Space as a socially constructed form of oppression: the transformation of an asylum for women with mental handicap in the Usti Region
Růžičková, Kamila ; Kolářová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Ezzeddine, Petra (referee)
In my thesis I deal with the representations of mental handicap in the Czech context. The theoretical base I found in the field of disability studies and its model of disability, which I have enriched with the approaches of poststructuralist authors and also with the Czech authors who see the mental handicap from a different perspective than the "majority society". The representation of mental handicap in the Czech context I show at the example of a home for people with disabilities, specifically for the mentally disabled women, which is located in the Usti Region. This institution is involved in the project called The support of planning the transformation of social services in the Usti Region. In the thesis I deal with the issue how are these planning changes communicated with clients and what connotations are given to the planned change of living space. In the empirici section, I talk through the semi-structured interviews with five woman clients of the institution and ask them about their current life. Then I analyze the types of spaces Theky mentioned. Their questions are completed with an interview with the manager of the institution, who talks about the motives that led to the transformation process. Keywords disability, client, citizenship, human rights, space, gender, social service,...
Roma in the Czech Republic: Adolescence, Identity and Schooling. A Case Study of Three Teenage Girls from Prague
Rajkovic, Ivana ; Káňová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šumníková, Pavlína (referee)
This study focuses on the identities and self-perception of Roma adolescents in the Czech Republic and the educational implications these may have for this particular group of students. In particular it attempts to shed light on how these individuals perceive themselves, their schooling and future adult roles they expect to take on in life. Furthermore, the perceptions and involvement of Roma parents was also examined in an attempt to explore their views on education that they transmit to their children. A theoretical framework was developed based upon the ecological systems theory, theories on the identity development in adolescence, ethnic minority identity as well as the existing literature on the schooling of ethnic minority pupils. A qualitative approach followed by a multiple case study design was taken with semi-structured interviews as the research method. The empirical study was conducted with three female participants from one low-threshold facility for children and youth in Prague. Data was analysed using the phenomenological approach which regards the reality not as a given entity but as socially constructed by individuals according to their everyday experiences. The key findings of the study suggest that Roma children do not have negative identities developed, there are no negative values they...
Comparison of logical and psychological perspectives on the concept of number.
Kuncová, Alexandra ; Punčochář, Vít (advisor) ; Kůrka, Petr (referee)
This paper is divided into three main parts. In the first part, we propose a logical approach to the concept of number based on Frege's Foundations of Arithmetic. Besides the main attempt to define and classify number per se, we also discuss Husserl's struggle with psychologism, Frege's logicism, and the construction of the series of natural numbers. In the second part, we look at a psychological approach to the concept of number through theories and experiments of cogni- tive science. We focus on infants' understanding of numbers and amounts, their counting abilities and later conventional skills. In the third part, we summarise differences as well as similarities of these two approaches. Keywords: cognitive science, concept, Frege, Husserl, identity, logicism, num- ber, one-to-one correspondence, Piaget, psychologism.
