The Development of the Cult of St. John of Nepomuk to Canonization

The cult of St. John of Nepomuk was one of the characteristic features of life in the Habsburg Empire and other European catholic countries in the early modern period. The origins of veneration for the medieval martyr were tied to Prague, to his tomb in the cathedral, to the Metropolitan Chapter. The saint became famous above all for the conviction that he gave his life for the preservation of the confessional secret. With his death he preserved the good name of the Czech Queen Joan, who confessed to him; on the other hand, he is said to have punished those who were disrespectful of his own posthumous reputation and grave. He therefore became an immensely popular defender of honour and reputation, values highly valued in the early modern society. Under the influence of the Prague Chapter, St. John's veneration was taken up by the Habsburgs, the Catholic rulers who ascended the throne of John's torturer, Wenceslaus IV, and John's spiritual daughter, Joan. They venerated the saint as one of the patron saints of the Bohemian kingdom, which they ruled. The recatholicization of this kingdom and its associated countries enabled the growth of St John's veneration, which by the end of the 17th century had already begun to spread vigorously beyond their borders. Reflection of priest celibacy in contemporary theology and culture Abstract The Bachelor's thesis describes the reflection of priest celibacy in contemporary theology and culture. This topic is part of a wider discussion about human sexuality in theology and history. A part of the thesis includes a historical review which is connected to the current systematic reflection. The identity of priests and the way of speaking about celibacy and priesthood in present theology is very different, the text examines the experience of sexual abuse in the church. The thesis takes notice of the different approaches and possible consequences of them, e.g. the image of women in texts that discuss the celibate way of life. It also observes the possibility of a better connection to the present culture and social sciences. ANNOTATION: The bachelor thesis focuses on the relation between knowledge of Christianity (as a religion most relevant for Czech republic) and the depth of spiritual life. In the theoretical part, the relevance and knowledge of Christianity are examined, also the problem of the spiritual life, spirituality and religiosity from the psychological and theological point of view, and also their growth. The empirical part focuses on the constuction and statistical characteristics of the questionnaire of spiritual life and the test of knowledge of Christianity. Their results, collected data, hypotheses and research problem (relationship between spirituality and knowledge) are analyzed and interpretated. The Phenomenon of Scouting from Philosphical Perspective

The presented historical-philosophical diploma thesis depicts the scouting phenomenon, which demands a specific type of morality and produces specific individuality. We interpret a scout human through the following themes: the personˈs relation to nature and to God. We will demonstrate that contact with nature is closely related to the demand placed on versatile personality development in the sense of the Ancient Greek term kalokagathia. Using the writings of J. J. Rousseau, E. T. Seton and H. Thoreau, we will focus on an idealized form of the return to nature. We will further delve into scoutsˈ attitudes towards the first Scouting principle: Duty to God. Last, but not least, we will demonstrate that only mature consciences establish free and responsible action. This action is, however, conditioned by a dialogue with a higher force. A scout human is therefore defined by both; their specific attitude to nature and their acknowledgement of spiritual life. Only a life in harmony with those two constants leads scouts towards meaningful humanity.

Spiritual and cultural life in the Terezin ghetto 1941-1945

This disertation is entiteled by "Spiritual and cultural life in the Terezin ghetto 1941 - 1945". The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first part persues to a short introduction of a historical context which lead to formation of the ghetto. The next chapter deals with the Terezin ghetto. There is mentioned a few curcumstances of creation of it, living conditions, which were in it and also a nazi propaganda. The third part is followed up with the spitirual life in ghetto, how it all had been practised and there is also an effort to define a meaning of the spiritual life for people in the ghetto. The last chapter deals with the cultural life, which were developed in the Terezin ghetto. There is described how the cultural life in Terezin had started and also the greatest pieces of art, which were created on a ground of the ghetto. The chosed metodology for this disertation is an analyse of documentations which are preserved after survivors and then the analyse of professional literature which were written about a topic of this thesis.
