An Outlaw Journalist's Journey through an Era Decadent and Depraved: Hunter S. Thompson in the context of America of the 1960s and early 1970s.
Stárek, Jiří ; Robbins, David Lee (advisor) ; Ulmanová, Hana (referee)
The thesis aims to explore the artistic personality of Hunter S. Thompson, one of the most distinctive cultural figures of post-war America, and his genesis as an author, journalist, and a counterculture idol of the 1960s. The era is now widely regarded as a turning point in contemporary American history as its deep-rooted values and norms were, over the course of a decade, gradually transformed by the young generation of social and political activists toward allegedly a more tolerant and liberal kind of community. Crucial in such an endeavor was the role of the countercultural movement that produced some of the most capable intellectual minds of the time, including Thompson. The paper thus analyzes the role and nature of the alternative culture in America as perceived by one of its most observant participants. Also, the thesis focuses on the author's role in establishing a new genre called New Journalism which can be linked with the era's countercultural efforts as well. In general, Thompson, in his texts, examines various phenomena surrounding the counterculture and provides us with a distinctive portrayal of the era's zeitgeist. However, unlike some of his contemporaries, he also remembers to examine numerous flaws and fallacies existing within contemporary American society, the American Dream...

Hipster Subculture in Czech Republic
Zahornadská, Eva ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Soukup, Václav (referee)
The subject of the thesis Hipster Subculture in Czech Republic is to chart contemporary urban culture. The first part defines the subculture concept itself and handles especially the postmodern approaches. The second, core, part prospects origins of the hipster subculture and defines its era. It subsequently describes a hipster based on various topics associated with the subculture identification (age and gender, appearance, taste in music, education, profession and economical situation, interests, residency, life attitudes and stances and subcultural identity). Hipster subculture confrontation with both negative and positive criticism in mass society follows in this study. The theoretical part of the report is based not only on the previous expert study in the field but also panel discussions, American society survey results as well as journalistic style essays. Finally, the third part, containing semistructured interview research, should validate and specify the data gained from previous chapters and also fit the hipster subculture into the Czech environment. The thesis aims to construct the definition of a hipster and answer the introduced research topics.
Paper Agora: The Samizdat Periodical Vokno and the Provincial Czech Underground in Historical and Social Perspective
Tharp, Martin ; Maslowski, Nicolas (advisor) ; Rulíková, Markéta (referee) ; Kilias, Jaroslaw (referee)
Dissertation Abstract Paper Agora: The Samizdat Periodical Vokno and the Provincial Czech Underground in Historical and Social Perspective Martin Tharp, Department of Historical Sociology. The present work takes as its central subject a Czech samizdat publication, the magazine Vokno, primarily during its years of illegal operation, i.e. from 1979 until 1990, considered within the wider context of civil and cultural resistance to the oppressive social order of European state socialism. It treats Vokno as an instance of social action amid state forces inimical towards it, discussing the interplay and interaction of oppositional practice and the forces it opposes, both of state authority and more subtle ones of state cultural hegemony. It is argued that Vokno formed an attempt at a "counterculture" in the late 20th-century sense of an impulsive critique of a regimented modernity, yet within its immediate conditions was necessitated to assume three specific forms: as an aesthetic sub/counterculture, as a social network with differing levels of involvement and connections (whether to established intellectual dissent or to other social strata), and finally as a conscious oppositional social movement.

Ježková, Karolína ; Charvát, Jan (advisor) ; Mlejnek, Josef (referee)
1 Abstract The bachelor's thesis deals with the collective of the Autonomous Social Center Klinika in Žižkov, on the example of which it examines the internal values of its members and then raises the question of whether it is possible to find aspects of subculture, counterculture or social movement in this collective. The theoretical part focuses on a summary of the development of the subcultural, countercultural and social movements studies and then presents the definitions of these concepts in the post-soviet Czech Republic. Subsequently, I describe the development of Czech squatting. Important part of the thesis are interviews with former members of the collective. The conclusion is that collective was counterculturally oriented with the features of social movement. Subcultural aspects were present to a very limited amount, because the members were actively suppresing them.
The content analysis of Czech feminist zines
Kopecká, Mahulena ; Krobová, Tereza (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
Cílem práce bylo prostřednictvím kvalitativní obsahové analýzy najít témata, skrze která vybrané české feministické ziny (tedy neprofesionální nezávislé publikace, které jejich tvůrci produkují a distribuují sami) prezentují myšlenky feminismu a problematiku ženské emancipace, a následně porovnat, jak ziny jednotlivá témata pojímají. Šlo vždy o dvě vybraná čísla zinů Wicca, Esbat, Bloody Mary a Přímá cesta, vycházejících z českého anarchistického hnutí.
