Early Books in the Library of Arne Laurin (1889-1945)
Panenková, Josefina ; Šípek, Richard (advisor) ; Šmejkalová, Jiřina (referee)
Until his emigration from Czechoslovakia in 1939, the journalist and editor-in-chief of the daily Prager Presse, Arne Laurin (1889-1945), devoted almost his entire life to book collecting. He is most famous for his collection of journalistic literature which, after the vicissitudes of war and Laurin's death, became part of the library of the present-day Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University. In its time, the journalistic library earned great renown, among other things, thanks to the seven printed catalogues that Laurin published in 1931-1937 as bibliophile prints. In addition to Bohemian books, the library as a whole, and especially its historical collection of prints up to 1860, contains mostly foreign literature of German, French, English, Swedish, Dutch, Swiss, Polish, Hungarian and other print provenience. The thesis focuses on the historical items in which it traces provenience characteristics from the period of Laurin's ownership as well as earlier ones. It also discusses major library issues such as acquisitions, cataloguing, library creation and library accessibility, and last but not least, it traces the fate of the collection after Laurin's emigration up to the present day. In terms of book collecting, it places Laurin's personality in a broader context.

The Master's thesis is focused on the Slovakian TV show Nákupné maniačky and its' audience. The purpose of the thesis is to reveal the motivations leading to watching this show and to explore, whether the viewers perceive the show as a fashion show which allows them to draw inspiration, or rather as a reality show that should entertain them. The theoretical part introduces the concepts as audience, uses and gratifications and reality show genre. The final analysis of the acquired data is based on these terms but it aims to invent a new hypothesis. The second part is devoted to the research that is based on a qualitative method of a grounded theory. Required data was collected by the semi-structured interviews with viewers divided into two age categories. The result of categorizing data indicates that for all viewers the main motivation for watching the show is to have fun. Participants reported enjoying the program because of its' humour, while fashion plays an irrelevant role. The findings also show that participants are aware of interventions of production and they explained manipulating competitors as a strategy of the broadcasters to entertain audience and attract more viewers. This assumption was confirmed by an informant interview with one of the creators of the show.
