Lychman, Illia ; Chalupský, Petr (advisor) ; Higgins, Bernadette (referee)
The main theme of this thesis is English war poetry. The thesis refers to two particular wars, the Crimean (1853-1856) and World War One (1914-1918), and analyzes their reflection in English poetry. By doing so, it compares the war poems from these periods and inspects the writers' messages behind them. The thesis aims to scrutinize how the depiction of war had changed through time, alongside with the reasons affected it. In terms of structure, the theoretical part describes the different contexts (historical, cultural, and literary) of the chosen poems, while the practical part features scrutiny of these works. Anti-immigration Attitude in Czech Music: Semiotic Analysis
Růžička, Miroslav ; Podzimek, Jan (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
In my diploma thesis, I am reconstructing the anti-immigration attitude in Czech nationalist music production in the year 2016 in the context of the so-called European migration crisis. The sample consists of five selected music videos for nationalist protest songs reacting to the migration crisis and events connected to it. The thesis is based on the theoretical resources of social semiotics and the method of research is the multimodal semiotic analysis, which allows detailed research of the contents of complex communicates like music videos. In the theoretical part, I focus on acquainting the reader to the basics of semiotics, from where I gradually transfer to the school of social semiotics and their theories of modes and multimodality which represent the theoretical background for the analysis in the practical part. Next, I turn to clarifying the progress of the so-called European migration crisis in the years 2015 and 2016 which were crucial for the creation of these nationalist music videos. Also, I justify the choice of the sample and the analyzed themes. The practical part the contains the analysis of the selected music videos using the multimodal semiotic analysis considering three modes - the mode of speech, moving pictures and music. I decode the signs belonging to the pre-set themes....
Political tabloid press on examples of titles "Na vlastní oči Praha 10" and "Na vlastní oči"
Komrska, Jiří ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
The main goal of this diploma thesis was to find patterns on the pages of Na vlastní oči (With One's Own Eyes) title that define gutter press in its specific form of political tabloid. The analysis was concerned with the time period from 2016 to 2019 during which the said title was published in total of four waves each of which related to the relevant pre-election campaign. The Na vlastní oči title was initially published anonymously and only later Jan Čížek, publisher of the regional town-hall newspaper and a Freedom and Direct Democracy Party (SPD) candidate, claimed to be the publisher. SPD subsequently became the final sponsor of the newspaper. In the first wave of publishing activity, the authors of the title focused on a disparaging campaign against the then-candidate for the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Parliament and, in a broader context, against the whole opposition within the City Council of the Prague 10 City Ward. In its later publications, the newspaper dealt mostly with topics aimed at spreading fear of an unspecified danger associated with the refugee crisis and concerns about the unknown in the form of the Islamic Religion which was always associated with the threat of terrorism. In the context of its election programme, SPD also communicated groundless criticism...
„The Czechs will live, and live long, for the salvation of themselves and of Slavdom.” Prophecy in the culture of the Czech Enlightenment and Romanticism
Futtera, Ladislav
This article follows the development of the genre of prophecy on the Czech (in the provincial sense) scene from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century with the stress on the modification of this traditional genre of spiritual literature within the context of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. After the middle of the century, the prophecy genre gradually emerged from its exclusively spiritual contexts and despite the dismissive attitude of some enlightenment adherents, it became an instrument for the education of subjects in the spirit of enlightened paternalism or Josephinism. Its development throughout the 19th century is then reflected in the emergence of provincial patriotism and its gradual suppression by ethnic nationalism. Both these discourses made use of the potential of prophecies referring to the Czech lands as a narrative that anchored the national community between the past, the present and the future. The greatest potential was offered by prophecy referring to Vyšehrad and Princess Libuše, who was portrayed from the end of the 18th century as a (semi-)mythical guarantor of the continuity of Czech statehood. The second key text is the Blaník prophecy, but when this became part of the Czech national discourse, its adherents underwent a transformation. The authority of the prophet, the Sibyll and the Blind Youth gradually give way to the authority of historical figures, Saint Václav and the Hussites, who were associated with prophecy, accompanying it with the constitutive Czech historical narrative.

Manifestations and rate of patriotism and fanfare in daily newspapers on the example of the czech and the slovak national hockey team
Moravec, Vít ; Macková, Veronika (advisor) ; Trunečka, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis examines whether Czech and Slovak printed national daily newspapers reveal expressions of patriotism and fanfare in ice-hockey news reports. Sports matches between two nations, which once formed one state, have all the requisites for being more special and prestigious than regular matchups. For this reason, these two events have been selected as suitable for analysis: the final match in the 2000 World Championship between the Czech Republic and Slovakia (5:3) and the 2012 semifinal between the same opponents (1:3). The theoretical part introduces concepts of nation, nationalism, national identity, national symbols, myths, stereotypisation and fanfare. In the empirical part, a discourse analysis is performed for their examination and application on a research sample, which consists of texts from the time of the given matches between the Czech and Slovak national teams. As an assistant method, a quantitative content analysis has been chosen to provide answers to questions concerning the number and location of articles in each country's newspapers. The results of the analysis proved that Czech and Slovak printed daily newspapers frequently reveal expressions of patriotism and fanfare in the period under review, distinctively using the first person of the plural "we" or a tendency...
Czech Emigration in Western Europe, USA and Canada; National Consciousness and Relationship to Homeland in Comparation with Attitudes of Czechs Living in National State
Feitl, David ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Lupták Burzová, Petra (referee)
The subject of this thesis is a diversified conception of Czechishness. The main proposition is a comparison of types and aspects of relation to the country in the case of (political) emigrants after 1948 in contrast with the "home-based" non-emigrant Czech population. The thesis will briefly mention also the preceding periods of Czech emigration, the socio-economic situation at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries, the 1950s etc. All this will be put into the context of the historical turning of the Czech lands away from the West, despite the latter being the destination of the post-February emigrants. In this respect the description of social-political events as perceived by the citizens at the time, by the official propaganda and by emigrants is crucial. The image of the West or emigrants as perceived then together with other conclusions will be compared with the basic theories of migration and migration policy. In the section on political emigration legislation of the period incl. its wording will be quoted. The thesis focuses exclusively on emigrants to the West, especially to Western Europe, the USA and Canada, but also to Australia and Israel. It reflects the direction and the main centres of emigration, checks the relevance of information on the numbers of exiled Czechs, their...
