Book World Prague - 25 Years of the International Book and Literary Festival in the Context of the Sociocultural Changes in the Czech Book Trade

(in English) This diploma thesis focuses on the Book World Prague - International Book Fair and Literary Festival - in the context of the transformation of the Czech book market after 1989. Particularly, it aims to examine the role the Book World Prague played in rehabilitation of the Czech book market as for re-implementation of basic market mechanisms in book production and distribution. Individual chapters cover the following topics: characterization and typology of modern book fairs, the history of the Czech book market from 1948 the present day, the history of the origin of trade fairs, the specific history and developments of book fairs, and the milestones in the history of the Book World Prague. Central to the research are data collected by the author by interviewing ten professionals working in various fields of the book industry. The transcribed interviews served two major purposes: firstly, they were used as the primary source enabling the author to answer the research question. Secondly, they created a primary source material relating the history of the Book World Prague.

The Status and Social Prestige of the Library Profession in Contemporary Information Society (Research in Smaller Local Libraries)

The bachelor's thesis deals with the prestige of the librarian profession in today's information society. The theoretical part analyses the current information society and its changes over time, characterizes the librarian profession in connection with the changing role of public libraries and deals with the issue of prestige both of the librarian profession and the professions in general. The thesis introduces the social problem, which is the underestimation of the librarian profession. Based on this problem, the research part of the thesis aims to evaluate the current social prestige of library staff from smaller local libraries in the context of the changing social role of public libraries. The research within the research part of the work took part during the years 2019/2020 in the Czech Republic, in the form of a mixed research combining qualitative and quantitative forms of research. The conclusion of the bachelor's thesis aims to analyse and summarize the results of this research. Censorship of independent music in printed media during the normalisation period

This bachelor thesis deals with the censorship of independent music in print media during the normalization period. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part.The first theoretical part is devoted to the censorship and political situation in Czechoslovakia in so colled the normalization period. The thesis approaches the important printed media that influenced the musical scene in Czechoslovakia. Respondents selected for interview are presented in the practical part. The thesis`s goal is to analyze state power impact on publishers in Czechoslovakia in years 1948-1968. First the thesis describes, how political changes in 1948 affected Czech publishers in general. Then thesis follows the development of censorship and its influence on book production until 1968. Special attention will be paid to the history and production of State Children`s Publishing House/Státní nakladatelství dětské knihy (SNDK). It analyzes, how state power influenced children books in the period.
Changes in Children's Reading and Everyday Life during the Period of So-called Normalization

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of children's reading, children's readingculture and everyday life in the period of so called normalization. In the theoretical part there are mentioned factors which influenced the reading of children. Attention is paid to those that were specific for the time.The work focuses on the ways of reading development, significant influences on the formation of the personality of a child reader, reading habits anddaily rituals of children during the so-called normalization. The aim of the research part is to extend the knowledge of reading children in this period.In the form of semi-structured interviews, the formsof reading support at the given time, the influence of the political system on this area, school and extracurricular activities prepared by the socialist society and their influence on children's reading were examined. Involving Children from Children's Homes in the Life of Public Libraries

This thesis deals with two different institutions - a library and a children's home. The theoretical part describes the activities of the public library and its perception in society. The part related to the children's home briefly summarizes institutional care, the process of preparing children to leave the facility and the possible associated problems. The last part describes the cooperation of these institutions. In the practical part, qualitative research is carried out in the form of semi-structured interviews with respondents from library and children's house. According to analysis of these interviews, a project is proposed to integrate children from a children's home into the daily life of the community. Project Bookstart: the potential for further development in the Czech Republic

This diploma thesis deals with the international project Bookstart and its potential for further development in the Czech Republic. The first part is devoted to terminology and definitions of pre-reading literacy, reading literacy and functional literacy. In addition, selected Czech and foreign projects promoting reading literacy are presented. At the end of the theoretical part of the thesis, attention is paid to the introduction of the project Bookstart, the experience with its course abroad, and mapping the pilot year of the project in the Czech Republic. The practical part of the thesis presents qualitative research in the form of two semi-structured interviews, and quantitative research conducted using an online questionnaire. Assumptions and context of burning books in today's Russia and in Russian-speaking communities in eastern Ukraine

The subject of this thesis is to describe and explain the phenomenon of burning books in contemporary Russia, possibly in the territory annexed by Crimea and East Ukraine. The thesis deals with events in the last 15 years, during which several cases of book burning were identified. The fundamental procedure of the thesis is a thorough verification of these events and their introduction into the socio-political context of contemporary Russia. The aim will be to address aspects of social and political circumstances that can encourage or support these trends.
Self-publishing Of Electronic Literature

This dissertation thesis deals with electronic self-publishing of literary fiction, i.e. its publishing by the authors themselves, without involving publishers. Support from big technology companies led to unprecedented growth of this type of publishing in the 2010s and electronic self-publishing has in some countries become one of the standard ways of publishing. In spite of its expansion, electronic self-publishing is affected by many problems. The most prominent one is comparatively lower quality of many independently published e- books, mainly caused by limited knowledge of the publishing process from the side of the authors, many of which are not proper acquainted with publishing practices. The activities that should an independent author perform during the publishing process are the same as those performed by a publisher. Due to complicated character of some of these activities, many independent authors outsource them to other parties, or do not perform them at all. In the Czech Republic, electronic self-publishing is relatively undeveloped. It is true that there has probably been hundreds or thousands e-books published independently and that the number of downloads of these books is in hundreds of thousands copies.
