Vodová, Veronika ; Heider, David (advisor) ; Kučera, Miloš (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to introduce the topic of humor in the context of romantic relationships from the perspective of both partners separately. The theoretical part analyzes the conceptual definition of humor in terms of its functions, aims, styles, focus and the participants in the communication process. Furthermore, the thesis discusses the topic of romantic relationships, presents theoretical models of their formation and stages, describes factors influencing relationship cohesion, and reflects on couple conflicts and the communication strategies that constitute them. The empirical part of the thesis presents qualitative research focusing on the phenomenology of humor in six heterosexual romantic relationships with 12 respondents. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and the subsequent analysis was developed using principles of grounded theory method. Valtonen, Zuzana ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Švelch, Jan (referee)
The work deals with the analysis of parody in computer games. Specifically, a parody of educational games. This work examines five computer parody games Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning, Baldi's Fun New School, Baldina's Basis in Education Literary Grammar, Frog Fractions and Supervised Driver's Education. In selected parody games, work describes the elements of parody, which are then interpreted using three theoretical approaches to humour, which are the theory of incongruence, the theory of superiority and the theory of relief. The work tries to find out how the contexts of educational games and parodies are related by means of the analysis of selected games. It qualitatively examines the themes, mechanics and audio-visual aspects of both genres and then compares them. Furthermore, the work discusses the history of educational games and their shortcomings, which are related to the significant expansion of parodies in the 90s. Among other things, it describes the function of parody on the examples of the most frequently ridiculed game conventions first-person shooter, boss fight and achievement system. At the end of the thesis, he mentions the universality of parody within another genre and gives an example of parody of parody, which is a parody musical played on YouTube, parodying the...
Straight up serious top shit
Ferenc, Jiří ; Sikora, Erik (referee) ; Hládeková, Katarína (advisor)
Diloma's work objectifies humour and makes the viewer feel that art does not have to be overly serious or condescending. Ideally, the work should induce relaxation and laughter in the viewer, such as when reading memes on a cell phone. At the same time, the whole project should feel like a full-fledged gallery exhibition. The project is not so much about the themes of the individual works as it is about the method of communication, which is humour. For the art community, the thesis could eventually offer the question of the legitimacy of humour in art. The thesis is based on the assumption that humour exists in art, but is often not visible. This is due to the fact that there are not a large number of artists who work with humour in a long-term and purposeful way.

Wicha, Lukáš ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
The topic of computer/video games and their translation has only recently attracted attention of translation scholars. The thesis aims at introducing the phenomenon as a legitimate topic of translation studies, presenting it as a specific and influential medium with an extensive user subculture. A description of the overall process of game localization, and specifically its practice in the Czech Republic are included. Lexical analysis of selected computer game reviews and online discussions is complemented with a questionnaire survey to reveal if and how computer games and game- focused articles influence the constitution of a characteristic sociolect and its usage outside the gamer subculture. Concepts used in intercultural and interlingual transfer of computer games are defined and compared with established terms in translation studies. A comparative analysis of original and Czech versions of two computer games is carried out to identify translation methods used in the transfer of culture- and language-specific elements in order to determine whether the process of computer game translation exhibits any specific features that may justify the introduction of new terms into translation studies. Title: The Language Humour in Andvertising Author: Radka Čimingová Department: Department of czech language and literature Supervisor: PhDr. Radka Holanová, Ph.D. Abstract: The presented work deals with linguistic analysis of means that frame humour in printed advertising. The analysis of the language humour is based on a selected advertising sample. This sample was used to identify, classify and specify individual linguistic means in more detail. Humour is interpreted as a play on words that is built around updating, change, intentional breaking of established rules, incongruity and around the relationship between language and extralinguistic reality. This play resulting in a comic tone of the advertisement concerns meaning as well as graphic form of individual linguistic means, usage of different varieties of lexis, intertextual connection and the relationship between words and pictures. The work covers all these aspects of the linguistic play on words as well as describes the theoretical context in which the play takes place and specifies the basic terms connected to the subject of the thesis, i.e. advertising and humour. Kurt Vonnegut and His Humor in Three Literary Works and Their Cinematic Adaptations
Samková, Jana ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
This bachelor thesis compares three different cinematic adaptations of three novels by an American writer Kurt Vonnegut and focuses on the way they translate the humor of the three novels. The novels discussed are Mother Night (1962), Slaughterhouse Five (1969), and Breakfast of Champions (1973). The cinematic adaptations analyzed in this thesis are Slaughterhouse Five (1972) directed by George Roy Hill and based on a screenplay written by Stephen Geller, Mother Night (1996) directed by Keith Gordon and based on a screenplay written by Robert B. Weide and finally Breakfast of Champions (1999) directed by Alan Rudolph who also wrote the screenplay. The analysis as such is divided into four chapters. Chapter 2 introduces Kurt Vonnegut as an author as well as a person. Several key theories about humor are presented, mainly those articulated by Paul Lewis, Daniel Wickberg and Sarah Blacher Cohen. The phenomenon of cinematic adaptation is introduced in the same section and the theoretical background provided is based on works by Timothy Corrigan, Brian McFarlane and Seymour Chatman. Chapter 3 discusses the novel Slaughterhouse Five and its adaptation, focusing on its structure, themes, characters, time frame and humor. In Chapter 4, Mother Night is discussed in terms of the successfulness of Gordon's...
Boundaries of Humour
Holada, Matouš ; Paulíček, Miroslav (advisor) ; Chylíková, Johana (referee)
This paper examines the phenomenon of controversial humor on the social networking site Facebook. Here there exist several entertainment pages, dedicated to the purpose of publishing and sharing comic material; most notably jokes in the form of humorous images. Sometimes, some of these jokes become a source of conflicts and a target of criticism by certain Facebook users, who consider them unacceptable. The present study therefore aims at examining the characteristics of these jokes, to help shed light on what is today considered inappropriate in the sphere of humor. For this purpose, an analysis of jokes and comments on them, left by their readers, was conducted on several Facebook pages. This research revealed the fact that jokes about current, medially covered disasters where the biggest source of controversies. Further inquiries into their nature then showed that aversion to this type of humor cannot be explained by applying superiority theory (contrary to certain other types of humor; for example ethnic or sexist jokes). The source of conflicts about disaster jokes is therefore seen in the clash of disparate views, held by Facebook users about the nature of norms, governing what is and what isn't acceptable to joke about. The conclusion to this paper then suggests possible directions for...
Literary-didactic potential of "České nebe"
Jiskrová, Zuzana ; Peterka, Josef (advisor) ; Klumparová, Štěpánka (referee)
This thesis directly continues my bachelor thesis titled "What and Why do we laugh with Jára Cimrman at". The first, theoretical part, sums up the observation of the poetics of the plays of Jára Cimrman Theatre and subsequently proves them through interpretation of the last play of Smoljak & Svěrák called "České nebe". The first two chapters provide the theoretical base of knowledge for the four-hour-long lesson based on "České nebe" itself. Both these chapters mainly focus on the used humour and the character of Jára Cimrman, the Czech national genius, but also on related topics such as mystification, space-time, Czechness and composition. The second part of the thesis is then the main one which brings the theory into practice. "České nebe" as a play offers an enormous didactic potential which can be used to verify and deepen one's literacy. The didactic part includes a complex preparation for four lessons, for which it provides a basic introduction of Jára Cimrman Theatre and a summary of comedy techniques used by this theatre, which have a strong emphasis on parody. Mainly, though, it provides a brief insight into the opinions, values and the culturally-historical knowledge of a today's adolescent. The students had a chance to elect their own Czech heaven committee in their class and, by doing...
