The analysis "Framing of immigration in Czech daily newspapers" reveals how Czech daily newspapers framed so called migration crisis in Europe in 2015 when the immi- gration issue belonged to the most important issues in both Czech and foreign news media. This thesis draws from theoretical and analytical concept of media framing and concept of Agenda setting which deal with aspects used by media in describing reality, and their media effects on public opinion. Quantitative content analysis of five national daily newspapers revealed that immi- gration issue was represented mainly as international political problem, followed by security threat as the second most frequent topic of news on immigration. In almost all news articles the immigration issue was framed as problem, whereas cause frame and solution frame were present in approximately a quarter of news on immigration. Czech and foreign politicians and government sources were the most cited or para- phrased actors in Czech daily newspapers. On the other hand, refugees, immigrants and ci- tizens were less frequent speakers, and experts rarely commented on the issue of immigration in Czech daily newspapers. Further results of this analysis revealed that thematic framing rather than episodic was prevalent in immigration news, and human interest...

This diploma thesis focus on a media representation of a mass death which is caused by terrorist attacks. Due to terrorist attacks around the whole world many innocent people die and media write about these affairs in many ways depending on different factors. By combining quantitative and qualitative analysis of six cases of terrorist attacks which took place in different world locations, thus thesis shows how are these events represented in daily newspaper Mladá Fronta DNES. On the one hand, the number of victims appear to be less significatnt factor, on the other hand, the geographic proximity and possible connection to the Czech Republic plays bigger role. Thus, more space is devoted to these attacks. Each event also appear to be framed differently according to the time when they took place. Either, they were framed as attacks against humanity with focus on heroism of the victims, or they were framed as geopolitical conflicts with attention to the consequences and political responses. It is also possible to find narratives which repeat in the articles about terrorist attacks. These narratives use archetypal stories which can be found in acient myths. Charvátová, Anna ; Hájek, Roman (advisor) ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (referee)
Framing is one of the important concepts of media studies. That is because the journalists use framing as they create news. Framing makes it easier for their audiences to perceive the news and to understand it better. In media production framing occurs mostly because of the fact that journalists are affected by their opinions or by the organizations that they work for. Even the recipients doesn't have to perceive the news same way as the author - they are also affected by their opinions and his environments. The goal of this thesis was to find out how three Czech journals - Respekt, Reflex and Týden - framed European Union during the European Parliament elections 2014. In that period media informs about EU more than usual. Another goal was to find out how journalist constructed these frames. Qualitative analysis revealed six frames, which I named: Uncertain future of the EU, Lack of interest of Czechs for the EU, Absurd regulations of the EU, Necessary bureaucracy of the EU, Relevancy of the European parliament and European MPs and Inefficiency of European MPs. In analyzed journals prevailed negative frames over positive ones. As tools of framing authors used mostly headlines and captions. Selection of sources wasn't as important as choice of vocabulary and repetition of words in texts.
