Úlehla, Vojtěch ; Netrdová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee)
The diploma thesis is aimed at the issue of delimitation the primary schools' catchment areas (PSCA). It follows on from the bachelor's thesis, in which a map representation and evaluation of the current delimitation of PSCA in the territory of Prague 3 Municipal District was realized. The diploma thesis deals with this topic in more depth from a theoretical-conceptual point of view, it describes the discussion of approaches to the distribution of children into primary schools during compulsory school attendance and the parental school choice in various countries, as well as diverse aspects that influence the delimitation of PSCA in Czechia. The focus of the thesis is the methodological part, the aim is to discuss available data sources related to the topic suitable for work in the environment of geographic information systems (GIS) and possible map representations of PSCA. An important part is dedicated to the proposal for the delimitation of PSCA using GIS as an allocation analysis. Everything is illustrated using the example of the Czech capital city, Prague, the current delimitation is compared with the proposal, and the appropriateness of current delimitation of PSCA is evaluated. Keywords: catchment area, primary school, Prague, map representation, geographic information systems, allocation...

Smith Slámová, Radka ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Šeďová, Klára (referee) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee)
Middle-class choice of selective schools and classes at the elementary school level Radka Smith Slámová ABSTRACT Fear of downward mobility has led middle-class parents to seek new strategies that enable them to achieve social reproduction through formal schooling. In the Czech educational context, middle- class parents' school choice strategies as their child enters the increasingly diversified elementary school level have not been explored. The dissertation aims to detail why middle-class parents in various contexts across the country consider choosing a selective school/track. Drawing on the grounded theory research design and 28 in-depth interviews, I depict middle-class parents' circumstances, assumptions, and perceptions surrounding the choice of a selective school/track in the public school system. The results revealed that parents' choices were primarily informed by their negative view of a typical Czech school - a view constructed in the light of their memories of their own schooling, "hot" knowledge from their parental networks, their own child-rearing convictions, and experiences with their child's preschool institutions. The parents expected that their family's supposed incongruence with the environment of public schools would disadvantage their child in a typical elementary school, despite them...
Alternative class in a public school
Janďourková, Zuzana ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Dvořák, Dominik (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the founding principles and function of two alternative classes in two public schools in small towns. These conditions are analysed in context of differentiation of primary school and potential impact of alternative classes in public schools on equal chances. The first chapter will briefly describe common features of alternative schools, and I will list the characteristics of some alternative movements in the Czech Republic. I will then focus in more detail on the 'Step by Step' programme, which is used in one of the schools I examine, and its bases. The second school in my study follows a programme stemming from this, which is also influenced by 'Natural schools' and other alternative methods. The next chapter of this thesis will look at the differences and unequal access to education. The empirical section of this thesis presents two case studies of alternative classes in public schools. For the purposes of this study, a qualitative method has been applied. I try to find out the reasons for establishment of these classes and refusal of the classic education by observing the classes during teaching, and through interviews with all participants. I focus on the admission process of pupils to these classes and whether the conditions of the studies in these classes...
How Pupils and Their Parents Evaluate its Transfer to Multi-year Gymnasium?
Slanařová, Jana ; Greger, David (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee)
The multi-year gymnasium is a part of the Czech educational system for the long time. Those gymnasiums are one of the most discussed institutions in terms of usefulness. Various studies are made in dependence on that trying to find reasons for choosing multi-year gymnasiums (as thesis "Why Do Primary School Children Choose Multi-year Gymnasiums?", which preceded this work). The aim of this diploma thesis is already the next step: figuring out, if gymnasium met pupils' expectations, and also to receive feedback and evaluation of their parents. It focuses on pupils' academic self-concept, on problems associated with transfer to multi-year gymnasium and on positives, which the pupils would not probably meet at elementary school with. Ninth grade primary school students in the town of Roudnice and their choice of the further course of education
Štubňová, Miroslava ; Greger, David (advisor) ; Walterová, Eliška (referee)
The aim of the thesis entitled Ninth grade primary school students in the town of Roudnice and their choice of the further course of education is to describe the factors that influence one's course of education, especially the choice of upper secondary educational institutions they decide to study, and empirically map this issue within the town of Roudnice. The theoretical part is divided into chapters according to factors that significantly influence students' choice of educational institutions during the ninth year of primary school. These factors are following: socio-economic background, family and gender, as well as psychological and developmental aspects of adolescence, during which the choice of a secondary school tends to be realized. These categories are then introduced through Czech and foreign researches. We also look at the transition between the lower and upper secondary education in terms of legislation and career counselling. The main part of the thesis is the empirical part, which includes a detailed description of our quantitative research and data analysis. The aim of the research is to map the decision making process in relation to the choice of the further course of education by Roudnice ninth grade students, or more specifically (1) what the most common characteristics of schools...
Integration of Migrants through Education
Kulesza, Izabela ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Kohoutek, Jan (referee)
Bibliographic note KULESZA, Izabela A. PATH DEPENDENCE IN AMERICAN PUBLIC EDUCATION . Mater thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Sociological Studies. Supervisor Prof. PhDr. Arnošt Veselý, Ph.D. Abstract This thesis is concerned with the study of public education in the United States as a path-dependent phenomenon. By reviewing the historical background of the institution of education, several key sequences emerge that are foundational principles. They are: a decentralized system, secular education, universal access, decreasing the achievement gap and global competition. Testing these sequences against school choice theories shows the foundational principles behind traditional public schooling in America are being challenged. The institutional reproduction of this pathway is likely to be interrupted in the utilitarian, functional, power and legitimation explanations of path dependence theory. Keywords public education, school choice, path dependence theory Range of thesis: 66
Primary school choice - an important mechanism influencing equity in education
Simonová, Jaroslava ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee) ; Šeďová, Klára (referee)
Primary school choice - an important mechanism influencing equity in education Jaroslava Simonová Abstract This dissertation describes the process of school choice in primary education and the factors influencing it. Using a qualitative grounded theory design, the work builds on data from 41 interviews with parents from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Parents' decision-making about school choice is shaped primarily by the organizational needs of parents and their inner need to be a "good parent". When being interviewed, parents report a number of criteria, which, according to them, are important in school choice. However, for many of them they fail to obtain relevant and reliable information. Therefore, they may eventually make a decision based on criteria other than those referred to as important, although they are rarely aware of this shift and the change in criteria. There are three unavoidable criteria in decision-making: availability, reputation and the emotions that parents experienced at school during their visit. The child's needs are the important intervening conditions. They play an important role, especially if the parents feel that their child has some particular needs. The parents' experience with the education system and their personality characteristics are also important. The significant...
Selection of pupils into classes and schools applying the pedagogy of Maria Montessori
Holečková, Nikola ; Straková, Jana (advisor) ; Simonová, Jaroslava (referee)
This diploma thesis examines the pupil selection to Marie Montessori pedagogical classes and schools. The aim of the thesis was to find out how the individual schools choose pupils in Marie Montessori classes and schools. Furthermore, it was examined what reasons parents have to choose this pedagogy for their child and what conditions parents and pupils have to fulfill for admission to this education. Last but not least, I analyzed how the admission procedure is taking place. The basic research design was a multi-case study. I chose four primary schools with this pedagogy in the big city as well as in smaller towns. I divided the research into two parts. In the first part I conducted semi-structured interviews with employees of selected schools and with parents of children from Montessori classes. In the second part I observed the first class admission interviews. I have found out that each school has defined pupil selection requirements and that these requirements vary considerably between schools. Parents opt for the Montessori School because of its individual approach to individuals. Teachers believe that it is appropriate that parents apply the same educational methods at home and that they would like to apply this as an admission criterion. The whole admission interviews were the same as in...
