Zoo here and there: Observation of Visitor Behavior in the Prague and Reykjavík Zoos
Vysopal, Ondřej Věnek ; Stella, Marco (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
In my diploma thesis I deal with the perception of the modern zoological gardens by observing visitor behavior. The thesis captures the emergence of zoos in Europe in the late 18th and 19th century gardens and their role as a source of knowledge and as a representation of the relationship between man and animal. Based on the observations of visitors I present two European zoological gardens - Prague Zoo and Reykjavík Zoo & Family Park - as spaces reflecting a certain culture. Reykjavík as a place with a simple mission dedicated for the education of small children in several fields, not only in zoology, and Prague as a complex universe, a merge of several different places with different meanings, such as a place for education, relaxation, photographing, standing against the contemporary western critical theories of zoological gardens. Key words: Zoological gardens, visitors, animals, humans, culture, looking at animals, behavior of visitors, Reykjavík, Prague, Iceland
Crime and its perception in urban environment
Jíchová, Jana
Jana Jíchová: Crime and its Perception in Urban Environment ABSTRACT Crime is an important social phenomenon that affects many aspects of the functioning of society and the life of every person. It also represents an important interdisciplinary topic that deals with a number of disciplines, including geography. Logically, there is a thematic and methodological overlap; each of the sciences emphasize on different aspects of crime, using various methods and research approaches, interpretations, and therefore contributes to the knowledge of crime differently. The importance of geography is particularly in the enrichment of the crime research on spatial dimension and contributes to its cognition through analysis of the distribution of crime and studies of perception of crime. Although this type of studies is well established in Western crime research, in the Czech geography is paid to them only little attention. This doctoral thesis introduces geography of crime in the Czech context, discusses its theoretical and methodological developments and its applicability and application in our cities.. More emphasis is put on the concept of fear of crime, which constitutes an essential component of feeling of safety affecting daily life, the use of urban space and spatial mobility of individuals. Better understanding of...

Coexistence of old and new coming residents. Case study research of a village in the Prague suburban zone
Bezpalcová, Tereza ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee)
The thesis responds to recent changes in the hinterland of our bigger cities arising from the process of residential suburbanization. Townships in the immediate vicinity of Prague, which often suffered from a population decline and overall stagnation under socialism, have seen a rapid increase in the number of people coming from the city. The aim of this case study is to examine the nature of social relationships between old- time residents and newcomers in Nučice, a village in the Prague West district. The study combines a questionnaire survey with semi-structured interviews and on-site observation. I have looked at the socio-demographic differences between the two groups, differences in their social status and integration and community activities based on Chapin's behavioural typology on site. I have found out that on average, new residents are younger, better educated and with a higher income than the original population. At the same time, they bring a different lifestyle to the countryside, with different attitudes and opinions. The differences between the natives and the newly-arrived population make their integration more difficult and their social relationships remain largely undeveloped.

Košacký, Marcel ; Hlavačka, Milan (advisor) ; Pokorný, Jiří (referee)
This thesis attempts to capture the development of the position of civil engineers, who tried to achieve the position of an academic educated elite in the society of the 2nd half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The complete professionalisation of engineers was the condition "sine qua non" to the recognition of civil engineers as part of the academic intelligentsia, and that was one of the main reasons why civil engineers sought to enter the municipal government. The aim of the thesis is to complete the research of the transformation of the municipal government from the "honorationes" into the "executive" government in the city of Prague. The thesis describes the historic development of the technical intelligentsia as a new part of academic educated elite, it shows the reasons that led to the engagement of civil engineers in the process of the modernization of the city, and especially shows the rivalry between them and the jurists. The example of engineer Jan Kaftan shows a successful career of one technician, who thanks to, among other skills, his technical knowledge, was elected to the Austrian parliament.
