Zasadil, Jan ; Procházka, Martin (advisor) ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee)
This thesis is a contrastive study of E.A. Poe's and E.T.A. Hoffmann's ways of achieving uncanny and grotesque effects in their short stories through modeling the perception of fictional world by narrators and characters as well as through the use of uncanny- and grotesque-specific figures and concepts and the play with reader. It is divided into two parts; the first core part studies uncanny and grotesque concepts in groups of selected short stories, the second part then provides theoretical reflection of the findings.
A critical rewiew of psychoanalytic approaches to Greek religion
Maľová, Anna ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Halík, Tomáš (referee)
Two psychoanalytic interpretations are subjected to scrutiny in this thesis. Richard Caldwell, the author of the first interpretation, presents psychoanalytic interpretation of Greek theogonic myths in his book The Origin of the Gods. The Greek family and its influence on Greek myths is subject of the second interpretation presented in the work The Glory of Hera by Philip E. Slater. While Caldwell prefers classical psychoana- lysis Slater is interested in specific schema of the Greek family which he of course in- terprets psychoanalytically. Key words: psychoanalysis, Greek mythology, Greek gods, Greek religion, psy- choanalytic interpretations.
Gender relationships in a novel Life is elsewhere by Milan Kundera
Horčičková, Aneta ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Kalnická, Zdeňka (referee)
This thesis discusses gender relationships in the novel Life is elsewhere by Milan Kundera. The first part of the analysis focuses on construction of motherhood and fatherhood, from which eventually results the positive/negative relationships of the child to the parents and on which we can also see the organization of the parenting practice itself. The second part is devoted to the key issue of the mother - son interactions, and therefore it analyzes the psychoanalytic concept of the Oedipal complex and difficulties associated with it, such as the son's dependence on the dominant mother who in addition fully replaces the absent father. I especially concentrate on the effort of the son to free himself from this dependence and on his consequent search for male identity. Methodologically, my text is designed as a combination of archetypal analysis with an interpretative or conceptual analysis, stemming from the approach of the so called resisting reading. This thesis compares traditional concepts with the feminist ones and applies them on the characters of Kundera's novel. Key words: gender relationships, psychoanalysis, archetypes, dominant mother, male identity.
André Breton and psychoanalysis
Paulů, Aneta ; Jamek, Václav (advisor) ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the connection between psychoanalysis and surrealism, an important avant-garde group. The thesis focuses on selected theoretical writings of A. Breton, leader of the surrealist movement. Influence of psychic automatism on his work is being examined along the processes revealing unconsciousness in comparison with S. Freud's fundamental works. The thesis further defines how the Freudian psychoanalysis was processed in Breton's concept of surrealism and how it influenced surrealist conceptions and procedures, provided that the basic elements of inspiration are taken right from psychoanalysis. The ultimate goal of the thesis is to determine to what extent is the influence of psychoanalysis apparent in Breton's work, and where the surrealism goes beyond psychoanalysis itself.
Representations of the Female Voice in US Prose Fiction
Landerová, Petra ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
The present MA thesis explores the concept of a female body and voice and their transformations as presented by various American writers. The chosen male authored works include Washington Square by Henry James, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, and The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon, for these writers delineate their heroines Catherine Sloper, Lady Brett Ashley, and Oedipa Maas in a turbulent period of their lives when they attempt to break with the obsolescent roles of passive and obedient daughters, partners, and wives. These fictional agents use different kinds of resistance, but as women, they are, nevertheless, mediated through the dominant male and masculine discourse that pervades the fictionalized societies in which these female agents appear. As for fictional work by female writers, without the assumption that the gender of the writer makes any literary work more or less "feminine", I have chosen The Awakening by Kate Chopin, The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, a short-story "Good Country People" by Flannery O'Connor, and Blood and Guts in High School by Kathy Acker. The female heroines of the selected literary works bear a number of traumas women have had to endure under the patriarchal order and this thesis will address those traumas, their manifestation in the female psyche, and how...

Opinions of literary scientists and others experts and also thorough analysis of "Brothers Karamazov" are added to the interpretation of Freud's essay.
Use of Symbolism in Selected Works of William Golding
Kopečná, Kateřina ; Chalupský, Petr (advisor) ; Topolovská, Tereza (referee)
This diploma thesis is concerned with the use of symbolism in three selected novels by William Golding, Pincher Martin, The Spire and The Double Tongue. The theoretical part presents a brief biography of the writer and outlines theoretical background of literary symbolism, focusing especially on Northrop Frye's Theory of Symbols and the psychoanalytic perspective. It is concluded by listing sources of inspiration behind the selected Golding's works, taking his own experiences as well as literary influences into account. The practical part begins with characterization of Golding's use of symbols in general, including his methods, recurring topics and symbolic patterns. Its main part focuses individually on the three chosen books, in the order of their publication. Each section analyses symbolism of setting of the story and the protagonists' names, symbolic imagery, and it seeks for Christian and psychoanalytic symbols. In addition, it presents possible interpretations of other significant symbols occurring in the particular novel. The use of symbolism is put in context with outer influences to show the variety of topics and specificity of the author's style.
Situation of the Surrealist Subject
Svěrák, Šimon ; Zuska, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Dadejík, Ondřej (referee)
Univerzita Karlova v Praze Filosofická fakulta katedra estetiky Diploma thesis Šimon Svěrák Situation of the Surrealist Subject (abstract) 2012 thesis supervisor: prof. PhDr. Vlastimil Zuska, CSc. Abstract This thesis focuses on the situation of a substantial subject in the historical development of the surrealist experience and confronts it with our original postmodern interpretation of thoughts of early Marx. The surrealist consciousness is based on a dialectical opposition between rational and irrational elements of cognitive processes. André Breton apprehends this dialectics under the perspective of love life and relates it to values of love, freedom and poetry. Nevertheless, this conception changes in the immanent development of the surrealist consciousness from Breton over the work and thoughts Salvador Dalí and Mikuláš Medek to Vratislav Effenberger. Effenberger removes positive values from surrealism and puts emphasis on the critical functions of the irrational. On the psychological field, all these ideas are based on the conception of the unconscious which means there is the substantial approach in them. Our critical interpretation of Marx shows, that the surrealist concept of subject is in the contradiction with its substantial determination. The subject has to be perceived as the essential...
Daseinsanalysis and the philosophy of Martin Heidegger
Mašková, Monika ; Zicha, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Hogenová, Anna (referee)
The thesis deals with daseinsanalysis as a psychotherapeutic direction, which is based (among other things) on philosophy. The topic is approached in the sense of caring of the soul, which has appeared in the European tradition since Plato, and it was the overlap of philosophy into psychology, that gave rise to daseinsanalysis. This thesis focuses on the interconnection of psychology and philosophy. Based on the studied literature, the work contains the basis of daseisnanalysis from phenomenology, philosophy of Martin Heidegger and psychoanalysis. The thesis deals with the reflection of the origin of daseinsanalysis in work od Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss, the founders of daseinsanalysis. The work of Ludwig Bisnwanger discusses the concept of freedom, love and other topics that have been taken over and persisted in daseinsanalysis. This thesis is also about Medard Boss's relationship with Martin Heidegger and his interpretation of dreams, which he focused on. Furthermore, the thesis sets out the main principles of daseinsanalysis, which have developed over the years and link them to their foundations. The main principles include being able to work with existentials, work with freedom and respect for listening and receiving. All these form a mutual relationship between the patient and the...
