Reprezenta lidí žijící s HIV/AIDS v českých médiích

The diploma thesis focuses on the media representation of people living with HIV or AIDS in the five most widely read Czech daily newspapers (Blesk, Mladá fronta DNES, Právo, Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny) and their web portals (blesk.cz, idnes.cz, novinky.cz, lidovky.cz, hn.cz). The theoretical framework of the thesis consists of the concepts of media and social construction of reality, sociological concepts of identity, otherness and stigma, and an approach to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in a short historical and media context. The qualitative research method used in the thesis is Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. The research questions direct the research towards identifying the most common narratives in media discourse and assessing how this discursive practice may influence the social groups portrayed, with an individual emphasis on stigmatising or destigmatising them. Answers to these questions are presented in the subsection on the findings of the analysis and their interpretation. The conclusion of the thesis briefly summarizes the main findings and offers a suggestion for further research in this area.
