Brůnová, Lada ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
How can movie production companies speak to their potential audience thru movie trailers? Which means do they use and what is the public reception? How does a viewer interpret a movie trailer? What can we learn about viewers from movie trailers? This thesis is offering all the answers to questions mentioned above in two different parts - in the first part the concepts of movie trailers are introduced and explained, the second part analyses the outcomes of a research which studies the affects of movie trailers on potential audience. Collected data through quantitative methods of two uniform groups on the topic of movie trailers were studied by focus groups. This thesis focuses on understanding the approach of viewers on movie trailers and is trying to clarify when the movie trailers can act as a decision maker in order to change the approach and behavior of the audience. Thesis aims to offer a broader overview to the relationship between movie trailers and viewers and propose a guide how to read audiovisual works critically. The intention is to uncover that the scheme between text and context is characterized by complex processes of mediation and interpretation on the level of production, propagation and reception. "Romani Accented Movies": Current Situation of Romani Cinema and Its future Perspective
Dvorská, Františka ; Červenka, Jan (advisor) ; Marková, Taťána (referee)
Summary: "Romani Accented Movies": Current situation of Romani Cinema and Its future Perspective The main theoretical approach that underpins this work is based on the concept of an accented cinema formulated by the Iranian film scholar Hamid Naficy. On the basis of his methodological tools the author examines some elements of the "accented style" as they assert themselves in the Roma cinema, and comes to the conclusion that already on a small sample of ten Romani filmmakers we can see certain components that are more or less common to all featured artists. Foremost there is shared existence in the "interspace", which is moreover in some aspects different from the exile or other diaspora filmmakers' "boundary" existence, given by the specific status of the Roma minority in society. Roma cinema is characterized by autobiographical approach and author's self-inscription into the story. From the production point of view these films are mostly alternative, low-budget or art-house ones. Romani cinema is most often supported by public broadcasters, subsidies from the state, nonprofit organizations or small production companies. Staffs are often formed on friendship or family ties, the filmmakers usually work with the similar team of people, hold multiple positions themselves and also are present at different...
Time in Film. Comparison of the Conception of Jan Mukařovský and Gilles Deleuze
Kadlecová, Vladimíra ; Fišerová, Michaela (advisor) ; Michalovič, Peter (referee)
The topic of my diploma thesis is a comparison of speculation about a film from two perspectives. Firstly, it deals with the approach of Jan Mukařovský, a Czech structuralist, who was one of the first in the Czech context to explore the time concept in a film. Secondly, it considers the approach of Gillese Deleuze, who was accredited with the new view on the time-image in a film, however, much later than Jan Mukařovský. The aim of the paper is to explain the way the approaches of Mukařovský and Deluze relate to other approaches of thinking about time in films, the influence of other concepts of their time that they both theoretically based their views on, as well as specifying the films that became the starting points of exploring the time in films. The method of comparison is divided into three aspects, as three comparison levels.
Portrayal of Native Americans in American Cinema in 1980s and 1990s
Vodňanský, Martin ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Raková, Svatava (referee)
My work deals with the process of displaying of the North American Indian in the American cinematography. It describes the development, transformations and stereotypes in this process from the very beginning until the end of the nineties. In detail it deals with the Indian-thematized filmmaking in the 80s and 90s and it emphasizes, according to the author, the most important Indian movies. The focus point of the study lies in the analysis of two movies Powwow Highway and Smoke Signals, which were created by the Indian production in the late 80s and 90s. The aim of the work is, with the help of the analysis, to answer the question "Were the Indian actors and directors essential for more realistic portrayal of American Indians in American cinematography?" After analyzing the mentioned movies and presenting the arguments to this question, the conclusion is affirmative.

The Screen of Laughter and Remembering: Cinematography and Post-Socialist Memory
Hladík, Radim ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kusá, Zuzana (referee) ; Hanáková, Petra (referee)
THE SCREEN OF LAUGHTER AND REMEMBERING Collective Memory and Representations of State Socialism in Czech Cinematography This dissertation has very little to say about state socialism. Rather, it is a work about the memory of state socialism in the post-socialist Czech Republic, about the ways in which state socialism can be remembered in the present. From the perspective of collective memory, "it is not only the ancien regime that produced revolution, but in some respect the revolution produced the ancient regime, giving it a shape, a sense of closure" (Boym 2001, xvi). And there are indeed many, often conflicted modes of remembering this particular past. Françoise Mayer, for example, has identified several distinct types of remembering the "communism" in Czech society (Mayer, 2009). And her list is by no means exhaustive. At the centre of this treatise is the Czech post-socialist cinema. My dissertation thesis was prompted by the question of how cinematic representations bear on the collective memory of state socialism in the Czech Republic. . In the first chapter, I explore how cinema represents the past in comparison to historiography. In my work, it is evident that Czech cinema does not follow the epistemological criterion of referentiality that binds historians. A more important observation - and one...
