Normality of the exception? Crisis Governance in reforming the Asylum and Migration Policy of the European Union

This doctoral thesis examines the issue of crisis governance of the European Union in the context of migration developments after 2015. The author investigates how relevant EU institutions (European Commission, Council of the EU, and European Council) construct exceptionality within the common asylum and migration policy and what might be its impacts on the functionality of this policy. Theoretically, the research is based on the concept of "state of exception" originally introduced in the works of Carl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben. The main objective of the thesis is to analyze and interpret the extraordinary migration measures from 2015 to 2018, which were proposed and implemented by the EU political actors to address the migration situation. The institutional level is further broadened and contextualized by including three EU Member State governments - Hungary, Austria, and Germany - and their involvement in the interactive shaping of emergency policies. The author studies how the exception is constructed in the EU official discourse, the relationship between exception and normality, and the exercise of power to create a state of exception at supranational/intergovernmental level of the EU as an international organization. Health within the frame of social discourse

The main goal of my thesis is to characterize the conception of "Health in the framework of social discourse" by the means of data analysis and analysis of supporting documentation of explanatory reports of governmental bills regulating the fields of hygiene, preventive measures and health protection within Czech republic, focused mainly on the field of public healthcare system. Theoretical part attempts to picture the above stated matter in a social context of modern society, to point out the ideological connection of how well-being of an individual is perceived in a social system in terms of its function. The main subject of the analysis will be explanatory report regarding a historical First republic law No. 332/1920 Coll., explanatory notes from the communist era - Law. No. 4/1952 Coll. on hygienic and anti-epidemic care and law no. 20/1966 Coll., on public healthcare. The last analyzed era will be the era after year 1989, which will be represented by explanatory notes regarding law no. 258/2000 Coll., on protection of public health and law no. 372/2011 Coll., on healthcare services. Hipsters and their Identity: Discursive Manifestations of Hipster Culture in VICE magazine

This research address the topic of hipster phenomenon and its discursive manifestations in the online magazine VICE. The theoretical part of the thesis submits the basic discursive frameworks which serve as a theoretical anchoring for the practical part based on discursive analysis of the articles. The analysis itself is based on 11 articles mainly from the section Remembering the Hipster, which was chosen as the most appropriate for this study. The aim of the thesis is to explore the main discursive manifestations of hipster culture in those articles and to find out, whether those reproduced manifestations overlap with identified categories from the theoretical part, or whether they differ from each other. The main purpose of this analysis is then to find out what does it mean to be hipster according to VICE magazine contributors.

Backpack, hiking boots and mascara: Analysis of women independent travelling from the perspective of anthropology of tourism

The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the gender aspects of women travelling and experience of women travellers, who set out to the non-Europe destinations on their own. The thesis is based on in-depth interviews with women travellers and analyze how these journeys are important to them. The thesis tries to point out that women's solo travelling directly effects their biography as well as career and status of these female travellers. Women independent travelling is introduced as the dynamic process, by means of which they acquire or verify the gender power and abilities, applicable to their personal life and work. Using the concepts of feminist theories implemented on women's travelling, I try to show that this type of travelling is affected by history and prefers male travelling, which displaces the individual women's travelling on the edge of the social and scientific interest. This thesis is based on the anthropology of tourism, particularly on the study of backpacking and set the experience of the woman traveller in the frame of the rites of passage. Power of ideology: Selective Gray's and Gruber's constructs

This master's thesis deals with the analysis of two popular psychological handbooks focusing on relationships between men and women, namely the book "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" by American psychologist J. Gray, and the Czech equivalent "Why women can't understand men" by D. Gruber. The main research question of this thesis is how gender stereotypes are created in popular psychology literature and by what means they become naturalized. The theoretical starting point is both the influence of popular psychology on its audience as well as the introduction of the basic concepts in their relation to gender as an analytic category, gender order, gender stereotypes and mechanisms of forming and maintaining masculinity and femininity. Empirical research presents qualitative content analysis and discourse analysis of "Why men are from Mars", women are from Venus compared with the Czech book "Why women can't understand men". The research mainly focuses on how these two authors work with gender stereotypes about men and women and their forming of seemingly everlasting and universal gender binarism.

The Intractability of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Comparing The Delegitimizing Discourse in Political Speeches by Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from 2015 until 2018

This bachelor's thesis views and analyzes the Israel-Palestinian conflict through the lens of Louis Kriesberg's intractable conflict theory (Kriesberg, 1998) and Daniel Bar-Tal's theory of delegitimization (Bar-Tal,1998). This work compares mutual delegitimization and the discourse of the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas by using a thematic discourse analysis. This work builds specifically on the theory of delegitimization of Neta Oren and Daniel Bar-Tal (Oren, Bar-Tal, 2007), which consists of five dimensions of delegitimization: dehumanization, trait characterization, outcasting, political labels, and group comparison. A sample of speeches of Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from the years from 2015 until 2018 has been analyzed. The delineation is chosen in this way since in 1994, peace accords between Israel and Palestine broke down. Also in this period character of conflicts changed to so-called Third intifada, which consists of series of smaller frequent conflicts. The Construction of "Dangerous dogs" in Blesk and Lidové noviny in the years 2001 and 2011

At the end of the 20th century the issue of so called "dangerous" dog breeds has become increasingly discussed in some European countries. These dogs are considered so threatening that some countries have decided to regulate or restrict their breeding by law. This thesis looks at the articles in Blesk tabloid and Lidové noviny daily newspaper in the years 2001 and 2011 and explores how the dangerous aspect of these breeds was constructed there. Through discourse analysis it investigates the image of "dangerous dogs" presented in these newspapers and what these representations imply. The results of the analysis confirm that all the selected materials explicitly construct the image of dangerous dogs and at the same time implicitly suggest the existence of their "positive" counterparts which helps drawing the line between "good" and "bad" dogs, and hence also between "good" and "bad" owners of the dogs. In all cases, it is apparent that the issue thematised on the level of dog breeds in fact charaterises the relation of man to the animal as well as the society. Discourse Analysis of Representation of the Greek Crisis in Wall Street Journal

This thesis analyzes media representation of Greek crisis in the Wall Street Journal at the time of parliamentary elections in Greece in June 2012. Using the method of critical discourse analysis the thesis characterizes the specific representation, while focusing on the representation of key actors, their relationships and the economic program called austerity. This thesis argues that the representation reflects the discourse of neoliberalism, it demonstrates that it legitimizes the austerity plan and it identifies the means of argumentation, on which the discourse draws.

The role of the Czech public media in the pension reform discourse

The thesis 'The role of the Czech public media in the pension reform discourse' aims to provide a critical reflection on the role of the Czech Television and the Czech Radio in the debate over the changes in the pension scheme of the Czech Republic. The principal method used for that is the discourse analysis, which comprises quality and quantity analysis of the media output, interviews and personal observation. The research project focuses on the context the debate over the pension reform occurs and how it is presented in the public media. The theoretical part summarizes the theoretical concepts used in the research project, i.e. concepts from the field of public policy, social policy, mass communication and discourse analysis. The empirical part examines the institutional development of the pension reform, its variations in political, scholarly (Czech and international) and public discourse. The major part of the research project is based on the discourse analysis of the pension reform discourse in the Czech public media. The role of the public media in the pension reform discourse is deduced on the basis of the theoretical and empirical parts.

National Identity in the Propaganda of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (May 1945 - May 1946)

National legitimacy played in the politics of post-war Communist Party of Czechoslovakia an important role. The addressees of communist policy should primarily be "members of the nation." The subject of my research work in this way was the formulation of national identity and its role in the Communist politics in the first postwar year, especially the cultural field. For the conceptualization of the concept of propaganda in the Communist Party, I was inspired discourse analytical approaches that have helped me in exploring answers to the question of the role of Czech national identity in the propaganda of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
