Ideology, censorship, indirect translations and non-translation: Czech literature in 20th -century Portugal

The present doctoral thesis investigates book translations of Czech and Slovak literature into European Portuguese in 20th -century Portugal. The Introduction gives reasons for choosing the topic, argues for its relevance and outlines the structure of the thesis. It defines the main research question, 'What was the presence of Czech literature translated into European Portuguese in 20th -century Portugal?', and formulates the hypothesis to be tested: 'The translations of Czech literature in 20th century Portugal exhibited a tendency, a pattern.' Chapter 1 attempts to operationalise seven theoretical issues pertinent to Translation Studies in general: (1) ideology, (2) censorship, (3) indirect translations, (4) non- translation, (5) canon and world literature, (6) paratexts, and (7) medium-sized lingua- & socio-cultures. Chapter 2 delineates the research subject, discusses the most important types of sources and materials used and presents the methodology. The principal research subject is defined as translations of Czech fiction into European Portuguese published in book form in Portugal in the 20th century. Seminal works by J. Levý and A. Propaganda in the Czechoslovakia in 1950s

The thesis deals with the communist propaganda in Czechoslovakia during the early fifties. The opening part describes the historical context, media system, and establishing of regime's censorship and information monopoly. In the interpretative part, the thesis analyses the ideological stereotypes and mainsprings of propaganda. The thesis applies the method of qualitative media content analysis of daily press and other media types. The communistic ideology is viewed as a systematic and comprehensive "gesamtkunstwerk" influencing the society. The conclusion of the thesis is the interpretation of the ideological mainsprings and theircontext. The thesis shows parallels between principles of construction of the ideological text and mythical stories.

Spartakiad as a secular ritual

Spartakiads were mass synchronised gymnastic displays and had hundreds of thousands participants. In communist Czechoslovakia they took place every five years. In this paper I explore how they differ from and resemble to religious rituals. I based this study mainly on theories of British social anthropologists Edmund Leach and Victor Turner. The gymnasts exercising on the stadium were supposed to represent a united people and to articulate basic ideological values, most importantly joyful work and preparedness to fight for peace. The order was thus reminded to the participants of the ritual and according to this order the society was formed. Because the symbolism of the spartakiad was very general and ambiguous, it was able to unite social groups between which there was tension in everyday life. Thus it created the illusion that the society is unanimous. These characteristics allow the spartakiads to resemble religious rituals. At the same time they differ from them in an important trait. Except from expressing cultural values, religious rituals enable their questioning in a clearly defined situational context. Hence they can help the evolution of social structures. Western Music in the Post-1968 Czechoslovakia

This paper addresses the peculiar topic of western music in post 1968 Czechoslovakia with emphasis on the official music scene. It shows how western music was actually treated in Czechoslovakian society and how the image of western music was shaped within the public discourse , including many significant ambiguities. It also follows various ways (legal and also illegal) in which ordinary people used to obtain foreign music records in the era of late socialism. An analysis of actual impact of western music on Czechoslovak popular music and the role of institutions within that is also present. This paper could thus be considered as a modest contribution to the social and cultural history of socialist dictatorships.

The Landscape of Memory of Duchcov-Bridge. The socialist Ideology in microhistorical perspective.

The main point of this work are the forms of remembering collision between striking workers and the cordon of gendarme, which took place in Duchcov (North Bohemia) on 4.2.1931 and where four workes were killed. In the time of socialism in Czechoslovakia was created a complex collection of these by the state supported forms of rememembering, which we have called The landscape of memory of the Dux bridge on the ground of works of Pierra Nora and Jan Assmann. The Ananlysis of this landscape of memory is the main object of the first part of this work. The second part is focused on the involved persons, who took part on the construction of the landscape of memory and who articulated in negotiation their own individual intentions. Lilliputians.Representations of the bodily "difference" in the Prague's freakshow culture 1820-1940

In the following essay, I focus on the representations of bodily "difference" in the Prague's freakshow culture, particulary on the displays of the so called "Lilliputians", which were popular among the public from the beginning of the 19th Century to the 40's of the 20th Century. Firstly, I introduce the Prague's curiosity exhibitions as a specific social praxis and I compare them with similar displays in Europe and the United States. In the second part of this essay, I try to analyse those exhibitions critically, using the concepts from the present disability studies discourse. I deal with the bodily "otherness" as a category of difference, which arises from the intersection of different ideologies. According to the point of view, this category shaped the individual and collective identities and fostered the social hierarchies of the time. Throughout the essay, I focus on the dis/continuities in the imagination of bodily "difference" and I try to describe the specificity of the Czech freakshow tradition. The impact of the United States of America in Nicaragua in 80's of the 20th century

The Bachelor thesis "The impact of the United States of America in Nicaragua in 80's of the 20th century"deals with actions of the Reagan's administration in this state of the Central America in the years 1981 - 1988 during his presidential mandate. The bachelor thesis is supposed to be the case study of the changing understanding of the concept of non-intervention in time. It is not only the description of events, but also the evaluation from the point of view of the international law and the research of the dierences in opinions of the authors as of the scientic literature, so of the press. This is followed by theanalysis of the arguments of supporters and critics of the Reagan's policy. The thesis is basicly divided into four parts. The rst one is about the terms, which are related to the topics of the thesis and are stipulated in the international law. The following chapter provides a basic overview of events in Nicaragua in the 80's of the past century. The third part examines various arguments considered by authors as consider important, with regard to the turning point - the end of the Cold War. The nal chapter analyses the reasons of the authors of the third chapter in relation to the timeline, but also to the legal documents from the rst part.

The Reprezentation of Selected Socialist and Communist Countries in the Czech Press in 2010

Theme of this diploma work are news related to selected socialist and communist countries in the Czech press. Characteristic works are the specifics of media countries with the socialist (or communist) government in the Czech press. Theoretical work is beyond theory Frankfurt and Birmingham schools. The basis of the analysis work will stereotypes concerning the socialist and communist countries, the Czech news media contents. The findings will then be the basis for in-depth interviews with the news media workers and the staff representative bodies of the countries. The goal is to reveal the motives and the construction of stereotypes at the production of media content.
