Other political parties are prevented to exercise their real power and often act only as a parties creating an illusion of democracy in a state where it does not exist. The present thesis deals with the hegemonic party systems in terms of their origin and subsequent transition. The thesis is based on the hypothesis that changing the rules of the hegemonic party will lead it to lose its status and power. As a case study of the hegemonic party regimes serves political system in Mexico, Mozambique and Cambodia. The first chapter defines the notion of a political party, party systems theory and transition mode. The second chapter deals with the hegemonic party systems. The third chapter deals with the case of Mexico and its system of hegemonic party. Findings refute the validity of the above hypothesis, since in many countries, even after the successful completion of the transition, earlier hegemonic parties maintain their power and their electoral support is high.

Prokopová, Barbora ; Kolenovská, Daniela (advisor) ; Novák, Petr (referee)
This Bachelor thesis aims to reveal the roots of the positive interpretations of Stalin in Russia under Putin's presidency (2000-2008). At the beginning of the new millennium we witnessed an increase in popularity and uncritical perception of this Soviet leader in the eyes of the Russian public. The thesis examines on which grounds this nostalgia for the Stalin era is based. It explains how during the 1990s the country was facing a difficult post-communist transition to liberal democracy, which contributed to fostering this sentiment. The thesis also analyzes the results of public survey polls to determine which achievements and values of the Stalin era are appreciated by the citizens of the Russian Federation. Furthermore, it touches upon publications by the Russian academic community in order to explore their interpretation of Joseph Stalin's rule and how they might contribute to his positive assessement by the public. It also shows how the political elite succeeding to power in 2000 deliberately supported and fomented this sentiment of nostalgia; what its concrete steps are; and their motivations and implications. The thesis concludes that the period of chaos under President Boris Yeltsin, when the public felt a decline in the living standards and prestige of the country, had a large influence...

Pozděnová, Jitka ; Neusarová, Jana (referee) ; Kopecký, Martin (advisor)
The topic of this master thesis is Intercultural Education in high schools. As the Czech Republic was largely isolated under communism for more than 40 years, Czech society is still rather homogeneous, with relatively little experience with multiculturalism. Nevertheless, Czech society is slowly changing, mainly due to immigration into the Czech Republic, but also because of process of globalization and the country's entrance into European Union and the implementation of EU legislation and directives. These developments have been recognized by the Ministry of Education and, after a very short academic and public discussion, enormous changes have been introduced into the high school education system. Within two years, high schools are obliged to create their own curriculum aimed at educating students on the importance of civil society for the well-being of democracy. During this critical transition period for high schools, a total of ten school principals and other teachers have been interviewed for the purpose of this thesis. Transition to Democracy in Rwanda with Regard to the Role of Chieftaincy
Syslová, Eliška ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Skalník, Petr (referee)
This diploma thesis "Transition to democracy in Rwanda with Regard to the Role of Chieftaincy" analyses the democratization process in Rwanda, which had run before the genocide as well as after the genocide in 1994. This diploma thesis draws from theoretical conceptions of democratization, which are introduced in the first chapter. In order to understand the circumstances in which the transition to democracy is taking place, the history of Rwanda since the beginning of colonization until the first republic is analysed. In the following period, the influence of important elements forming the shape of the second republic regime is depicted. The essence of this thesis is the analysis of the democratization processes, which genesis are to be found in the second half of the 1980's. The democratization and attitudes of individual participants are analysed until 2003, when a new constitution was approved. The events of the genocide are described briefly. The final part deals with clientship and chieftaincy and their role during the democratization process. The theoretical basis of the analysis derives from the work of Max Weber. The importace of clientship after 1994 is analysed on the gacaca tribunals. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Democratization of Portugal and Romania: is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?
Kasper, Petr ; Kučera, Rudolf (advisor) ; Šušlíková, Lada (referee)
In my paper, I will attempt to answer the question "Is it possible to study transitions to democracy by unified models?" I will seek for an answer using cases of Romania and Portugal, the two states where authoritarian rule had the form of personal dictatorship and was overthrown without government cooperation. My assumption is that studying by unified model is not possible and I will try to find evidence for this statement. In my paper I use theoretical work of Samuel P. Huntington, Vladimíra Dvořáková and Jiří Kunc who study types of transitions to democracy. Dvořáková and Kunc also describe phases of these transitions. From work of Adam Przeworski I use the view of democratization causes. Using these theoretical concepts I will study specific cases of democratization in Romania and Portugal. I will use works of Miroslav Tejchman, Kurt W. Treptow and Jiří Kocian in case of Romania and Jan Klíma, Simona Binková, Zuzana Budinová and Kenneth Maxwell in case of Portugal.
