Jankovič, Radovan ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on the media representation of people living with HIV or AIDS in the five most widely read Czech daily newspapers (Blesk, Mladá fronta DNES, Právo, Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny) and their web portals (blesk.cz, idnes.cz, novinky.cz, lidovky.cz, hn.cz). The theoretical framework of the thesis consists of the concepts of media and social construction of reality, sociological concepts of identity, otherness and stigma, and an approach to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in a short historical and media context. The qualitative research method used in the thesis is Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. The research questions direct the research towards identifying the most common narratives in media discourse and assessing how this discursive practice may influence the social groups portrayed, with an individual emphasis on stigmatising or destigmatising them. Answers to these questions are presented in the subsection on the findings of the analysis and their interpretation. This diploma thesis Digital gender gap deals with the issue of the digital divide in connection with one of the aspect that can affect it. The thesis outlines the concept of the digital divide as a problem of modern globalized society and presents the basic theories for understanding the issue. The digital divide is related to several social factors that are outlined in this work, but the main focus is on the gender aspect. Even in the modern world, it is not possible to completely close the gap in this context just yet. Thus, the characteristics of the problem in connection with the gender factor are outlined. Today, rather than the problem of the primary digital divide, it is the problem of unequal skills and the way in which information and communication technologies are used in our society is being talked about. After defining the basic concepts and this phenomenon, the work presents several foreign studies to create a comprehensive overview of the issue and also data from the Český statistický úřad are presented. Social networks as an inspiration source or reason of lower self - confidence - What impact can Instagram have on body image perception
Pařízková, Veronika ; Hodboď, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The issue of the ideal of beauty presented in the media has been a worldwide phenomenon for several decades. After the origin of digital media, interest in researching this issue has expanded even more, and researchers are coming to new insights and conclusions. Body perception and satisfaction are important factors in self-concept. The subject of this diploma thesis, which I dare not call pure autoetnography, but rather qualitative research using my own self-reflection, is to bring a new perspective to the question of the media's effect on the perception of own body image. Through in-depth interviews that describe in detail several experiences with various forms of eating disorders is to think about the impact of Instagram on this topic. The main conclusion of the research is that none of the respondents confirmed Instagram as a trigger of the disease. Respondents call Instagram as coercive and harmful at a time when their psyche is already broken in some way. In that moment, most respondents described this social network as toxic and dangerous. However, despite all the negative experiences that most of them describe in the research, and which I went through as the author by myself, none of the respondents came to the conclusion that she should leave this platform at all.

Do women need to be rescued - the journey towards female heroes
Krulichová, Jana ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
This thesis aims to answer how the public perceives and interprets the male gaze theory in the popular culture. Referring to Star Wars, it analyses whether and how the audience perceives the dominant male optic and how it affects an interpretation of the movies. From the theoretical concepts, feminism is mentioned in detail - specifically its second wave, including gender studies that brought attention to culture construction of femininity and masculinity, which helps to understand sexism. A crucial foundation for the thesis proceeds from feminism - a feminist film critique, namely the male gaze theory that was introduced by Laura Mulvey in 1974. This thesis introduces not only this theory, but also its critics and opposing theories that all together contributed to the transformation of the film industry. Subsequently, the developments in American society in the second half of the 20th century that have influenced the changes in pop culture is briefly discussed. Lastly, the science fiction genre and the Star Wars story and its universe are summarized. The qualitative research focuses on the audience of the Star Wars saga born in the 1990s. By analysing semi-structured interviews, the research questions are answered and confronted with findings from the semiotic analysis. The main finding of the...
