Revitalization of the Regional Language in Provence by the Medium of Calandreta Schools Richard Vacula (Abstract) This thesis focuses on the role of bilingual Calandreta schools in the process of maintenance and revitalisation of the regional language in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, France. It is based on empirical research undertaken in form of questionnaires and directed interviews in the place of two existing Provençal Calandretas, Gap and Orange. A sample of the local population and respondents from the area of the two schools has been included in the research. We have studied linguistic behaviour, attitudes towards regional education, and the picture of the schools and the language in question. The results suggest that the public is inclined towards the essentials of the language being taught, however, less so towards bilingual education. The results also show that the potential of the schools observed lies rather in their pedagogical methods. The strong pressure of French is noticeable even on the grounds of the schools. The use of Occitan in everyday communication situations is then somewhat rare. The regional language is noticeably associated with the school environment and is connected with specific contexts. Bilingualism management in the situation of language shift: Discourses, problems and the landscape of Belarus

Práce se věnuje managementu bilingvismu v situaci jazykového posunu, tj. tomu, jak se jednotlivci a organizace chovají vůči dvojjazyčnosti, jak s ní zacházejí, a to v situaci, kdy společnost přechází od užívání jednoho jazyka k jazyku jinému. Práce se konkrétně zaměřuje na vybrané, dosud méně zkoumané aspekty současné jazykové situace v Bělorusku. Analyzované aspekty zahrnují: 1) geosémiotiku a management jazykového posunu na nápisech ve veřejném prostoru, 2) management jazykových problémů se zaměřením na školství a 3) snahy o obrácený jazykový posun k běloruštině. Pozornost se přitom věnuje korespondencím mezi jazykovým managementem občanů a státních nebo jiných veřejných organizací. Cílem práce je přispět jak k lepšímu poznání jazykové situace v Bělorusku, tak k rozpracování některých sociolingvistických konceptů, jako je zejména jazykový posun a jazykový problém. Práce aplikuje teorii jazykového managementu jako obecný model jazykového posunu a jako instrument k diagnostikaci jazykových problémů. Při aplikaci teorie v uvedených kontextech se ukázalo jako užitečné rozšířit ji o koncept diskurzu a kolektivního jednání, které pomůžou konceptualizovat propojení mezi jednoduchým a organizovaným jazykovým managementem, respektive mezi mikrosociální a makrosociální rovinou. Bilingualism on Social Networks: The Use of Czech, English and other languages among Czech users of Facebook

The main goal of this thesis is to find and describe the evidence of bilingual communication of English language among Czech users of the social network Facebook. A qualitative method of both text document and semi-structured interviews with six active users was used to describe the type of bilingualism which occurs in the social media environment, in what situations and what is the user's motivation behind it. Therefore the main theoretical approaches I focus on are bilingualism and its place in the Czech Republic and the role of the English language in this socio-culture context. Furthermore I study the communication in an online environment: what are the specifications and what role does the CMC (computer-mediated-communication) play in relationship of the language and the user. Finally, I search for previous studies in the field of online bilingualism, social media preferably. The results show not only the Czech users are well situated within the discourse of English as (online) lingua franca, moreover they seem to be very active in self-imposed code-switching into the English language. The data acquired through the interviews helped to identify bilingualism occurs on both levels of code-switching and code-mixing. Additionally, Anglicism's in the Czech language were reported widely.
Comparison of ELT methods used in a bilingual preschool and a language preschool

This bachelor thesis is aimed at comparing ELT methods based on analysis of observed lessons in a bilingual and language preschool, which focus on teaching English. The theoretical part describes eight teaching methods generally used in the teaching process and characterizes their main principles. The explanation of terms method, approach, technique and principle is included in this part as well. The practical part contains description of individual observed lessons and analyses the application of ELT methods put in practice. The outcomes of the study are based on frequency of accurence of the teaching methods. Further, the results of observations in both preschools are subjected to mutual comparison.
Multilingual Compensatory Strategies of Czech Native Speakers in English

The proposed thesis treats the topic of multilingual language acquisition and the occurring language interference. It aims to demonstrate the negative language transfer by the means of the results of a field research. The theoretical part introduces and discusses relevant topics, such as language learning, language processing, bilingualism and multilingualism. Furthermore, it focuses on the character of language transfer itself. In the practical part, two hypotheses are presented, specifically "the interference of the dominant foreign language is considerably higher than the interference of the other language, i.e. L3" and "passive interference reaches a higher degree than the active one". Eventually, the results interpretation is presented and both the hypotheses are verified.
Canadian media: history/genesis and present/contemporaneity

The thesis is focused on key canadian media - print, radio and television, in the individulal chapters I'm trying to describe their development as it is during the formative years and influenced, and what role it plays in today's Canada and which one of them has a privileged position in the country. Before that I was trying to deal with the history of Canada to clarify the roots all Canadian journalism and the media occurred. I also give attention to some selected major Canadian media personalities, whether those from the past and the present, who are in some way involved on what is today Canadian journalism, or the form of it's today. My attention did not miss either: the French-Canadian journalism, which about their form and the place on the map of the Canadian media fought for centuries. Its center is the Canadian province of Quebec. In my work, I also discuss how journalism is taught at several Canadian universities, how much of them offers a learning program and how they teach it. Whether the emphasis is more on theory or more practical. I write also about media education, which has been several years in Canada's history. Last but not least, I tried to map the Czech track in the Canadian media and specifically designate some of expatriate media that readers can find in Canada.
The language issue during the formation and development of independent Ukraine between 1991 and 2001

This master's thesis examines the first decade of independent Ukraine in terms of language policy and political organization. It purports to show the impact that Ukraine's political independence had on the national and language situation in the first years of its existence. The first part of the thesis deals with the demographic, national and political state of affairs at the outset of the examined period, in 1989. The second part provides an analysis of the most important laws and other official documents that were supposed to influence further developments in the language policy. The third part deals with the actual evolution in individual spheres of life, namely education, media, bilingualism, administrative and territorial structure, and demographic changes. The conclusion answers two questions, firstly, "How does the reality differ from the plans in the official documents?", and secondly, "What changes can we notice in the language and territorial issue of Ukraine after the first decade of its independence?"
