Defence Policy of Independent Scotland: Role of International Norms and Legitimity in the Process of Proposal Formation
Kafka, Hugo ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kofroň, Jan (referee)
My bachelor's thesis "Defence Policy of Independent Scotland: Role of International Norms and Legitimity in the Process of Proposal Formation" deals with the genesis of proposals for defence policy of an independent Scotland, which served the Scots as a basis for their vote in the referendum "Should Scotland be an independent country?" I will try to explain the effect of the norms which exist in three communities (NATO, United Kingdom and the Nordic countries) on the defence policy of an emerging state I will be using theories of institutionalism and social constructivism. Then I'd like to show how these models were used rhetorically in the pre- referendum political discourse. While advocates of independence are aiming at distinguishing Scotland from the United Kingdom, Scotland identifies itself with the Nordic countries and their orientation on a fair society and welfare state and responsible environmental and foreign policy to some extent (Denmark and Norway in particular) and also in the area of defence policy are their positions regarded as a possible way for an independent Scotland to take. They are used as a possible alternative to British positions and also as means of legitimizing seemingly controversial proposals in the debate preceding the referendum. The shift in the british government approach towards Northern Ireland contributed to settle the situation as well. Nevertheless, the process of creating stable political representation and functional legislative and executive bodies lasted almost a decade since signing GFA. The transformation of society will take even longer.

Bachelor thesis Common transport policy: the Reforms of European Railways focuses on reforms of the railways that European Community has introduced since its foundation. The thesis is devoted particularly to the development during last two decades. The text analyses the causes of decline in volume of the railway transport and its structural difficulties. The European Community did not cover the Common transport policy effectively at that time, thus member states had to solve the problems their own way. Therefore, firstly national models of the reforms are introduced. These models were the pattern for the new coming European reforms. The crucial moments, which had formed the Common Transport Policy, are emphasized. The European legislative is analyzed in the thesis. The primary aims of Common Transport Policy have been: formation of the internal market, revitalizing and liberalization of railways and harmonization of technical standards. Vrubel, Jan ; Weiss, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (referee)
The thesis deals with the theme of counter-terrorism legislation in two West European countries, namely in the United Kingdom and in Spain. Specifically I focus on the topic of detention measures (particularly on the specifics of the means of detention of suspects of terrorism) and on the attempts of their toughening in both of the states named above. On the present issue I apply the theory of securitization, through which I examine the debate on toughening the detention measures, which occurred in both of these countries. The text of the thesis comprises of two long historical chapters and a comparative final one. The first two chapters deal with the complicated development of terrorist threats and counter-terrorist reaction with a special focus on detention measures. The main goal is to introduce the extensive matter of counter-terrorist legislation and to integrate the principal topic in a broader context. The final chapter consists of several shorter parts, which allow the comparison of distinct attitudes of both states. After 9/11 both the United Kingdom and Spain chose different strategies how to deal with the threat of terrorism legislatively and how to toughen the measures examined. The main research question is how the securitization of terrorism in the United Kingdom and in Spain differed...

The conception of reconstruction of Yugoslavia after WW II
Šmejc, Martin ; Tejchman, Miroslav (advisor) ; Šesták, Miroslav (referee)
Martin Šmejc Abstract: "Conception of reconstruction of Yugoslavia after WW II." The topic "Conception of reconstruction of Yugoslavia after WW II." covers three different phenomena. The most important factor, that determined the development of Yugoslavia during the WW II., was the coming to power of the communist Partisans led by Josip Broz Tito. Their vision of Yugoslavia's reconstruction after the war was defined during the second session of the AVNOJ in Bosnian town Jajce in November 1943. How should according to those visions reconstructed Yugoslavia look like is one of the research questions this thesis is going to answer. The second phenomenon touches upon the conceptions of Yugoslavia's reconstruction by the royal Yugoslav governments in exile. Their project was quite as important as of the Partisans. Their importance resides in the fact that until March 1945, when a united government of Royalists and Partisans based on Tito-Šubašić agreement was created, the government in exile were considered as the only legitimate representatives of Yugoslavia. The third analyzed phenomenon is the impact of the three Allied powers on the situation of Yugoslavia until 1948. The third question posed in this analysis will determine the scope of influence of the USA, UK and USSR on the development of Yugoslavia -...

Polish immigrants in the United Kindom after 2004
Prouzová, Marie ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Klípa, Ondřej (referee)
Bachelor dissertation "Polish Immigrants in the United Kingdom after 2004" deals with one of the most important current migration flows within the European Union and its effects. The time limit of this dissertation is from the EU enlargement of 2004 to 2010, when the Labour government of that era lost the UK general election. The number of Polish immigrants who came after the enlargement of 2004 increased the existing Polish diaspora several times over. Nationals of newly accessed countries were allowed to work in Britain (in contrast to most major countries) without any additional work permits. That was one of the reasons why many more immigrants came into this country compared to predictions. The dissertation deals with types of employment of Polish immigrants in the UK labour market and whether these immigrants have had a positive or negative impact on British economy. It examines the social context of this migration including the socio-demographic profile of the immigrants. Further it looks at perception of this migration flow by the British population and the integration of Poles within British society.
