Profiling a State? Combining the Methods of Micro-Level Profiling with the Scope of Macro-Level Strategic Analysis
von Werdt, Benjamin Max David ; Peacock, Timothy (advisor) ; Rosa, Paolo (referee)
This dissertation presents a new method of strategic analysis - the Profiling Cycle. It proposes to combine micro-level profiling methods as used in criminal profiling, behavioral psychology, and sociology, with macro-level methods used for strategic analysis, including neoclassical realism and a newly developed comparative strategy. The Theory of the Big 5 was chosen to represent behavioral psychology, and Coleman's Boat was used for sociology. Key elements from these prevailing theories and methods were borrowed and applied on the level of an entire state. The dissertation explains the Profiling Cycle step-by-step, thereby allowing anyone wishing to use this new method to do so. For illustration, it applies the first step of the Profiling Cycle to the Russian Federation as a case study. The Profiling Cycle's ability to accurately predict future behavior can only be tested in the medium to long term. This dissertation acts as a proof-of-concept. It describes how a functionally complete profile can be created with the help of behavioral psychology, and how an analyst might use this profile to set up possible medium to long term scenarios. Keywords: Strategic Analysis, Theory of the Big 5, Coleman's Boat, Criminal Profiling, Russia, New method, Profiling Cycle

The Vrbetice case and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in selected foreign press
Mazúchová, Sára ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
The subject of the thesis is the media coverage of the Vrbetice case and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline dispute in 2021 by British and American newspapers. In the content I look for manifestations of the so-called new cold war frame. The theoretical part of the thesis begins with the concept of framing, continues with the birth and characteristics of the cold war in the media and ends with a description of the events of interest: the Vrbetice case and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline dispute. The analytical part consists of a qualitative textual analysis in the spirit of grounded theory and a quantitative content analysis, which is partly based on the initial qualitative research. The research observes both strong and weak manifestations of the new cold war frame. The strong aspects include the construction of a world dichotomy and the emphasis on the role of the United States as the main actor of the media content. On the other hand, the occurrence of specific cold war designations, historical analogies, direct use of the phrase "cold war" and condemning generalisations towards Russia were marginal in the articles. Finally, the thesis concludes that the new cold war frame does not dominate media coverage of the two events, but only uses some of its aspects.

Remembering together: Russian memory diplomacy as a soft power tool towards France
Bobbi, Emylie Aurore ; Kolenovská, Daniela (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Incorported in Russia's public diplomacy arsenal towards France is memory diplomacy, according to which Russian authorities seek to integrate their own historical narratives with those of France and to export commemorative practices there. This often overlooked diplomacy type is one of the most covert soft power tools. This thesis examines how has Russia utilized memory diplomacy as a soft power towards France from 2000 to 2019. It argues that Russia has deliberately omited to promote its past role, whether direct or indirect, when local interpretations of a shared event in France are too fragmented. In more consensual conditions and particularly regarding the Second World War, Russia's memory diplomacy has been versatile in its methods, using both traditional and new public diplomacy tools. With soft power as a goal, the Russian authorities have targeted the diverse Russian diaspora communities in France and French politicians through this memory policy to have them relay the Kremlin's political position.
Novorossiya: comparison of its perception in Czech and Russian environment from 2013 through 2016
Švarc, David ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Miessler, Jan (referee)
This Bachelor thesis concerns itself with the internationally unrecognized confederation known as Novorossiya. This political entity emerged between 2014 and 2015 during the Ukrainian crisis. The ultimate goal of this work is to map out how the emergence of said state was reflected by four Czech and four Russian media platforms. The research itself is preceded by a chapter dedicated to the historical context of the geographical region. The content of this chapter includes important geopolitical and historical events that preceded the rise of the confederation which ventures back to the rule of Catherine II. up to the eventual Ukrainian Crisis. The parameters of the media inquiries made regarding the crisis are closely examined and include a year of research around said crisis in both directions (2013 & 2016). This is done in the hope to provide a wide enough scope of time and information to be able to clearly state if and when the idea of Novorossiya was present in any form and in what measures was it present. The research done is both quantitative and qualitative terms in order to have sufficient data to reach a conclusion.
