Between Global Ambitions and Economic Pragmatism: Czechoslovak Experts in Angola and Mozambique in the Cold War

In the mid-1970s, the Soviet Union and its allies, strengthened by the Helsinki Conference's success and the United States' international weakening after the defeat in Vietnam, launched a new global offensive. One of their priorities became cooperation with the newly established states in Sub- Saharan Africa - Angola and Mozambique. In addition to continued military support, the Eastern Bloc states invested in their industrialization, agriculture, and key infrastructure, which were supposed to contribute to the development of both states. In the case of Czechoslovakia, like other European socialist countries, sending experts to Angolan and Mozambican factories and other institutions became part of its foreign policy. By the end of the Cold War, several hundred Czechoslovak citizens had gained work experience in Angola and, later, Mozambique. The aim of the dissertation dealing with this key Czechoslovak foreign policy strategy in the broader Cold War context is to contribute to the current academic discussion on the forms of socialist globalization and the approach of the East to the Global South in the late Cold War. Cartoon humor in Dikobraz magazine from Velvet revolution to the Czechoslovakia dissolution

The purpose of the work is to analyze cartoon humor on the pages of the humorous and satirical magazine Dikobraz between November 1989 and December 1992. This period was a significant change in the political system for Czechoslovakia. The communist totalitarian regime was replaced by a democratic establishment. At the end of this period, there was a division into independent Czech and Slovak republics. For the purposes of the work, the professional literature devoted to the observed period, especially in the political sphere, was studied. Furthermore, 162 issues of the magazine Dikobraz were studied, or Nový Dikobraz. In the practical part, selected political and social events and their depiction with the help of cartoon humor are presented.

Czechoslovak newsreels from the perspective of social transformation (1989-1990)

This thesis deals with the end of film news in Czechoslovakia, which was realized in the form of film weekly newsreels until 1990. In the first part I define film news from the theoretical and terminological point of view and try to describe its specifics. I then explain its birth and the production of newsreel films on our country's territory, from its beginnings before the First World War until the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia and the establishment of democracy, which ended the continuous, state- subsidized and controlled production of regularly published weeklies. In the second, practical part, I use the method of qualitative content analysis to examine the form and thematic framework of the weekly newsreels produced in 1989, when a new concept of film reporting focused on the so-called magazines began to take effect, and in 1990, the year Czechoslovakia entered the democratic process. My aim is to find out what was the role of weekly newsreels as a means of socialist propaganda and a channel of social criticism in the first, revolutionary year and how they changed in the second, democratic year. Recipes in the Květy Magazine and Their Transformations in the Era of Socialism

This thesis uses analytical tools of a qualitative nature, namely historical, content and linguistic analysis, to observe the elements, examples and manner of propaganda and its projection into culinary recipes in the Květy magazine between 1951 and 1989. It describes not only the transformation of the magazine's content and the related increase in the proportion of media content devoted to culinary recipes and related topics, but also the development of the recipes themselves, taking into account the use of ingredients. The thesis further treats findings such as the increasing share of carnivore recipes and places them in the economic and political context. It also focuses on the ways of regime propaganda projection into media content, which was manifested, for example, in recipes devoted to the cuisines of so-called "friendly" countries. Further, it focuses on the methods of how certain foods were promoted in the analysed period. It explains why such content disappears in times of prosperity and reappears in times of scarcity. It also explores why certain food can be encountered in particular segments of the studied period. How Does Generation Z Perceive the Communist Regime in Czechoslovakia?

This bachelor's thesis examines the attitude of Generation Z towards the former communist regime. In the first section, it introduces the reader to the communist history of Czechoslovakia, followed by an overview of communism as an ideology, and also revisionism. The next section describes the methods used to collect data. Those data are then used in the third section to verify the truthfulness of the established hypotheses. These hypotheses aim to find out the attitude of Generation Z towards communism and whether the field of study at the individual's university also plays a role in their perception.

The Role of Women in the Velvet Revolution

The Role of Women in Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution Abstract This thesis investigates the role played by women in Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution of 1989. Overall, it finds that despite the marginal role attributed to women in the dominant narrative of the event, women in fact played a key role in every activity of the Velvet Revolution and therefore were a key factor in its success. Drawing on case studies from elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe, it hypothesises about the sources of women's erasure from the historical record and subsequent national memory, arguing that the conservative gender order influenced the type of revolutionary work women did, the lack of visibility they were afforded, as well as their own devaluation of their contributions. Given the similarity in findings, it advocates for the development of an analytical concept to theorise the function of gender in social movements and their subsequent memorialisation. Finally, by documenting the activities done by women, it aims to reorient women as historical and political subjects in the Velvet Revolution, worthy of further historical inquiry. The origin and development of the magazine Gól between 1968-1989

This bachelor thesis explores the origin and development of the sports magazine Gól, which centers in on the two most popular sports - football and ice hockey. The aim of the thesis is to present the origin of Gól in 1968 and to map its subsequent development until 1989. It also examines the environment of Czech sports journalism in the second half of the 1960s and the Olympia publishing house, which published Gól throughout the period of normalization. I examined 22 issues of the magazine, analyzed its structure and focused on its content agenda and graphic design. The thesis describes the main sections of Gól and also examines the influence of the communist regime on the magazine's content. It also focuses on the editorial personalities who shaped the form of the magazine. I conducted semi-structured interviews with former editors Jaroslav Kolář, Pavel Bárta, Stanislav Hrabě, Přemysl Hrubý and Jiří Macků, whose utterances helped me gather valuable information about the development of the traditional magazine.

This diploma thesis, which is called Aristocracy in diplomatic services demonstrated by the example of František Schwarzenberg and Jindřich Kolowrat-Krakowský, sets as its goal to describe the position of the nobility in Czechoslovak society after the establishment of the republic and clarify involvement of Czech nobles in diplomatic services. Specifically, the work will be devoted to František Schwarzenberg and Jindřich Kolowrat-Krakowský, who both served as the Czechoslovak ambassador. Then I I will also focus on the history of the families from which the men were descended, as well as their lives outside of diplomacy.
