jane ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (referee)
The presented thesis, "The history and current state of advice columns and 'agony aunts' in both English and Czech and Slovak journalism with a focus on the question of gender" explores and analyzes advice columns as a journalistic genre, examining them from a feminist point of view and focusing on the question of the presented gender norms. The thesis begins with a brief historic overview of advice columns from its origins in the United Kingdom, the United States as well as Czech Republic and Slovakia. The methodological part of the study briefly outlines the theoretical background of the research, gender ideology, as well as previous studies in the field. Analytical part of the thesis looks into nine different advice columns; four British examples, two American ones and three from the Czech Republic, covering different types of media (daily newspapers, tabloids, women's magazines, radio). In selected examples from each of the columns, it strives to answer two key questions; how a given column portrays gender roles and what ideological inclinations can be found in the columns, particularly on the conservatism-liberalism and feminism-patriarchy axes. The thesis concludes with the results of the analysis, where it also highlights differences in these values between columns from British/American and...
Naked perspectives
Škodová, Radka ; Spáčilová Blažková, Kateřina (referee) ; Rathouský, Luděk (advisor)
Depiction of the female body, including physical and psychological aspects that penetrate the intimate sphere. The physical and psychological struggles associated with the everyday realities of women's lives. The depictions of women within this project highlight their strength, but also reflect a personal depth of expression, adding a new dimension to the theme of femininity in art. Although the figures are perceived as universal beings, they gradually take on the form of the female students themselves as a result of the transmission of their own thought patterns. In the contrast between the personal and the universal, they create works that reveal a new perspective on the female nude, moving away from the historical narrative created by the male gaze. A theoretical treatment of the vast subject of the female nude in art from multiple perspectives and an attempt to link theoretical knowledge with practical representation in painting.
