Kamionková, Hana ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)

A new beginning: radio free europe/radio liberty moving to Prague
Voleská, Dita ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
The presented text is concerned with the development of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) in the period from the late 1980s to mid-1990s. The main aspiration of this Diploma Thesis is the introduction of these specific radio projects in a new era with new missions. RFE/RL gained great popularity during the Cold War period as they were powerful tools in the fight against communist regimes in Europe and the Soviet Union. However, with the fall of Iron Curtain, it was generally anticipated that their tasks were complete. Both Services had to fight against these general assumptions and prove that their mission had yet more functions. Thus, they focused on promoting ideas and principles of democratic and liberal societies. This type of educational broadcasting proved to be very much needed in the post-communist countries which sought to implement the norms of the Western world. This paper describes the overall, somewhat complicated story of RFE/RL, its mission and further developments in broadcasting, which were fundamentally influenced by plans for budget cuts and resulted in the relocation of RFE/RL's operations from Munich to Prague. For more thorough understanding of these issues, the paper also draws on broader historical context of RFE/RL's development from the very beginning of its operations in...

Maňák, Vratislav ; Čeňková, Jana (referee) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor)
This thesis deals with the media reflection of the totalitarian past in the Czech press, namely the reflection of the first phase of development of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia (1948-1953). That unleashed Respekt, coming up with information that later gave a famous writer in the 1950 Western Courier of Czech origin.
Contemporary Czech polemic discourse on dontroversy over Milan Kundera
Orel, Ivan ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee) ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor)
My thesis "Contemporary Czech Polemic Discourse Shown on Controversy over Milan Kundera" deals with media debate triggered by an article published in the Respekt magazine. The article claimed that Milan Kundera reported an unknown person dwelling at a student dormitory to the police. The person was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment as a Western intelligence agent. He spent 14 years in prison. The thesis focuses on texts that were published in Czech media from 13 October 2008 to 31 October 2008. Source texts were categorized into three corpuses. Corpus A includes texts that bring information on Milan Kundera - these texts are not explicitly oriented at supporting argumentation either in favour of or against Kundera. Corpus B contains texts defending Kundera. And corpus C analyzes texts that respond critically to corpus B texts. Based on results of such analyses, discourse participants were categorized and their types were defined, assessing phenomena appearing during the discourse and properties of selected texts of the discourse contained in corpuses A, B and C that were subject to qualitative assessment.
