Written Voice: Whitman's Leaves of Grass (1855) and Miller's Tropic of Cancer
Skovajsa, Ondřej ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Bílek, Petr (referee) ; Pokorný, Martin (referee)
The PhD. dissertation Written Voice examines how Walt Whitman and Henry Miller through books, confined textual products of modernity, strive to awaken the reader to a more perceptive and courageous life, provided that the reader is willing to suspend hermeneutics of suspicion and approach Leaves of Grass and Tropic of Cancer with hermeneutics of hunger. This is examined from linguistic, anthropological and theological vantage point of oral theory (M. Jousse, M. Parry, A. Lord, W. Ong, E. Havelock, J. Assmann, D. Abram, C. Geertz, T. Pettitt, J. Nohrnberg, D. Sölle, etc.). This work thus compares Leaves (1855) and Tropic of Cancer examining their paratextual, stylistic features, their genesis, the phenomenology of their I's, their ethos and story across the compositions. By "voluntary" usage of means of oral mnemonics such as parallelism/bilateralism (Jousse) - along with present tense, imitatio Christi and pedagogical usage of obscenity - both authors in their compositions attack the textual modern discourse, the posteriority, nostalgia and confinement of literature, restore the body, and aim for futurality of biblical kinetics. It is the reader's task, then, to hermeneutically resurrect the dead printed words of the compositions into their own "flesh" and action. The third part of the thesis...

Tichá, Soňa ; Holý, Jiří (advisor) ; Vučka, Tomáš (referee)
This work's main concern is the analysis of the transformation of exoticism motives in Konstantin Biebl's S lodí jež dováží čaj a kávu. The interpretations of the text follow the context of the avant-garde exoticism in the era after World War I. The analysis is supported with motives of exoticism in Biebl's works from the 20's, and also with two works of his contemporaries: Jaroslav Seifert's collection of poems Na vlnách TSF and Vítězslav Nezval's Exotická láska. First of all sects are taken in generally, so that the whole theme can be dealt in its width. Subsequently, my work focuses on the topic of Jehovah`s Witnesses in attempt to determine the extent of this society as a sect. Within each chapter it is possible to see the sect in terms of attractiveness, dynamics of group functioning or for example dependence, manipulation and insecurity. In the chapter called Jehovah's Witnesses the overall picture is completed. This religious society is presented based on its historical development, description of the life of Jehovah's Witnesses members and also through its activities in the Czech Republic. The conclusion contains evaluation of this religious organization including general assessment of the importance of sects. Keywords Religionistic, religion, sects, Jehova's Wittnesses, moderni

Stergiopoulou, Eleni ; Himl, Pavel (advisor) ; Power, Martina (referee) ; Erdösi, Péter (referee)
Occidentalism in Russian Travel Literature in the 18th Century: Example of Nikolaj Mihailovič Karamzin Summary The purpose of this research is to explore how the national and cultural identity of Russia was constructed in the eighteenth century through the vehicle of travel writing. At the heart of this research is a close analysis of the travels of the Russian author Nikolaj Karamzin to the Western Europe. Karamzin's Letters of a Russian Traveller is a travelogue in the form of memoir in epistolary arrangement based on his travels through the states of Germany, Switzerland, France and England in 1789-1790. The era and the author chosen are justified by the graveness that the eighteenth century has for the history of the Russian literature. An era of major transformations in all social and cultural aspects of the till-then known Russian lifestyle set the ground for a move towards modernity. By travelling to the Western Europe and displaying the values and rich greatness of some aspects of the cultural, political and social lives, Karamzin proposes a set of alternative national ideals. These ideals would assist the country and the nation to get closer to the standards of the Western traditions and subsequently closer to 'paradise' and the 'perfect' life. As a contextual backup for the analysis of Karamzin's...
