Annotated Czech Translation: The Lion and the Mouse; The New Yorker, 2008

This thesis aims to translate the essay The Lion and the Mouse by Jill Lepore from English into Czech. The essay, published in The New Yorker in July 2008, follows the creation of E. B. White's book Stuart Little as a way of talking about children's literature in general. The second part of the thesis provides an analysis of the source text, describes the selected translation method, discusses the major translation problems along with their solutions and presents the translation shifts that occurred during the translation process. The present bachelor thesis comprises of two main parts - the translation from Spanish to Czech and the commentary on the translation. The source texts are selected chapters from the book 20 nuevos directores del cine español by Carlos Hereder, which are composed as biographical summaries of the directors' lives and their work. The commentary consists of the analysis of the source text, description of the selected method of translation, typology of translation problems and shifts which occurred during the translation process. Translation with Commentary: Marr, Andrew: A History of Modern Britain

The core of this bachelor's thesis is a translation of an extract from the book A History of Modern Britain by the British journalist Andrew Marr. The first part of this thesis consists of the translated text. The selected chapters are dealing with the situation in Britain at the turn of the millennium and the last years of the New Labour government. The second part consists of a commentary of the translation. There is an analysis of the original text in terms of the extratextual and intratextual factors, then typology of translation problems with examples of solutions, a summary of translation shifts and a description of the translation method.

This thesis presents a translation of Nordic Larp: Theatre, Art and Game, an essay by Jaakko Stenros, which was published as the closing piece in the Nordic Larp (2010) book. The first part of the thesis consists of the translation of the essay itself, which introduces Nordic larp as a phenomenon and contextualizes it within the theoretical frames of theatre, art and games. The second part of the thesis presents a commentary on the translation: first, the source text is analysed from the point of view of extratextual and intratextual factors and the translation method is determined. The thesis also includes an analysis of translation problems and translation shifts.
