Popularization of science in Czech audiovisual media with focus on astronautics
Vopršal, Lukáš ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Halada, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the topic of processing and popularization of science, namely the field of cosmonautics within the context of the Czech audiovisual media. The first aim of the thesis is to critically analyze the content of selected episodes broadcasted on a science-popular program within the course of the years of 2021-2022. The second aim is to evaluate the use of popularization elements within the selected episodes through an application of suitable comparative methods. The dissertation is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part of the work, a research was conducted based on Czech and foreign professional literature, with the aim of mapping and describing different approaches to the popularization of science in the media. This has been done by defining the terms science, mass media, scientific journalism and popularization of science within this context. An extensive part of the research is organized in a chronological fashion, encompassing the development and evolution of Czech scientific journalism, with its beginnings in the second half of the 19th century to the present day. This trajectory is analyzed in detail using the examples of two renowned science-popular programs called "Meteor" and "Okna vesmíru dokořán". In the practical part, it has been...
Usage of media platforms at the first school during the covid-19 pandemic
Lelková, Adéla ; Wolák, Radim (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis "Usage of media platforms at the first school during the covid-19 pandemic" focuses on the new technologies in education and their usage in the period of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online platforms were the only way how to educate students for several months and not only in the Czech Republic. Video communication services have thus played a big role in our lives. This thesis aimed to reflect the usage of media platforms at the first school from the perspective of pedagogues teaching in Prague or the Central Bohemian Region. The research period is defined from the widespread closure of schools in the Czech Republic, from March 11th, 2020, until the last restriction on May 24th, 2021. Through semi-structured in-depth interviews with fifteen respondents were compared the functions of individual platforms. Respondents were selected based on predetermined criteria. Emphasis was placed mainly on the advantages and disadvantages of online platforms and the experience of educators. Already in the coding of the respondents' answers, about the second wave of the pandemic, it was found that interviewees did not have the main word when it depend on choosing a platform for connecting with students. The main word on which platform teachers will use was determined by the...

Using automatic snow depth and snow water equivalent data to minimize the error in winter precipitation measurements
Peňáz, Štěpán ; Jeníček, Michal (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The measurement of winter precipitation represents one of the largest uncertainties in the calculation of the hydrological balance. Manual measurement of winter precipitation is time- consuming, costly in terms of personnel and money, and is for this reason not often carried out. The measurement of winter precipitation using a heated rain gauge is in turn affected by wind and partly by the increased evaporation caused by heating. Therefore, automatic snow depth measurement is increasingly used and is becoming more affordable over time. This paper deals with the analysis of automatically measured data from a heated rain gauge, from ultrasonic or laser sensors for snow depth measurements, and from sensors for snow water equivalent measurements in order to find the dependence of new snow density on air temperature and on air humidity. Subsequently, a multiple linear regression equation was derived to calculate the density of new snow, which, together with the new snow accretion, was used to calculate snowfall totals. In addition, alternative winter precipitation was calculated and measured by sensors to calculate the snow water value as well as reference winter precipitation measured by a rain gauge from a manned station. The accuracy of these three precipitation alternatives was assessed using the...

Psychological aspects of media use and their effects on emotions Mgr. et Mgr. Mojmír Sedláček Abstract The dimensions of new media, including news websites and social networks, are still not sufficiently explored. The aim of this dissertation was to map the effect of media content on the emotional experience of an individual, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Overview of literature was based on the findings on the impact of media content and focused on the changes in the media environment in the 21st century and cognitivist approaches to emotions with an emphasis on emotion regulation strategies. These, together with changes in emotional experience, were monitored in a quantitative study, during which 166 respondents were shown a stream of six television news reports. In the qualitative part, 14 respondents participated in semi-structured interviews focused on various approaches to the consumption of media content. The results of both studies led to several conclusions: The news content had a negative effect on the experiences of individuals who dealt with subsequent emotions in accordance with their preferred emotion regulation strategies. More frequent use of adaptive regulatory strategies has proven to be effective in mitigating the negative impacts of media coverage. Despite the declared...

Do women need to be rescued - the journey towards female heroes
Krulichová, Jana ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
This thesis aims to answer how the public perceives and interprets the male gaze theory in the popular culture. Referring to Star Wars, it analyses whether and how the audience perceives the dominant male optic and how it affects an interpretation of the movies. From the theoretical concepts, feminism is mentioned in detail - specifically its second wave, including gender studies that brought attention to culture construction of femininity and masculinity, which helps to understand sexism. A crucial foundation for the thesis proceeds from feminism - a feminist film critique, namely the male gaze theory that was introduced by Laura Mulvey in 1974. This thesis introduces not only this theory, but also its critics and opposing theories that all together contributed to the transformation of the film industry. Subsequently, the developments in American society in the second half of the 20th century that have influenced the changes in pop culture is briefly discussed. Lastly, the science fiction genre and the Star Wars story and its universe are summarized. The qualitative research focuses on the audience of the Star Wars saga born in the 1990s. By analysing semi-structured interviews, the research questions are answered and confronted with findings from the semiotic analysis. The main finding of the...
Framing of alcohol in the Czech press and its comparison in the period before and during COVID-19 pandemic
Andresek, Šimon ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on how the topic of alcohol consumption was framed in the Czech press in two subsequent periods: 2018-2019 and 2020-2021. The emphasis is put on comparing the findings from both research periods, both in terms of frames and other variables studied, such as the topic, the source cited, or the relationship between the sex of the protagonists and the narrative(s) present. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses the influence of media content on public sphere, through the description of the phenomenon of agenda-setting. Then the framing itself is presented, both through the perspective of the agenda-setting theory (as a subset of it), but also as a completely autonomous phenomenon. Different perspectives on framing are presented which are then illustrated with several spatiotemporally distinct studies that address the media framing of alcohol use. The analytical part consists of two methodological components - qualitative and quantitative content analysis. First, qualitative content analysis is used in order to find and describe issue-specific frames at the forefront of the generic conflict frame. Subsequently, the presence of the described specific conflict narratives in both research periods is quantified and the findings are compared. The results suggest that alcohol...
