Standard Czech Morphology in TV Show

The aim of the diploma thesis was to find out to what extent there is a violation of the standard of writing in two specific interview programs, namely the XTalk and Interview ČT24. Both shows have similar footage (around 22-28 minutes), essentially the same dialogical composition (the host asks questions and the guest answers), but the personality of the host is different. The hosts of both shows are professionals in their field, so non-standard phenomena occur only sporadically (often in more emotionally loaded situations), but their moderation style, which creates a different atmosphere in the studio in both shows, may leads to more frequent violations of the standard norm of the Czech language in XTalk. Of course, the selection of guests also played a role, in which we noticed the frequency of occurrence of non-standard variants, the influence of the communication role, selected sociolinguistic factors and the host. The obtained data was compared with two years older research of dialogical texts of radio journalism by two corpus sources of commonly spoken Czech. The research sample consisted of a total of thirty interviews from 2018-2021. Standard and non-standard language in printed media communication and its impact on discussions about standard language

The present Master's thesis analyses language means in printed media with a particular focus on national daily newspapers from the second trimester of 1993. That year, there was an important linguistic conference on standardised Czech and language culture. The analysis examines especially language means that deviate from the standardised norm of the language. The theoretical part discusses key concepts, such as norm and codification or national language and its varieties. The understanding of these terms is critical for the analytical part of the thesis where language means used in printed media are being analysed using quantitative content analysis. The aim of this analysis is to describe their motivation of use and function. The results are then compared with the proceedings of the 1993 conference on standardised Czech and language culture held in Olomouc. The thesis provides a clear view on how the occurrence of non-standardised language means in media influences academic discussion on standardised Czech.

Tanslation and stylistic analysis of five chapters of the novel Swimming by Nicola Keegan

This BA thesis consists of two parts. The first comprises my translation of five chapters of Nicola Keegan's novel debut Swimming. The second part, analytical one, contains two sections. One deals with the choice and description of the target language register of this translation and the other one with the stylistic analysis of the translation and the justification of the vocabulary used. The analytical part is based largely on the translational theories of Dagmar Knittlová and especially Jiří Levý.

Comparison of the Polish translation of the novel "Konec punku v Helsinkách" with the original Czech version

ŠEMBEROVÁ, DARIA. Comparison of the Polish translation of the novel "Konec punku v Helsinkách" with the original Czech version. Praha: Charles University. Faculty of Arts, 2015. The thesis deals with the issue of translatability of colloquial Czech elements and lexical Germanisms into the Polish language using the comparison of the novel Konec punku v Helsinkách by Jaroslav Rudiš and its Polish translation. The theoretical part briefly discusses the literary work of Jaroslav Rudiš, stratification of Czech and Polish national language, colloquial Czech and its use in literature and literary translation, lexical Germanisms in Czech as well as basic issues of translation of literary works. The practical part of the thesis deals with a critical analysis of the Polish translation of the novel by Jaroslav Rudiš regarding the mentioned aspects. Code switching and code mixing in DVTV - online channel interviews

The aim of this thesis is to find out to what extent DVTV Internet TV speakers adhere to Literary Czech in each interview they perform and under which circumstances they do not. We also wanted to contribute to the answers to the question, whether it is appropriate to think about the transition from the current concept of Literary Czech to Standard Czech. During the interview analysis, we monitored the rate of occurrence of the non-standard elements, the influence of the speaker's role in the interview, and selected sociolinguistic factors which have influence on the choice of language code. We compared the results with the research of other journalistic interviews and with the corpus data from the Common Czech. The examined material consisted of 30 interviews from January to February 2016. We found out that some of the interviewed people tended to use Literary Czech, some were speaking non-standard Czech and there were also people whose speech was in terms of the occurrence of Literary and non-standard elements rather mixed. Nevertheless, in general, the character of the texts was rather literary. Lenka Mundevová Translation of Colloquial Language Devices in Fiction: A Century of Maupassant's Ivrogne in Czech Translation Abstract The dissertation compares the stylization of the dialogues in the French original of Maupassant's short story Ivrogne (The Drunkard), written in 1884, with five Czech translations published between 1902 and 1997. The comparative analysis is focused on the devices of colloquial language, including dialect, which appear frequently in the dialogues of the story and prove to be extraordinarily useful when interpreting Maupassant's text. The analysis of the excerpted material is preceded by the description of the basic characteristics of colloquial French and Czech, followed by the description of their stratifications. The mutual relation of the colloquial language varieties is an important prerequisite for the evaluation of the translations of colloquial language devices and their appropriateness in the individual Czech versions of Ivrogne. The paper also deals with the development of Czech aesthetic translation standards and their relation to the standard of local fiction, outlining the important tendencies of Czech fiction translation applied when colloquial devices were conveyed from French to Czech during the specified timeframe.
