The Concept of the "New Woman" in the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938)

The diploma thesis is focused on the concept of the "New Woman" in the first Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938). The "New Woman" is understood as a discursive construct acquiring various meanings. In this work, I reveal wide range of these meanings and identify images of the "New Woman", which indicate what was hidden under this concept. The aim of the thesis is to find an answer to the question of what contents the concept was acquiring at a given time. To achieve this goal, I use critical discourse analysis to analyze materials (books, periodicals) from the era of the first Czechoslovak Republic. I also place the topic of the "New Woman" in the necessary context, which focuses on the legal and social status of women in the first Czechoslovak Republic and the origin of the concept and its elaboration by western authors. The Battle for the Meaning of sexual Harassment: Analysis of Media Reactions to the Conference Legal Aspects of the "Me Too" Campaign

The aim of the thesis is to find out how the frame of sexual harassment is created in the context of a discourse conflict brought about by the conference "Legal Aspects of ‛MeToo' Campaign", which took place in Prague in March 2018. My analytical sample consisted of four op- ed pieces of the protagonists of the conference and five op-ed pieces of the critics of the conference. I chose critical discourse analysis as my analytical tool to find out how each side of the discursive conflict constructs the discourse of sexual harassment. In my research I identified these discourses in the texts of the protagonists of the conference: Sexual harassment is just a sexual behaviour, Colonization of sexual harassment by legal discourse and Construction of the Subjects. In the articles of the critics of the conference I identified following discourses: Sexual harassment is an abuse of power, Construction of the expertise on sexual harassment. The protagonists of the conference co-created hermeneutical and testimonial injustice towards victims, while the conference critics co-created testimonial justice but neverthless contributed to furthering hermeneutical injustice towards victims.

The politicization of the language issue in Ukraine: the discursive construction of the language, nationalism, and identity in Ukrainian media.

Despite already thirty years after gaining independence, Ukraine is still having difficulties forming an integral and united national identity. The language issue in Ukraine is a vivid example of the problem Ukraine is confronting. Numerous efforts have been made with the aim to strengthen the role of the Ukrainian language, but the presence of the Russian language in Ukraine is still strong. Furthermore, the battle between these two languages often provokes huge public debates, and the debates do not revolve around the language use itself, but usually associate it with the wider debate of the Ukrainian common memory. Although much research has been devoted to analysing the narratives of relevant language laws, the discourses of Ukrainian politicians, or public opinions of the language issue and their links with people's political orientation, this thesis will focus on the discourses of media, an equally important site which represents and reproduces everyday nationalism. Representation of Syrian refugees in the Turkish mainstream media

There has been an increase in the number of people migrating around the world in recent decades. The main reasons for this migration are mostly social pressures, conflicts, and wars. With the Arab spring, which showed its effect in the early 2010s, a civil war arose in Syria. With the civil war that had its influence in Syria in 2011, thousands of people had to take shelter in Turkey. With the rapid increase in Syrian refugees who took refuge in Turkey, this issue has become vital in Turkey's agenda. Many studies on the media and the representation of immigrants and refugees show that these groups are often negatively represented. In this research, news about Syrian refugees published in Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, and Sabah newspapers, among the best-selling newspapers in Turkey, are examined. In addition, the fact that the three selected newspapers have different political stances, this situation adds sample diversity to this research. June 2011 - March 2012 and June 2016 - March 2017 constitute the times of the sample. The first time sample represents the early times of both the Syrian Civil war and the arrivals of Syrian refugees in Turkey. It aims to shed light on how (de)politicisation manifests itself at the level of the referendum actors' utterances and how actors use these strategies during the referendum to reproduce or change the existing ordering of the political space. The research is based on the concept of (de)politicisation as a form of political action and the premise that by the use of language as an instrument of symbolic power, one can shape the social reality. Critical Discourse Analysis of Turkish Newspapers on Gezi Protests and Arab Spring: A Comparative Analysis of 'Sabah' and 'Cumhuriyet' Newspapers.

Protests have been important social phenomena for the wider Middle East, especially since the Arab Spring, with the potential to achieve dramatic change. Understanding the nature of uprisings in the region is important for our understanding of the present and the future. To this end, this thesis tried to make sense of the dynamics and processes that led to the emergence of three protests in the region, the 25th of January Revolution in Egypt, the Syrian Uprising, and the Gezi protest. It tried to analyze the different aspects in which they were comparable. Furthermore, it tried to analyze their representation in the media by uncovering the differences and similarities between the discourse of two Turkish newspapers, Sabah and Cumhuriyet, in their columns and news reports regarding these instances of protests. Critical discourse analysis was used alongside comparative case study to see the differences between social reality and the discourse of the newspapers. Securitising Nuclear Energy: Analysis of speech acts related to the possible construction of a new reactor at the existing Dukovany Nuclear Power Station

This Master's thesis dealt with securitization attempts related to the planned construction of a new reactor at the Dukovany NPP. Therefore, its aim was to find, analyse and explain securitization speech acts associated with the planned reactor, in the period from summer 2015 to December 2020 using the critical discourse analysis approach. The results show that securitization speech acts of this kind do appear in the Czech public sphere and are articulated mainly by four groups of actors: representatives of Austria, Czech environmental NGOs, Czech governmental representatives, and Czech political opposition. These actors have different goals: to stop the construction of the reactor, to implement the construction of the reactor, or to influence the way in which the construction will be implemented. One case of successful securitization was found in the outcome: The Czech government was able to enforce extraordinary measures that deviated from standard democratic processes using security-based arguments. Their goal was to implement the construction of the reactor. It remains to add that the research also revealed three important functional actors who co-created the discourse: the BIS secret service, the SÚJB nuclear safety office and the company ČEZ.

The fenomenon of Karel Gott in Czech press during 1960s - 1980s

This diploma thesis with the title The phenomenon of Karel Gott in Czech press during 1960s-1980s researches a media representation of Karel Gott. Media representation of the most popular singer of Czechoslovakia is in this thesis constructed based on the analysis of media contents of three contemporary printed serials during the years 1959-1989. The theoretical part of this thesis focuses on the area of cultural politics, it deals with specific attributes of popular music in Czechoslovakia and it also presents the identity of Karel Gott. This part of thesis also deals with the press production with focus on the censorship. The aim of this thesis is to compile the media representation of Karel Gott using the method of critical discourse analysis presented by Norman Fairclough. The analysis uses mentioned method to research contents regarding Karel Gott and published in contemporary printed media, such as the serial Mladý svět, Vlasta, Pionýrské noviny, Sedmička and also Sedmička pionýrů. The purpose of this research work is to find out if and in which ways was the media representation of Karel Gott helping to establish the dominant discourse. Media Image of Designer Vivienne Westwood: Activism versus Branding

This diploma thesis deals with the critical mapping of British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood with a focus on the relationship between her activist actions and branding. The goal of this thesis is to analyse discourse practice and uncover the meaning behind creating Westwood's media image. Westwood is actively involved in political, social and environmental matters. She's known for her critical stance towards the establishment, consumer society as well as economic system. She stood at the beginning of punk and helped to define its visual identity. She belongs amongst known sustainable fashion advocates which reflects her famous quote 'buy less, choose well, make it last'. On the other hand, she built a global fashion brand with annual turnover of more than 40.7 million pounds in 2017 and she herself became the subject of criticism because of this contradiction towards her own actions. Some critics pointed out that she urges the public to consume less but owns a global network of stores under her name at the same time. From a methodological point of view the thesis is based on qualitative research, specifically on critical discourse analysis whose mechanisms help to uncover power relationships and put this issue into a broader context.
