The Development of the Cult of St. John of Nepomuk to Canonization

The cult of St. John of Nepomuk was one of the characteristic features of life in the Habsburg Empire and other European catholic countries in the early modern period. The origins of veneration for the medieval martyr were tied to Prague, to his tomb in the cathedral, to the Metropolitan Chapter. The saint became famous above all for the conviction that he gave his life for the preservation of the confessional secret. With his death he preserved the good name of the Czech Queen Joan, who confessed to him; on the other hand, he is said to have punished those who were disrespectful of his own posthumous reputation and grave. He therefore became an immensely popular defender of honour and reputation, values highly valued in the early modern society. Under the influence of the Prague Chapter, St. John's veneration was taken up by the Habsburgs, the Catholic rulers who ascended the throne of John's torturer, Wenceslaus IV, and John's spiritual daughter, Joan. They venerated the saint as one of the patron saints of the Bohemian kingdom, which they ruled. One thousand and fifty years of the Bishopric of Prague

The book is dedicated to the 1050th anniversary of the foundation of the Prague bishopric. The first block of studies places the topic of the first Czech diocese in the Central European context of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires, the related ecclesiastical institutions and the Christianization processes in their individual parts, e.g. among the Polabian Slavs. The second block of texts traces the processes leading to the building of the foundations of the Bohemian diocese, its establishment and its continuity with the Great Moravian ecclesiastical beginnings. Equally important are the probes tracing the process of Christianization of Czech society, the relationship between the Prague bishops and the Czech ruler, and the emergence of church organization. The book concludes with studies tracing the Czech and Moravian bishoprics at the turning points of the Hussite and Reformation periods, the Recatholization and the reforms of Joseph II.

In the context of the 1050th anniversary of the founding of the Prague bishopric, the study focuses on the topic of the first Czech diocese and places it in the Central European context of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires, related ecclesiastical institutions and Christianization processes. In the form of a probe, it traces the importance of the mission for the establishment of the Prague bishopric. In this context, it discusses issues related to sacred architecture, liturgical equipment and written culture inseparably linked to the new Christian education and church administration.

Sun Simiao - life of an immortal

Sun Simiao - life of an immortal : Abstract This thesis studies the traditional perception on an important Chinese Tang dynasty physician and alchemist Sun Simiao 孫思邈 (581-682), which is examined on his biography from the tenth century Taoist collection of hagiographies Xuxianzhuan 續仙傳. The study begins through an analysis of the oldest available sources of the biography of Sun Simiao. This analysis can build upon the work of N. Sivin, summarize it, add some details if needed and approach it with a critical attitude. The study of Sun's biography focuses on the archetypal categories which were connected to him, such as recluses, masters of methods and immortals. First the structure of his biography is compared with the usual structure of biographies of exemplary officials. Then parts of the biography that correspond to each category are chosen. On their basis the extent to which the biography of Sun Simiao represents only a characterisation of the given category or truly reflects the real his real life, or at least what we know about his life from the available sources. In the end the later development of Sun Simiao's traditional Taoist perception is briefly outlined providing a broader perspective of the main subject. The Cults of Hungarian saints of the 11th century

Peter BUČKO, The Cults of Hungarian saints of the 11th century. Praha 2021. Doctoral dissertation. Abstract The presented dissertation deals with the cult of the oldest saints of the Kingdom of Hungary. These are persons who were canonized in 1083 - King Stephen, his son Emeric, Bishop Gerard and in 1083, also Zobor monks and hermits Zoerard-Andrew and Benedict, and in 1192 King Ladislas joined them. The work also examines saints without a documented official hagiography, namely the Great Moravian ruler Svatopluk, the bishop of Pécs Maurus and the Hungarian king Solomon. A wide source base was used to analyse cults and individual hagiographies. Emphasis was also placed on preserved material monuments, patronage, and feasts.

Verbal Expressions of Reverence for St. John of Nepomuk in Vilém Bitnar's Saint-John- Questionnaire The goal of this thesis is a description of verbal expressions of reverence (legends, songs, prayers etc.) for St. John of Nepomuk in the Czech lands, which were collected by Výbor svatojanský in the questionnaire edited by Vilém Bitnar. This questionnaire was sent out to Czech and Moravian parishes at the occasion of the 200th anniversary of canonization of St. John of Nepomuk in 1929 and now it is deposited in the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature in Bitnar's estate. The mutual points in the questionnaire are seeked as well as regional specifics. These are situated into context of trends in religious life in the Czech lands in 1920s in general and also of relationship between contemporary Czech society and the Roman Catholic Church with reverence for St. John of Nepomuk. Bitnar's questionnaire is also situated into context of other Bitnar's scientific and publication activities. Canonization of Saint Louis

This Bachelor's thesis focuses on the process of canonization of the Louis IX of France. Although king Louis earned the reputation of saint during his lifetime and canonization process began soon after his death, the case proceeded slowly unexpectedly. A major impact in this process played high politics. The turning point came when Pope Boniface VIII. needed achieve a peace with Louis's grandson, the king Philip IV of France. The process was then closed in 1297 by canonization of Louis, but a final reconciliation has not contributed. The aim of the study is to analyze the canonical process of Louis IX and political influences which influenced him, thus the period 1270-1297. The thesis is based on the canonization documents and relies on relevant sources and literature. The Figure of Saint Procopius in Historiographical and Hagiographical Texts of the 16th and 17th Century

The diploma thesis The Figure of Saint Procopius in Historiographical and Hagiographical Texts of the 16th and 17th Century observes, how the earthly life and the posthumous effect of the saint are narrated in early modern historiographical and hagiographical literary relics. The thesis is also dedicated to miracles, which happened because of the intercession of Saint Procopius in the middle ages, and the fortune of the Slavonic monastic community of Sázava until the year 1097. It focuses on the changes, which Saint Procopius's theme has undergone in particular early modern works. It considers medieval legends of Saint Procopius, too. As a supplement to the thesis there is also a list of motifs connected with Saint Procopius, which are mentioned in early modern historiographical and hagiographical texts.
