Representation of music mainstream and alternative in reciprocal media
Morochovičová, Eliška ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Šmejkalová, Jiřina (referee)
This thesis examines the reflection of alternative music in the mainstream media and the reflection of mainstream music in the alternative media. The traditional dichotomous division of popular culture and music proposed mainly by academic fields of cultural and popular music studies provides a theoretical basis for the research. The practical part then analyses selected media content and attempts to verify the validity of these propositions in the context of contemporary music and media studies. The selected sample is composed of music articles derived from six Czech media (three of them mainstream and three alternative). The analysis itself focuses primarily on external characteristics which the author recognises from the specific references in the texts and which reflect the position of mentioned artists in the music industry, and the points of view expressed by journalists in their texts. This thesis thus aims to provide an overview of how Czech media reflect on these two allegedly oppositional contexts and deduces whether the dichotomous perception of mainstream and alternative is still relevant in contemporary music and media.
Teaching Cultural Studies of English-speaking Countries at Grammar Schools in the Czech Republic in 21st century
Kovářová, Jana ; Vít, Radek (advisor) ; Dvořák, Bohuslav (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on cultural studies as subject matter. Their roles are examined in teaching methods, in approaches to teaching by experts and in FEP SGE. It was found out from a questionnaire survey aimed at English teachers how and to what extent cultural studies are taught in English lessons at grammar schools. A content analysis of the three most used English student's books showed that cultural studies are included in them and they correspond to the requirements of FEP SGE; however, they do not include all of the topics and even some English-speaking countries rarely appear in them as well. The last part presents a lesson plan of cultural studies aimed at grammar schools. The country that was chosen for the lesson plan was Australia as it almost did not appear in the student's books. The analysis of each textbook is its assessment and the recommendation for teachers. In conclusion, I summarize all discovered knowledge regarding area studies in Czech language textbooks for...

This concern, however, have transformed over the years and the development of individual disciplines, especially in the 20th century, where the phenomenon of culture has become one of the main indicators of social coexistence. It notes the rise of critical theory, which arose mainly in the context of the so-called "cultural turn", starting in the postwar period. It records the development of social theory as a discipline combining several approaches, grounded in a larger frame of reference, the main aim is to highlight the difference between social science typical for modernity and more or less postmodern authors, which we nowadays consider the leading scientists and philosophers of the 20th century. This report covers the Frankfurt School of T. Adorno,...
