"Representation of the environment in Russian and Czech press" This diploma thesis deals with the representation of the environment in the Russian and Czech press. For my research I chose two news weekly papers: Respekt and Argumenty a fakta issued between the years 2007-2011. The theoretical part describes the development of the media, their influence on society, mechanism of news construction (agenda setting, news values, objectivity, bias, access to news, work with sources), the development and state of the Czech and Russian media, concepts of nature and the development of environmental reporting. In the practical part I found out how the environment and nature are viewed and interpreted by these printed media in the content of their messages. Key words: environment; nature; media; representation; agenda-setting; content analysis; frame analysis; framing; weekly magazíne; Respekt; Argumenty a fakta
Civic engagement in Romania - testing the applicability of mainstream theories on the winter protests of 2012
Macsut, Andrei-Cosmin ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Maslowski, Nicolas (referee)
The past few years have seen the emergence of new types of civic engagement. Citizens are now more capable to organize themselves than ever before and this creates a new pattern of social mobilization that has not previously been the centre of academic focus. This work analyses the particular case of the Romanian winter protests of 2012 in an attempt to prove that current mainstream theories of resource mobilization and framing do not fully explain the emergence of unstructured movements. The results aim to pave the way for a new theory of civic engagement that fits the newly observed realities and could be generalized to explain all forms of structured or unstructured participation to collective action.
Thomas versus Hill and Kavanaugh versus Ford: Shifts in the cases' media framing by the The New York Times
Abstract The way or ways the media captures individuals or events are referred as framing. This is a depiction of the situation for the public who accepts or rejects it. These are certain aspects of perceived reality and their emphasis. In this work, a content analysis of articles presented by one of the most famous American dailies - The New York Times - in the cases of appointing candidates...

Pražák, Kryštof ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of the topic of antisemitism in articles published between 2019 and 2020 on five chosen Czech news websites iDNES.cz, Aktuálně.cz, Seznam Zprávy, iROZHLAS.cz and ČT24. The aim of the thesis is to describe media imagine of the topic of antisemitism and how the selected media inform about antisemitism, by using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Theoretical part of the thesis is mainly focused on the definiton of the concepts, well known from the media and communication studies such as agenda-setting, framing, gatekeeping, news values or the history of propaganda. This part of the thesis also focuses on the topic of antisemitism itself, it's history, definition and modern usage of this term. Methodological part is mainly focused on brief description of the five chosen news websites, their history and ownership structure, followed by defining the selected methods of analysis that are used in this bachelor thesis. The result of the analysis was that both public service media and private media reflected the topic of antisemitism most often in the form of a news article. Foreign events predominate in all monitored media and surprisingly, no significant differences were found between public and private media in the types of sources they used.

Stříbrný, Petr ; Mouralová, Magdalena (advisor) ; Gargulák, Karel (referee)
The aim of my bachelor thesis is to describe the media image of the apprentice education in Czech Republic between years 2005 and 2018. I will describe what was contained in newspaper articles related to the topic in chosen years. First of all I will look up and sort out related articles. Then I will analyse how the apprentice education is presented in major newspaper media. Chosen method of analysing is frame analysis with which one I will be able to qualitatively examine the content of the media image. I will find out context, coherence, impression and results of those articles. Main purpose is an identification of frameworks occurring in the given issue and their sponsors. I will also find out main problems of each framework, their causes and suggested or implied solving of problems in apprentice education.
Twitter as an additional battlefield? Analysis of Israel Defense Forces' social media campaign during the Great March of Return
Plíštilová, Tereza ; Záhora, Jakub (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
The respective master's thesis examines the relationship between frames and narratives and how they resonate with images on social media. In the present thesis I research how Israel Defense Forces framed the protests in Gaza also known as the Great March of Return from 30 March 2018 to 30 March of 2019 on Twitter. While analyzing the twitter account of Israel Defense Forces, I apply Entman's (1993) elements of framing and identify broader strategic narratives that Israel currently employs. The broader strategic narratives include "Israel as the only democracy in the Middle East"; "Israel as a startup nation" and "Israel as the leader in combating Islamic terrorism". In the theoretical part I also reflect on previous research and studies engaging with social media and its use by militaries. In the analytical part I identify individual frames that Israel Defense Forces have repeatedly employed during the protests in the respective timeframe. Each frame is accompanied by visual content and if available by the strategic narratives.
Does Media Coverage Help to Understand Conflicts? Redefining the Concept of Peace Journalism and a Comparative Analysis of Cyprus and Nagorno Karabach Conflicts in the Czech Media
Hroch, Jaroslav ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Záhora, Jakub (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to contribute to theoretically sound concept of Peace Journalism, which combines theoretical foundations from two spheres: conflict and peace studies and media studies. Influence of journalists as intervening force and explaining factor with regard to (violent) conflict is neglected. However, Peace Journalism is not theoretically strong and builds upon dualistic definition vis-á-vis so-called War Journalism. The concept of Peace Journalism has to overcome this delamination in order to reflect theoretical underpinnings of conflict transformation theory and conflict analysis. Moreover, Peace Journalism has to differentiate media according to an involvement of given societies in a conflict. This offers an opportunity to specifically and accurately analyse news coverage of conflicts. Case studies analysing Czech coverage of Cyprus and Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts illustrates this approach. The coverage is essentially flat, distorts a reality of the conflict, pays attention to visual and physical aspects of the conflict and closes the conflicts in arbitrary time boundaries.
Téma uprchlictví v denících Mladá fronta Dnes a v Hospodářských novinách
ANDĚL, Marek
The topic most frequently covered in the Czech media in 2015 was the migration crisis. This topic is treated in the present thesis by means of frame analysis, resulting in a description of a phenomenon of how media compete for a higher share of the press market through presentation of migration crisis. The research is based on articles on the topic of refugee crisis published in two Czech dailies, Mladá Fronta Dnes and Hospodářské noviny. Applying the concept of frame analysis, the author attempts to compare how and how frequently the two dailies covered the topic in 2015, provides an outline and historical background of the period, and describes the methods employed in the research, in particular the above-mentioned frame analysis.
Framing Climate Policies: Discourse Analysis of Carbon Pricing Debates in Canada and Australia
Davidová, Kateřina ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
Framing Climate Policies: Discourse Analysis of Carbon Pricing Debates in Canada and Australia Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze and compare the discourses of Stephen Harper and Tony Abbot during federal election campaigns where climate policies played an unusually important role (2008 in Canada and 2013 in Australia). The study builds on a hypothesis, that according to the post-materialist theory and the Environmental Kuznets Curve, such economically advanced, democratic countries as Canada and Australia should be at the vanguard of climate action. However, in reality they are some of the worst performers when it comes to tackling carbon emissions. Both Harper and Abbott publicly promised to put in serious efforts to tackle climate change. However, when the question of setting a national price on carbon came up for discussion during the above-mentioned election campaigns, they both not only opposed it, but even tried to discredit it by framing the whole debate in overwhelmingly negative terms. In order to uncover what kind of frames and other discursive strategies the two politicians used to shape the debate, critical discourse analysis was applied to their public statements on the policy of carbon tax. Results of this analysis show that they used all of the frames that are typically associated...
