The concept of classes in the history of social thought and contemporary sociology

This thesis is a theoretical-historical attribute and focuses on the theory of classes and class conflict, on the genesis of the concept of class. The thesis will analyze the authors and directions-schools that have had an impact on the ideological founder of the concept Karl Marx and also how they developed their thinking. Marx nor any other author of the term "class, classes, class" never clearly defined. It is a historical and sociological perspective on the concept of "class", which is often defined differently, and still there is any clear definition, which would approve whole academic community. In modern societies, the term "class" is not used so often and has been replaced by the concept of social stratification. In recent years, the "classes" being discussed by worldwide experts, but the solution is still not found. Nevertheless, this work is optimistic and the author clearly advocates that the term "class" will not vanish from professional sociological discourse.

Consumer culture of social classes in terms of food purchasing and consumption habits Monika Novotná Abstract This work deals with historical and sociological view on the issue of grocery obtaining and consumption between the end of World War II to the present. Grocery obtaining and consumption is understood as a symbolic expression of social status in society. The work is divided into two parts. Theoretical-historical part examines how food consumption is linked to changes of social stratification. Research part of thesis builds on the theme of food consumption by examining the shopping habits in relation to social class. The main question of theoretical-historical part is whether and how food consumption, relates to social differentiation. Trend of convergence of differences in consumption and rate of consumption stratification of social classes are monitored in time series in two eras - the communist period and the period after 1989. For both periods, a secondary analysis of historical data on the consumption of specific types of food that aims to detect differences or similar trends between social classes. Social stratification of domain Horšovský Týn in the 17th - 19th century

Abstract.docx 1/1 Abstract This thesis is focused on the living conditions of the serf population in the West Bohemian domain of Horšovský Týn beetween 17th and 19th centuries. The core of this work is in the 17th century. The geografical area of the domain was defined in the Tax Rule - the city, fifty- four villages and five partial villages. This paper consists of four basic sections. In the first section you can find the overview of the main literature regarding this topic. The second one is dedicated to the brief historical and territorial development of the domain and to the characteristic of the administrative and economic circumstances. The demografical structure of the domain in the 17th century is described in depth in the third section. This analysis was done on the basis of the register of the serf people classified according to their religion. The focus is partially dedicated to the social structure as well, mainly to the houseless lodgers and servants. The typology and composition of the households is discussed briefly. Above that, there is an approximation of population in the domain Horšovský Týn from the mid 17th until the end of 19th century. Social Status Inconsistency in the Czech Republic: What does the first decade of 21st century suggest?

David Daneš Social Status Inconsistency in the Czech Republic: What does the first decade of 21st century suggest? Abstract This thesis deals with the multidimensional concept of social status and mainly with the phe- nomenon of unbalanced position at several stratification scales - social status inconsistency. The work provides a comprehensive overview of the use of this concept in foreign and subse- quently in the Czech sociology with background of interpretation of classical theoretical con- cepts and approaches to social stratification as such. Then the author's own analysis of data from the ISSP surveys is presented. Author refines existing research's results and also de- scribes the progress of the core metrics of status inconsistency in more than a decade, which for this purpose so far not been analyzed. Analysis based on the operationalisation established in the Czech sociology showed that rising trend of status consistency described by Czech au- thors in the nineties does not continue. Even the degrees of status consistency doesn't keep that level. There are two significant declines during the late nineties and around 2009, which are also decline in performance of the national economy (GDP) - the relationship of the two variables being tested. The next part of the work analyses stratification researches in the period of the dominance of the communistic regime in the Czechoslovakia. This period is mainly connected with Pavel Machonin who executed an important sociological research in 1967. The most extensive part of this thesis is devoted to the period after the Velvet Revolution in the Czech Republic. In this chapter are compared themes that authors devoted to the topic social stratification during several years after the Velvet revolution with the contemporary reflection of social stratification. Evolution of Russian Middle Class in 1998-2008

The existence of Russian middle class is often perceived as a condition for Russia's democratization and the country's economic progress is often mentioned in connection with the growth of the middle class and henceforth increased popular demand for transparent functioning of public institutions. However economic growth does not necessarily lead to more extensive middle class, especially not when the income inequality rises as was the case of Russia in the particular period. This thesis proves that Russian middle class grew between the years 1998 and 2008, it identifies its specific features and explains its evolution from the perspective of occupation and income. The data from Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, which the thesis is based on, confirm that while the Russian middle class was growing in size, growth in inequality was also observed, especially between cities and countryside and between individual economic sectors.

Prestige and social stratification in Czech society between 1988-1999

In 1989 the Czech history was significant for the revolution which meant that Czech society has shifted toward the east to west. The company which prevailed in the egalitarian principles finds itself face to face with the reality of the Western World where their orientation did not belong. In the opinion of people still persisted not only a desire for social security but also a certain amount of indignation over the rapidly growing income differentiation, which was reflected negative evaluation of wealthier people - a role also played a series of scandals (tunneling and rapid collapse of the newly establishing businesses). The Czech company was prior to the1989 only minimally stratified. After the revolution was necessary to create a new elite, the middle class and in parallel to create the new bottom layer. Dynamic development was the emerging middle class old (enterpriser), more gradually evolved a new middle class (professionals with university education) whose conversion is a matter of several generations. Compare prestige (at the time of transform and in front of it) must be used as the default range of 1967 because this is the last range created in communist Czechoslovakia. The Youth Consumerism and Its Interdependency with Economic and Cultural Capital

The work deals with the consumerism of thirteen and fourteen years old youths. The authoress aims to answer the question of what extent the observed age category seems to be consumer in their attitudes and whether their consumerist attitudes have an universal character or whether it is structurally related to their economic and cultural capital. At first the authoress briefly presents the consumerism as a sociological topic. She pays a particular attention to the impact of social stratification on the lifestyle. As her main theoretical basis she states a concept of homologous classes of Pierre Bourdieu, from which she incorporates the concept of economic and cultural capital as the main differentiating principles affecting the lifestyle. In addition she presents the characteristics of today's school children in the context of Czech society and mentions the role of socialization in the transfer of capital and consumption patterns from parents to their child. Finally, the authoress describes her approach to the analysis of data on attitudes towards the consumption in defined age category.
