Conventional and small modular reactors
Vintr, Lukáš ; Lisá, Hana (referee) ; Milčák, Pavel (advisor)
This thesis deals with nuclear energy. It contains a brief history of the development of this industry and provides insight into the process and control of the fission chain reaction used in nuclear reactors. It also describes conventional reactor types and the current state of their use in the world. It then mentions the research objectives set by the Generation IV International forum. Finally, it defines small modular reactors, describes a number of conceptual designs, and presents an analysis of the current state of their development, together with the possibilities of their use for the production of electricity or process heat.
Civilian Nuclear Energy Adoption in Sub Saharan Africa: A Human Security-Based Thematic Analysis of the Discourse on Nuclear Power Production adoption in Ghana
Mwenda, Lewis Kimathi ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Schlotti, Jivanta (referee) ; Berg, Julie (referee)
[Civilian Nuclear Energy Adoption in Sub Saharan Africa: A Human Security-based Thematic Analysis of the Discourse on Nuclear Power Production adoption in Ghana] ABSTRACT This research paper will explore the different theoretical frameworks gathered from different academic backgrounds that guide and explain the role, function and impact of technological advancement, energy security and nuclear power production. It will note the significance of the 'public sphere' and discourse therein which signifies an energy transition. Further, it will propose a security based theoretical framework as an a priori basis for a thematic analysis of the discourse of nuclear power production adoption in Ghana. It addresses the general question of technological innovation and its relation to society beginning with a traditional view of technological determinism, social determinism and a more complex understanding of socio-energy systems. The paper takes a nod to the complex relational aspects in the technology lifecycle from inception to implementation. It contends that energy transitions therefore require apt participation from all corners of society and ought not to be treated as policy 'black-box, but a process that can be opened up for scrutiny by the public. Moreover, the presentation of these ideas proposes that civilian...
Nuclear Power in the Green Party Agenda before and after the first Phase - Out - Agreement in Germany
Šestáková, Gita ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Mlsna, Petr (referee)
The red - green coalition in German national government agreed in the autumn of 1998 on a phase - out nuclear strategy, a conclusion made after long - term public debate. This thesis works with agenda setting and advocacy coalition theory in order to discover the efficiency of Green party's attempts to realize its vision of nuclear phase - out. This goal of the Greens has remained unchanged since the establishment of the political party; yet the promoting of the concrete aspects was strongly influenced by other actors interested in the energy policy. The position of the Greens in the final agreement process was disadvantaged and the party had to agree on many compromises. After the disaster of Fukushima, German government decided for a quicker nuclear exit. In this perspective, the Greens use their stable anti - nuclear image as a positive aspect for the latest national elections campaign.
Environmental Impact Assessment in the European, Austrian and Czech Legal Regulation
Škrabalová, Kristina ; Damohorský, Milan (advisor) ; Stejskal, Vojtěch (referee)
The process of environmental impact assessment is a control procedure that aims to summarize and evaluate the impact of a project on the environment at the stage of project planning and thus to reduce its potential negative impacts in the future. One of the main ideas of the EIA process is to avoid since the very beginning problems and confrontation which would otherwise appear in the future in connection with the planned project. This principle is particularly important in cases of transboundary assessment where communication between countries and joint consultations on the project in its early stages of planning might prevent potential conflicts and disruption of mutual relations in the future resulting from an already implemented plan. The cornerstone of a transboundary assessment is the understanding that the harmful effects of a specific project do not stop at the borders of one state, but can reach a territory of many other countries, mutual cooperation in this subject is thus with regard to environmental protection necessary. The necessity of such a cooperation on one hand, as well as its pitfalls and difficulties on the other hand, are illustrated in the case of transboundary EIA between the Czech Republic and Austria, that is specifically in the case of the construction of the nuclear power plant...
The Impact of International Sanctions on the Development of Nuclear Program of Iran and the DPRK
Bejbl, Daniel ; Bříza, Vlastislav (advisor) ; Smetana, Michal (referee)
This bachelor thesis refers about the effectivity of international sanctions - economic and other types - which have been imposed on regimes in Iran and the DPRK to force these states to abandon any efforts leading to gaining their own nuclear capabilities. First, this thesis deals with defining the international sanctions on the level of international law and then examining both cases of their imposition, Iran and the DPRK. In addition there is also mentioned the Nuclear Deal with Iran which was negotiated as an complex international tool to control the Iranian nuclear program, to manage the imposed sanctions and conditions for sanctions to be lifted. In conclusion there is an assessment of the effectivity of the examined sanctions and if they reached the goals for which they have been imposed and a examines the reasons why the sanctions were quite effective in case of Iran but rather failed in case of DPRK.
Discourse of Atomausstieg Approval in Germany in 2011
Svobodová, Tereza ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Smetana, Michal (referee)
The main objective of this bachelor thesis (Discourse at the ratification of the conception Atomausstieg-nuclear pahse out in the Federal Republic Germany in 2011) is to answer the research question, which discourse was during the ratification of the concept of the nuclear phase out (Atomausstieg) in the Federal Republic Germany in 2011 after the nuclear accident in Fukushima. The Federal Republic Germany ratified the decision of end the taking out of operation nuclear power plants till the end of 2022 after the nuclear accident in Fukushima. In this bachelor thesis are analyzed parliamentary debates of political parties about the nuclear power plant usage and operation of nuclear power. The methodology that was used is qualitative method discourse analysis. According to the discourse analysis are analyzed plenary protocols from the parliamentary negotiations from the period March - June 2011. As the theoretical framework it was used the securitization theory based on Copenhagen school and the author's Balzacq and Strizel. By the research it has been discovered that there are three discourses in the parliamentary debates - security, economical and environmental. The security discourse is the most significant one.
Characteristics of fan cooling towers
Joska, Jakub ; Milčák, Pavel (referee) ; Pospíšil, Jiří (advisor)
This diploma thesis deals with the problematics of fan cooling towers. The very first part of the text is research, focusing mainly on the theory of cooling and the function of fan cooling towers in general. The following chapter deals with the water resource management of the Dukovany nuclear power plant and the specification of its objects of forced draft cooling towers. The second part describes a computational model created to determine the cooling performance of these towers under the given input conditions. In the following chapters, the results from the computational model are compared with the available data from warranty measurements and with the provided characteristics. The final pages deal with the study of the influence of changes in input parameters on the cooling performance and the research of the behavior of the cooling towers under extreme weather conditions.
