The Ukrainian crisis in the news coverage made by ČTK and its comparison with ČT news with focus on crucial events within the conglict

This diploma thesis points out differences in the reporting methods of CTK and CT, the two public service's media, regarding the Ukrainian crisis. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on both of these media's properties with emphasis on their foreign coverageas well as related medial terms' definitions. One chapter is reserved to cover Ukraine as a state and its political history since the SovietUnion's disintegration through to 2014 and the Ukrainian crisis development; further studying the relationship between Ukraine and the Russian Federation resulting in the crisis in 2013. In the practical part of the thesis quantitative and qualitative methods are used to determine how much attention and screen-time both media dedicated to the crisis, which parties were given opportunities to comment and identify other sources of information. Keeping in mind the fact that CT had four reporters on site at it's disposal, the thesis tries to find out how big of an influence that had on the overall production, processing and tone of the television news and to what degree the production of both media agreed or diverged.

The main topic of the thesis is the city of Cherson, which has been under excavation mainly by Russian or Ukrainian researchers for more than 180 years. Due to a difficult political situation, the area was not accessible to other scholars till 1993. Therefore, most of the books or articles were published in Russian and have not been widely spread among western researchers. The first two chapters of the dissertation deal with the sources and the history of research. The main body of the dissertation is divided into three parts: (chapter 3) From the end of the Roman times till the early Middle Ages (5th - mid-7th centuries), (chapter 4) The Dark Ages (mid-7th - mid-9th centuries), (chapter 5) The new era of prosperity (mid-9th - end of the 10th century). The third chapter is devoted to the time when the era of Antiquity was slowly coming to its end and the development proceeded to the Middle Ages, in this case to the early Byzantine period. The fish industry and fish processing will be discussed because these activities which had begun here in the Roman times continued in the Byzantine period, too. Afterwards, the beginnings and spread of Christianity are debated. The Language Situation in the Originally Czech Communities in South Ukraine (esp. In Crimea and in Novgorodkovka)

Abstract. The work is analysing the language situation in Czech communities in Crimea and Novgorodovka village. Fieldwork data from those communities and archive material studies present main reasons of migration from Czech lands to imperial Russia and development of Czech settlements in southern Russian regions. The description of Russian and Ukrainian influence on Czech language phenomena and transformations on all language levels is given, as well as some features of Northeast Bohemian preserved in spoken Czech of Crimean settlers. From peace to Crimea: Russia's media image in Czech commentary in years 2013-2014

Bachelor's thesis titled From peace to Crimea: Russia's media image in Czech commentary in years 2013-2014 analyzes the form of commentaries related to Russian federation and endeavors to capture a transformation of medial view on the country in the context of Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, conflict in Ukraine and all previous events. The theoretical background of the whole thesis is based on the theories of social and medial construction of reality such as agenda setting, framing and gate-keeping and deals with stereotyping as well. An extensive chapter is devoted to Czech-Russian relations in a time span longer than a century, presents important points in shared history and mentions events which radically influenced international history in the past. The analytic part applies the method of quantitative content analysis and utilizes elements of qualitative content analysis. The presented media image of Russia is based on examination of eight variables (frequency, media, extent, author, event, topic, evaluation of Russia's role and stereotypes).

This thesis analyses how three television stations - Czech ČT24, Russian RT and American CNN - informed about the Crimean crisis which took place in Ukraine in 2014. The first part of the thesis presents theoretical approach and mentions previous similar studies, which focused on examining of medial coverage and framing of war conflicts. Next chapter describes the history of Ukraine briefly and underlines events which could have caused the Crimean crisis. Thereafter the thesis introduces the timeline of the Crimean crisis. In the next part the thesis analyses sources, topics and keywords which appeared in the news of ČT24, RT and CNN. It also describes how particular people and events were visually covered. In the final chapter the approach of the three examined television channels is compared.
Czech Language in the Crimea

The text deals with the current state of the language of the Czech minority in Crimea. Based on field research, it describes phenomena and changes that occurred in the language of Crimean Czechs that were caused by the influences of the foreign language and culture environment. Main focus of the text is phonetics, i.e. the way how speakers are affected by the Russian pronunciation standards. The text contains historical and cultural context relevant to the departure of Czechs to Crimea and the shape of the Czech minority nowadays. Individual chapters are dedicated to specific phenomena: deviations in the pronunciation of vocals in first syllables of words, changes in the pronunciation of the consonant [j], labialization in pronunciation of consonant [v], changes in the pronunciation of loanwords, pronunciation of consonants [ ] and [ ] in Czech words, pronunciation of toponyms, prosthesis and elimination of speech sounds from the beginning of words, deviations in the pronunciation of speech sounds from the middle of words, vocalization of prepositions and influences of Russian language standards on the use of their vocalized form.
Role of islam in society of repatriated Crimean Tatars

Bachelor thesis deals with problems connected to religiosity of contemporary Crimean Tatars after their repatriation from exile where they stayed after the mass deportation in 1944 and with process of fast and strong re-Islamization of the Crimean Peninsula since the end of 1980s. Influence of this process on local relations and role of Crimean Tatars in conflict between Ukrainians and Russians around Crimea. Thesis is interdisciplinary work with elements of sociology, religious studies, history, political science and international relations. Work is divided into three chapters First covers brief summary of history of Crimean Tatars second Crimean political organizations and their positions towards Islam and third physical indicators of rebirth of Islam in Crimea role of Islam in everyday life of Crimean Tatars and eventual sectarian conflicts in Crimea. Results of cited sociological surveys imply strong secular character of Crimean Tatars that consist of not obeying religious rules and rituals and widespread self-identification with Islam as historical-cultural tradition of their nation. THE AIM OF THIS DOCUMENT In connection with the domestic Ukrainian crisis and the external Russian aggression towards the country, we are witnessing a surge of disinformation, falsehoods and facts taken out of context which are to conceal or bias the image of reality. The disinformation thwarts a serious debate on the issues which are crucial for the Ukrainian context and which the Czech public needs to know about. This is why the European Values Think-Tank addressed the prominent Czech and Slovak experts to create this document. Its main goal is to refute the most frequent myths and falsehoods about Ukraine and focus the Czech debate on the real state of affairs. We strongly believe that this document will help various persons (journalists, commentators, editors, analytics, politicians etc.) to understand and shed light on the events in Ukraine. The text was written by a group of experts who have been interested in Ukraine for a long time and are really in touch with the country. The document does not speak in favour of any institution which the authors work for. The European Values Think-Tank is responsible for the content.
