A memed Revolution?: Content analysis on how Twitter users used memes as a means for political expressions of dissent during the 11J protests in Cuba
León Carpio, Luis Orlando ; Turková, Kateřina (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
The present thesis addresses Twitter memes as a means for political expressions of dissent during the protests that took place in Cuba on the 11 of July 2021. It focuses on the nuances in the discourses that memes conveyed regarding the 11J protests and the COVID-19 crisis and it is aimed to the nature of the messages to understand their main features and stance and make inferences about the motivation behind the act of posting. In doing so, content analysis with a mixed approach - quantitative and qualitative, stressing the latter - was applied to the 111 memes found in a time frame consisting of one week, from 8 to 15 July 2021. The analysis permitted us to conclude that memes carried the main and simplified opinions of Cubans, made references to the political and sanitary crises, targeted politicians and their supporters as the main forms of dissent. Politically, memes helped netizens to criticize the Government, and the political and ideological system, among other things, mainly through humor; although serious memes were also present. Memes, primarily statics and recognized as a nucleus content, received between 300 to 1000 likes, and were produced mainly by common users. Surprisingly, most of them were from outside Cuba.

The Bay of Pigs and its influence on U.S.-Cuba relations
Jaroš, Milan ; Pondělíček, Jiří (advisor) ; Perutka, Lukáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the Bay of Pigs invasion which had been an important part of the U.S.-Cuba relations in the 1960s. The period between the Cuban revolution and the Cuban missile crisis was marked by rapid deterioration of those relations. The thesis is set exactly in this time frame. The invasion was the outcome of the previous deterioration and Castro's victory became the reason for further escalation of the hostilities between the United States and Cuba. This thesis answers the question what decision-making process led to the actual execution of the invasion, what mistakes caused the invasion to fail, who is to blame for this outcome and what consequences did the American failure have on further evolution of the U.S.-Cuba relations. It analyses steps of the planning process and the influence of all the interested parties on this process. It reaches conclusion that the aggressive approach was implemented because of cold war circumstances and the communist threat, the American fear of losing their influence in the western hemisphere and personal ambitions of involved participants. The responsibility for the failure cannot be assigned to just Kennedy's decision making, the CIA's planning or poorly organized Cuban opposition because the fiasco resulted from all these things together....
Czechoslovak - Venezuelan Relations in the years 1945 - 1968
Maternová, Simona ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Binková, Simona (referee)
This work is an analysis of a topic that until now has been practically no research, the relations of Czechoslovakia and Venezuela in the years 1945 - 1968, while this work focuses attention on diplomatic and economic relations, it also considers the influence of domestic politics in these countries, explaining the context of these international relations, specifically of the United States, Soviet union and Cuba. The thesis is primarily based on material from the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Relations of the Czech Republic and also the National Archive of the Czech Republic. Diplomatic relations between these countries were established in 1929, after the Munich Agreement of 1938, the embassy of Czechoslovakia in Caracas was closed. After World War II. economic relations were re-established. This was really important because the commercial interest of Czechoslovakia helped to establish the diplomatic relations. Diplomatic relations were discontinued by Venezuela in 1952 during the dictatorship of general Marcus Pérez Jiménez. When the dictator was overthrown in 1958, diplomatic relations were gradually re-established, once more through economic relations and finally established in 1968. The development of diplomatic relations were affected by several factors. The first one was domestic...
The American Foreign Policy towards Cuba between 1959 and 1963: Causes, Manifestations and Consequences
Chocholová, Anna ; Anděl, Petr (advisor) ; Mikulík, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the American foreign policy towards Cuba in the period between the Cuban Revolution and the death of the U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. It aims to answer the question why did the United States choose an aggressive policy towards the new Cuban regime, what were the results of their strategy, whether a more accommodating attitude would have potentially represented a better solution, and whether considering the circumstances the U.S. could have adopted such an attitude. It analyzes individual events and aspects of this period, led by the Bay of Pigs invasion, in order to find out how much influence did the United States have on Fidel Castro's turn to Communism and the Soviet Union, and whether they were partly responsible for triggering the Cuban missile crisis. The author comes to the conclusion that the American foreign policy towards Cuba between 1959 and 1963 was ill-chosen, because it was not only unable to obtain its main goal of overthrowing Fidel Castro, but also forced the Cuban regime to radicalise and closely cooperate with the Soviet Union. At the same time, she argues that the enforcement and implementation of a more accommodating policy, which probably would have in the end benefited both countries, represented a very difficult task for the U.S....
The role of American media on Spanish-American conflict in 1898
Honsová, Eliška ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Šafařík, Petr (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of American media on the decision to intervene in Cuba in 1898. The aim is to find out the reasons for the American intervention in Cuba and the role of American media, especially tabloids, in this decision making. The paper analyzes and justifies the factors that influenced the decision of President William McKinley. The first part describes the change of American media at the end of nineteeth century and explains the concept of yellow journalism that links to tabloids. The second part deals with events and political decisions before American intervention and ends with a brief description of the conflict. The last part discusses the role of tabloids in the context of the conflict. There are some arguments that focus specifically on the impact of reports on the American public and the penetration into politics. It has been found that the influence of American tabloids at that time is overestimated and was not the main reason for the US intervention on the island.
