A Hegemonic City: Discursive approach to ideology and dominance in development and planning of post-socialist Prague
Orcígr, Václav ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Vacková, Barbora (referee) ; Naxera, Vladimír (referee)
Late capitalist society is dominated by specific attributes of neoliberal ideology, which are inscribed in various ways in the politics of governance in the context of geographical location, political and social organization, economic situation, and other parameters. Discourse plays a specific role in the reproduction and legitimation processes of ideology. This thesis elaborates a theoretical approach to ideological dominance in the topic of urban development, specifically post-socialist Prague. The latter, as an urban space that has undergone major changes of post-revolutionary transformation, becomes a specific arena in which the discursive manifestations of various actors contribute to the production of theoretically identified (and also other yet unrecognized) patterns of dominant ideology. These, in turn, create a discursive field in which reproductive and legitimizing schemas are produced that contribute to the fact that the theme of urban development serves as one of the significant means that reinforce the global hegemonic position of neoliberal capitalism. The thesis builds on Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical approach to identify the actor field within which the processes of reproduction and legitimation occur, and works with Bourdieu's theory of ideological domination, which he developed...

Constructing Participatory Spaces: Involving Citizens into the Urban Development Planning from the View of Planners
Beránková, Petra Alexandra ; Mička, Pavel (advisor) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee)
The work deals with constructing of participatory spaces in the process of urban development planning. The topic of involving citizens into planning is viewed from the point of planners. A concept of participation in this text is conceived in the sense of invented spaces built from above. The research perspective is an interpretative one, anchored in the constructivist epistemology. Therefore the main question is: How do planners reflect involving citizens in the planning? Firstly, the authoress demonstrates the importance of her topic by putting it into the context of wider social dynamics related to the crises of representative democracy and emerging of sub-politics. She reveals that the trend of building participatory opportunities is strengthening. The important question is formulated: How is the role of public in the strategic planning constructed? On the base of analytical induction of semi-structured interviews with planners, the authoress creates her own typology of ideal-type approaches to participation. These types of approaches came out from a distinction of the extent and the aim of spaces of participation. The involvement of citizens can be seen either as building of community, activation of elites, mapping of public preferences or as consultation with local experts.

Erml, Tashi ; Wolák, Radim (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
This thesis analyses the connections between real estate development, territorial development, and the media. The theoretical part presents fundamental topics from the field that are points of focus for the media and places them in a wider context with an emphasis on the housing situation in Prague. It also presents individual aspects that could have an influence on messages in the media, including the role of media ownership and the ideological beliefs of individual journalists. The work further discusses the presentation of developers in the media and their general reputations. The practical part of the paper employs three different research methods. The first is a content analysis focused on mainstream media, where we examine how they cover the topic over a specific period. The second includes a qualitative analysis that is based on interviews with a representative from the public sector, the private sector, and a non-profit. The third method is a quantitative analysis of a representative survey of Prague's inhabitants. In conclusion, the work presents recommendations how media could help cultivate the sector and improve communication between individual actors in real estate and territorial development.

Bajusz, Tadeáš ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis deals with the questions of urban planning and building activity in the time of the Second World War. The research topic of the single case study is Prague in the period of Nazi occupation between March 1939 and May 1945. The thesis tries to challenge this interpretation and using the examples of built objects of the traffic infrastructure and industrial buildings, it shows the ongoing building. The first part shortly summarizes the concepts of Nazi architecture and town planning and connects them with long-term plans with the occupied territories of South-eastern Europe. The second chapter concentrates on the Nazi concepts and plans for remaking Prague and introduces the problematics of building activities during occupation. Based on archival research, the examples of building activity of traffic infrastructure and industrial buildings are shown in the third chapter. The conclusion summarizes the results of the research and critically evaluates the outcomes of the thesis. The thesis is based on...
