Analysis of the structure and formal means of the Yakut epic olonkho, on the example of the oloncho "Er soghotox"

The topic of the thesis is interpretation of a yakutian epic (olonkho) Modun Er Soghotox through the concept of J. Lotman's classifying boundaries. In the begining, the thesis is trying to put the olonkho into broader genre context of yakutian folklore. Formal aspect of the text is important for the definition of the genre, therefore the work attempts to describe some of the most common distinctive features, especially alliteration and paralelism. The second part tries to analyze the worlds of olonkho as the Lotman's semantic spaces. Each world keeps significantly different semantic environment. Crossing the boundaries between these spaces initiates the plot of olonkho. The last part is trying to understand the role of the hero in olonkho, mainly as the mediator between the semantic spaces.
Sport in Film as a Cultural Phenomenon

Sport in Film as a Cultural Phenomenon Abstract: The relationship between sport and the media has undergone rapid development in recent decades. The combination of television and top sport has created a specific and very influential genre of popular culture. Creating sporting stories, which is typical of the current media, is also an attempt to impress these stories in a more permanent and cohesive form. Sport therefore also features in the most varied of forms in the film media. This work presents a culturological, thus holistically and interdisciplinary-oriented, view of the phenomenon of sport in film. Firstly, sport as a part of popular culture is investigated. This includes the philosophical concept of the cultural phenomenon of games. The question is considered of the universal themes which typify the sport film genre. In order to explain the continuing popularity of sport film, a study of film is then undertaken with regard to the cultural dynamics to which research in the field of film genres also belongs. Thereafter, sport film is examined in terms of the cultural-anthropological categories of myth and ritual. Magdalena Kučerová Dissertation work: Myth of Narcissus in French literature at the turn of the 20th century ABSTRACT: This dissertation thesis based on knowledge of French myth criticism deals with the issue of myths in literature, which is a specific manifestation of human symbolic imagination. In its most general level the work studies the definition of a myth and its social function as well as the matter of opposite notions regarding to the mythos and logos, which have gradually more and more differentiated along with the development of European thinking. The myth of Narcissus has probably been one of the oldest myths in European culture. In its most renowned and most comprehensive form, the myth first appeared in the third book of Metamorphoses by Ovid, which has served as an inspiration for remakes by many later authors. The story of a young man who fell in love with his own reflection on the surface of the water contains a great variety of semantically strong structures (mainly the motifs of a mirror, narcissistic love, passively superior character of a hero, or the final metamorphoses into a flower), which are analysed in this study. Meanings of Myth. Themes of classical mythology in Czech fine arts of the 1930s

Classical mythology has been one of the main sources of inspiration for European artists for centuries. It also remained current during the 20th century. From the 1920s, one can see increasing interest in classical myths; it becomes a source of inspiration even for artists of avant-garde art movements. The 20th century artist approach themes from classical mythology from a position of newly acquired artistic freedom. Release of iconographic conventions and academic rules, emphasis on psychology and individuality of a modern man brings specific forms of reception and reinterpretation of classical myths. In many cases, classical mythology carries allegorical meanings in a relation to contemporary political and social events, often in a very critical tone. But it also represents a tool for one's personal coping with reality. The thirties and early forties of the 20th century with dark atmosphere affected by war conflicts represent the culmination period of classical myths in visual arts. The tendency can be observed both in the art of European and Czech origin. James Bond - the secretagent of propaganda

This Master's thesis focuses on elements and manifestations of propaganda in selected films from the James Bond film series. The first part defines the scope of term "propaganda" from the point of view of communication and media studies. It also describes various authors' perspectives on different types and ways of propagandist persuasive message spread and how it can be revealed using discourse analysis. The thesis reflects especially the pragmatic approach of authors Jowett and O'Donnell and is compared to other cardinal approaches. The theoretical part also puts propaganda into context of time, i. e. the Cold War, and it mentions specific cases of its impact. The thesis deals with James Bond films as such, in particular with their narrative and its mythological and stereotypization constituent. James Bond films are examined, in the practical part, using content analysis. The aim is to detect described pro-eastern propaganda elements, analyse their manifestation and answer the research questions.
Mythology of dr. Who television series

Main focus of my Master's Thesis is to conduct a research of mythological elements and themes that appear within the narrative structure of selected episodes of BBC television series Doctor Who, deriving from the initial hypothesis that such mythological patterns are still recurring and repeating even in the structure of stories produced by modern show-business industries, which renders their content intrinsically more attractive for any audience. We analyse selected episodes from both arks of the Doctor Who's story individually - the old one, which began in the sixties, and the new one, which is considered to be a reboot of the original series and aired in 2005. The originally intended educative element of the series and its sudden disappearance is also a part of our research. Main analysis of our paper consists of a semiotic analysis of the text of the television series utilizing the point of view of the critical reader that was introduced by Umberto Eco, and deriving from the definition of modern myth that appears in works of Roland Barthes, archaic myth, studied for example by Carl Lévi- Strauss, and Jungian archetypes.
Mythologies in Samsung galaxy note advertising campaogn

This diploma thesis discusses modern myths that appear in the selected audiovisual commercials. The commercials are part of the advertising campaign for a Galaxy Note 3 device produced by Samsung Company. The campaign was launched in the fall of 2013 and continued through the spring 2014. As Samsung is also one of the official partners of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, some of the analyzed content is dedicated to the relationship between the two. Semiotics and marketing communication provide a broad theoretical framework for the later semiotic analysis. The chapter on semiotics discusses the modern perspective on the sign theory, offering Ferdinand de Saussure's and Charles Sanders Peirce's points of view. The main focus of the thesis is, however, on the process of the so-called secondary signification and modern myths creation introduced by Roland Barthes in his Mythologies. The marketing communication chapter then introduces several theoretical starting points in the field, various marketing models, and the communication mix with the focus on advertising, its components and potential psychological effects. Mythological and semiotic niveau of the chosen posters of the Third reich

This thesis deals with the poster of the Nazi Third Reich and the ideology shaped by the images and text communication, which it presents. The work looks at the poster as an important medium of communication that served Nazi propaganda to spread National Socialist ideology. This thesis aims to analyse these myths and debunk them in the way how Roland Barthes defines them in his book Mythologies. The author of the diploma thesis applies the traditional method of qualitative research of the media content - mythological and semiotic analysis - to demystify the myths and semiotic characters used in the selected Nazi posters. The first part of the thesis contains terminology, the second part presents the analysis of the individual posters, which are divided into several groups. In the conclusion of the thesis, the author presents a list of common symbols and myths, which are the result of the analysis.

The Bachelor thesis "Marketing communication of the Camel brand: From normal to iconic brand" provides a description of marketing tools of the Camel cigarette brand for the entire period of its existence. More than a century of the brand history is seen mainly from the perspective of the cultural branding. In terms of the paradigm of this approach, it attempts to answer the question whether the Camel brand can be considered iconic. The text is complemented with an extensive visual documentation, which is an essential source of information on the background of historical events.
Byliny of bogatyr Svyatogor: Structural and Comparative Analysis of Narrative

Jiří Dynda Byliny of bogatyr Svyatogor: Structural and Comparative Analysis of Narrative (MA Thesis) Abstract This thesis is an analysis and interpretation of the thirty seven textual variants of the byliny of bogatyr Svyatogor. After the general introduction to the Russian folk epics and after the presentation of issues concerning the study of oral epic literature, author's own structural concept of myth and cultural representations is presented. In the central part the thesis attempts to apply these principles to the narrative of the byliny of Svyatogor and by means of a thorough analysis it indicates, which motives and their relations were fundamental for this narrative to make sense in the local context of bylinaic tradition. The thesis claims that these narratives primarily deal with the themes of the initiation of a young hero, the generation conflict and the transmission of a mentor's position to his apprentice (or, metaphorically, a father's position to his son). This hypothesis is subsequently tested via a two phased comparative analysis of the central motives and their clusters: Firstly, the comparison is made in the context of the bylinaic traditions per se and in the context of the ethnographic situation at the Russian North (internal comparison), and secondly, in the wider scope of the Eurasian...
