Cajun French: mirror of the past, of the present and of the future
Bednárová, Jana ; Vacula, Richard (advisor) ; Štichauer, Jaroslav (referee)
The thesis seeks to give an overall image concerning the linguistic situation of Cajun French of Louisiana. This regional variant of French is spoken by a minority group of speakers in this state. Given that the paper was created in the Czech academic community where Cajun French is virtually unknown, it tries to spark more interest in this topic. The first chapter presents the theoretical input to the outlined problem and Czech works dealing with Cajun French. The second chapter shows the basic facts about Louisiana, as well as the key events in its history. It examines the creation of Cajun French and characterizes its specific features. It also includes a mention of Cajun French reference books. The third chapter examines the legal status of the French language in Louisiana. Furthermore, the work sheds light on its French language policy, carried out mainly by a state agency called CODOFIL (the abbreviation comes from Council for the Development of French in Louisiana). The thesis later explains what the adherence to Francophonie would mean for this state. This is followed by an account of the relations entertained with Francophonie. The thesis later outlines the current linguistic situation and describes the possibilities of studying French in Louisiana. The presence of French on signage and in...

Šlédrová, Jasňa ; Řezáčová, Vendula (advisor) ; Oravcová, Anna (referee)
The main topic of this work is forming of an ethnic identity in multicultural interaction. The key source of information besides the literature is data acquired by own research work. Studied literature enables the author to discuss the main theoretical approaches and specify the essential terminology. The presented concept is examined owing to the research work. The research is designed as a case study of a specific group: Erasmus students in French Lyon. This group was examined by way of analysis of interviews with some of its members. In quest of achieving reliable data, the research is focused on five nationalities: Bulgarians, Czechs, Germans, Italians and Spanish. The conclusions of this work clarify how the examined individuals construct their ethnic identities but also how they comprehend the term culture. The analytical part of this work concentrates on how they perceive their own culture and how they observe the foreign culture in which they are temporarily staying. In this context ethnic and social dichotomies are discussed as a means of self-identification and self-determination. The work also deals with the idea of imaginary boundaries that individuals build between their group and other groups. The penetrability and movability of these constructed bounds is investigated through...
Trasffered stigma of otherness in ethnically mixed partnerships in the Czech Republic
Weinbergerová, Lenka ; Sokolová, Věra (advisor) ; Jiroutová Kynčlová, Tereza (referee)
My diploma thesis on the basis of intersectionality analyzes the social construction of "otherness" in etnically mixed partnerships and how does it manifests and influences the self- conception of Czech women that are in the mixed relationships. Further, it analyzes how the partners "otherness" affects the position of the women in the society. In my thesis I work with the concept of transmitted stigma, because the etnical otherness is not constructed on the horizontal differences, but contains also classifing and assesing aspects, which may situate the mixed patnerships to the positions of dis/advantage. For my qualitative research I have chosen semi-structured interviews with women, that were born and live in the Czech Republic and are or was in etnically mixed relationship. Key words: mixed partnership, stigma, otherness, etnicity, race, intersectionality

Tuzar, Vojtěch ; Angelovská, Olga (advisor) ; Kohoutek, Jan (referee)
The master thesis deals with public policies in the area of Roma minority inclusion in the modern history of the Czech Republic after 1989. The main objective of the thesis is to identify, by applying the theory of social construction of target populations, the form of state intervention in solviing the exclusion of the Roma minority from society. And then to find out what influence the social construction of the Roma and their political possibilities play here. The research consists in analysing and identifying the different elements of the theory in the following order: 1. Analysis of public policies for Roma integration; 2. Analysis of the social construction of the Roma; 3. Analysis of the political power of Roma. The first step towards achieving the aim of the thesis is to reveal the nature of the policy design of Roma integration. In this step, I will analyse a convolute of public policy documents, which includes international legal conventions, domestic minority laws and strategic documents. In the next step, I will focus on the social image of the Roma, the form of which, according to the social construction theory of target populations, plays an undeniable role in the formulation of public policies and the behaviour of elected officials. The last main effort to fulfil the aim of the thesis...

Puchýřová, Michaela ; Smetáčková, Irena (advisor) ; Bittnerová, Dana (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the idea whether the ethnicity of a child manifests in masculinity and/or femininity. The theoretical part is focused on two main topics - gender and ethnicity. The term "gender identity" is explained as well as its development according to various theories and furthermore the gender socialization (in various environments) and gender schemes. In the theoretical part, the thesis then focuses on the definition of the term "ethnicity", focuses on ethnic identity, socializing into a ethnicity and last but not least, ethnic stereotypes and schemes. The theoretical part is brought to an end with a chapter on gender and ethnicity and their mutual connection. The practical part concentrates on research dealing with quantitative data, however the data is processed with the qualitative approach. The data was collected through drawings of elementary school pupils, then a coding key was created and used for coding of the drawings. All the data acquired is then presented and interpreted. The outcome of this research was finding that kids of various ethnicities percieve the difference between masculinity and feminiity in similar way, there is no significant projection of the ethnicity into the schemes. "Vạn Xuân" - Ten thousand springs: Vietnamese journal in Czech republic
Tungová, Lenka ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Švec, Štefan (referee)
Diploma thesis "Vạn Xuân" - Ten thousand springs: Vietnamese journal in Czech republic deals not only with the magazine itself, but also with the Vietnamese press in Czech Republic in general. It is impossible to study Vietnamese press in Czech Republic without historical knowledge about this community on Czech territory. Hence, in the first part of this paper, the Vietnamese migration is fully explained. The aim of this work is to find out, how magazine Vạn Xuân reflects parallel Words in which it works - in Czech majority and Vietnamese minor. It is also important to know the range of information from Vietnam that the journal brings. Since most of Vietnamese do not speak Czech well and can not obtain information from Czech media, Vietnamese magazines are their primary, sometimes the only information source that they have. Thereby, Vietnamese press in Czech Republic has an important role in shaping knowledge and maybe even opinion of its community. Vietnamese community is quite isolated from Czech society, since it is its natural character. However, by and by, it is still more vivid that without adaptation, the Vietnamese community can not adequately exist. It is necessary for them to be conscious about Czech matters of policy, economy, but also culture. Without this consciousness, they can get...
Social workers and Their Romish Identity Perception in Providing Services to Clients of the Same Ethnic Group
Vlková, Dorota ; Krahulcová, Beáta (advisor) ; Jaluška, Aleš (referee)
The categories of 'ethnicity' or 'Roma' could obscure the whole topic, as they may suggest an idea that the socially excluded are somehow special or unrecognizable. It is therefore very important to use these categories clearly and specifically. That is what I am trying to do in this thesis. The theoretical part is divided into three main parts: the dynamic model of practice, culturally sensitive social work and the chapter entitled Roma. In the first part, the dynamic model, I try to have a look at the practical implementation of social work as described by Karen Healy (from page 10 onwards). I also explore the areas that influence the interactions between the social worker and their client. The dynamic model is focused on professional goals, which are made up of four areas: the institutional context, the needs and expectations of the service users and the community, the professional foundation, and an emerging framework for practice that develops through critical reflection on professional experience. These four elements further interact within the framework of the professional goal. I have also included a subsection where I attempt to define social work and its relationship to social services (p. 19). In the next chapter, I describe the culturally sensitive social work (from p. 25) on which the...
Prohibition of diskrimination, constitutional legal level of protection of the rights of ethnic minorities against discrimination
Solilová, Barbora ; Preuss, Ondřej (advisor) ; Řepa, Karel (referee)
Prohibition of diskrimination, constitutional legal level of protection of the rights of ethnic minorities against discrimination Abstract The thesis deals with the concept of discrimination from a theoretical and practical point of view and focuses closely on the issue of ethnic minorities and racism. To clarify the whole issue, the work is presented by the theoretical inclusion of anti-discrimination law in the legal framework of human rights law in both the Czech Republic and the global framework in the form of international agreements. It deals with ideological sources, including the historical origin of law related to discrimination. It also contains a definition of basic concepts, which are necessary to clarify this complex phenomenon. It thematically defines both the legal regulation of individual protection of the individual and the collective concept of protection against discrimination and the rights of ethnic minorities as a whole. The main part of this work refers about case law in the field of discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity or nationality and all other forms of protection against illegal exclusion or segregation. It emphasizes in law the exceptional instrument of reversing the burden of proof, which makes it easier to prove a potentially discriminated party to a dispute. The thesis...
