How much does intelligence predict lifetime income? A Meta-Analysis

Despite growing interest and extensive empirical research in economic returns to ability, a consensus regarding the true impact of intelligence on financial outcomes remains elusive. While psychology literature has made e orts to unify divergent findings, economics is yet to produce a comprehensive meta- analysis addressing this issue. Addressing this gap, our thesis utilizes cutting- edge meta-analytic techniques to analyze a unique dataset of 765 estimates drawn from 38 studies, providing a clearer picture of intelligence's impact on income. We uncover a notable positive publication bias, which, after correction, yields a diminished yet statistically significant e ect. Specifically, our results indicate that a standard deviation increase in cognitive ability results in a less than 10% increase in financial outcomes. Leveraging over 30 variables in our Bayesian and frequentist averaging models, we identify key determinants of this e ect, including the data collection year, outcome specifications, methodologi- cal choices, country-specific factors, and the number of estimates reported per study. Additionally, when adjusting for factors such as gender, residential loca- tion, work experience, and family attributes, we observe substantial variations in e ect size. Military expenditure and economic growth: A meta-analysis

This master's thesis provides a comprehensive meta-analysis inspecting the impact of military expenditures on economic growth. Its objective is to validate several hypotheses using a wide range of studies and the latest methods. The hypotheses included in this thesis are as follows. First, military expenditures reduce economic growth. Second, military expenditures retard growth in less- developed countries. Third, the effect of military expenditures on economic growth is non-linear. The general findings of this thesis support the first hypothesis. This result originates mainly from the significantly negative impact found in recent studies. The thesis also finds indirect evidence in favor of the second hypothesis. Even though the analysis did not find a significant impact on less-developed countries per se, a negative effect associated with African countries provides a persuasive substitute in this regard. Last, this thesis did not find any solid evidence in favor of the non-linearity hypothesis. This is the first time the effect of military expenditures on economic growth was analyzed using the latest methods of meta-analysis and provides robust input into a heated debate within the subfield of peace economics provoked by the recent events. 1

Marginal Abatement Costs of Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Meta-Analysis

This thesis uses up-to-date meta-analysis methods to produce a systematic summary of the literature on marginal abatement costs (MAC) of greenhouse gas emissions. It collects 242 MAC estimates for 2030 and 2050 from 59 studies. Besides the usual tests for publication bias, the study employs several modern non-linear tests, such as the TOP 10, the Kink method, the Stem method, and others. Subsequently, Bayesian model averaging is performed for the first time in MAC literature to reveal a mild negative publication bias for the MAC in 2050. The thesis reveals that newer studies provide higher estimates of MAC. Other factors influencing MAC estimation are the size of stabilisation targets, emissions baseline, utilising the LEAP model, the inclusion of other greenhouse gases besides carbon dioxide, and considering the long-run decision making. Several robustness checks are conducted along the way to confirm the selection of the dataset and the robustness of the BMA analysis (using weighted BMA, FMA, OLS). The true value of MAC in 2030 corrected for publication bias is around 32 EUR/tCO2-eq, while for 2050, it is 59 EUR/tCO2-eq. 1

Dendrochronological dating of catastrophic slope movements

Mass-movements are one example of natural processes that can pose a serious risk for human beings and their possessions. Dendrochronology, a method capable of their reconstruction, can provide parameters of former events, which can be used for planning protective measures. The possibilities for the application of dendrochronological methods have been tested by means of meta-analysis of electronic and printed scientific articles and a case study focused on former avalanche activity in Schustler's avalanche path (Labský důl, Krkonoše Mts.). The main conclusion of the first one is the clear spatial disproportion of the recent dendrogeomorphological research activities - e.g. the dating of avalanches is typical for mountains of Montana (USA); the Alpine region (mainly Switzerland), on the other hand, absolutely dominates in the research of debris-flows. In the case study, the analysis of material with well-chosen indicators led to high accuracy results comparable with the results of scientific articles focused on avalanches, and made the identification of 14 years (in the period 1953-2007) with potential avalanche acitvity possible. Meta-analysis: User motivations to use mobile dating apps

This diploma thesis focuses on the motivations of users to create an account within the location- based mobile dating applications. The work is processed by statistical analysis of already published studies dealing with the same or similar topics. The main target of this paper is to calculate the effect size of individual motives in relation to the sex of the respondents. The diploma thesis starts with description of the history of online dating, specific mobile applications included in my meta-analysis, user behavior in individual stages of using these applications (profile settings, selection of other profiles, communication and its development in time), followed by the methodological part where the meta-analysis itself is desribed, the process of its creation and its weak and strong aspects. In the following chapter the results of the meta-analysis and their interpretation are presented as well as self-reflection of this paper along the recommendations for future researches. Analysis helped to reveal the differences between the sexes and also helped to synthesize the acquired studies dealing with this topis. Context of agenda-setting in the context of Czech media studies

This dissertation thesis follows from a wide stream of considerations of the relationship between the mass media, public and politics; in particular detail, it deals with a specific concept which attempts to grasp, model and empirically examine this relationship. The main goals of the thesis can be in short divided into two interrelated areas. The first aim is to introduce the concept of agenda setting to the Czech academic environment, with its theoretical, terminological and research frame for an analysis of relationships between the mass media content, dynamics of public opinion, and the political sphere. The second aim is to analyze how agenda setting processes are theoretically grounded and studied in the Czech social studies. The theoretical part of the thesis is structured according to two perspectives: diachronic and synchronic. In the diachronic perspective, I try to grasp the social context and historical origins of agenda-setting as a concept, its development, main trends, and developmental lines. This way, I move forward to the synchronic perspective and describe academic grounding of agenda-setting; I give a detailed analysis of the present level of the agenda-setting research and the main research areas through available classifications. Intracranial Aneurysms - Treatment Options and Natural Course. Safety and Efficacy of Treatment Strategies for Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms are an uncommon, heterogeneous group of aneurysms with poorer neurological outcomes compared to other intracranial aneurysms. At first, as part A, we conducted a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatment strategies for PICA-aneurysms. Subsequently, as part B, we performed a multicenter retrospective study to analyze the outcome in a large series of patients treated with contemporary microsurgical and endovascular techniques. METHODS: For the meta-analysis, a systematic search of Medline, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science was done for studies published through November 2015. We included studies that described treatment of PICA-aneurysms with ≥10 patients. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool the following outcomes: complete occlusion, technical success, periprocedural morbidity/mortality, stroke rates, aneurysm recurrence/rebleed, CN-palsies rates, and long-term neurological morbidity/mortality. As the second part, aiming to report the current trends and results in treatment strategies for PICA-aneurysms, records of 94 patients treated for PICA-aneurysms between 2000 and 2015 at 3 large referral neurovascular centers were retrospectively reviewed. Migration and Development: A Meta-Analysis

The current literature on international migration is diverse, and there is an ongoing debate as to the size and magnitude of the development-migration nexus, and no consensus about this effect has been reached. In this thesis, I explore quantitatively the effect of GDP (as a measure of development) on migration using a meta-analysis approach by synthesizing the empirical findings on this effect, adjusting for the biases, and controlling for the design of the studies. To examine the phenomenon in a systematic way, I collected 179 regression coefficients from 40 different articles, where the results suggest a weak presence of publication selection. Nevertheless, when correcting for publication bias, the effect of development on migration is rather small. Additionally, to explain the inherent model uncertainty, the Bayesian model averaging (BMA) was conducted. The results suggest that studies controlling for the variables of direct foreign investment and age results in a larger effect of development on migration and that the presence of country- level differences boosts migration inflows, particularly in OECD countries.

Trading volume and expected stock returns: a meta-analysis

I investigate the relationship between expected stock returns and trading volume. I collect together 522 estimates from 46 studies and conduct the first meta-analysis in this field. Use of Bayesian model averaging and Frequentist model averaging help me to discover the most influential factors that affect the return-volume relationship, since I control for more than 50 differences among primary articles such as midyear and type of data, length of the primary dataset, size of market, or model employed. In the end, I find out that the relation between expected stock returns and trading volume is rather negligible. On the other hand, the contemporaneous relation between returns and volume is positive. These two findings cut the mixed results from previously written studies. Moreover, the investigated relationship is influenced by the size of country of interest and the level of its development. Besides the primary studies that employ higher data frequency provide substantially larger estimates than the studies with data from longer time periods. On the contrary, there is no difference among different estimation methodologies used. Finally, I employ classical and modern techniques such as stem-based methodology for publication bias detection, and I find evidence for it in this field. 1
