Producing and Consuming the nation: ethnography of a Czech National Memorial
Maurano Filho, Sander Roberto ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Sander Roberto Maurano Filho Producing and Consuming the Nation: Ethnography of a Czech National Memorial Abstract Following a research agenda stimulated by Billig (1995), Palmer (1998) and Fox (2008) towards the study of aspects of everyday life through which nations are reproduced, this work approaches the National Memorial on Vítkov Hill, part of the Czech National Museum in Prague. In order to investigate to what extend national cultural productions constrain people's practices and understandings, this research offers an ethnographic study of the production and consumption of the monument, considering practices of consumption and occupation that reproduce, subvert or negotiate its national content and colossal planning. The National Memorial on Vítkov Hill combines memorial, museum, statue and park, which had their meanings re-negotiated by different political regimes during the 20th century. Re-opened in 2009 aiming to 'make sense' of national history, identity and memory in the context of a new, democratic and European Czech Republic, the monument combines official ceremonies, such as military parades and presidential rituals, with permanent and temporary exhibitions with national functions. Although planned to celebrate the nation, exhibitions are consumed by visitors that distort the national...

Drahný, Stanislav ; Mazuch, Martin (advisor) ; Ekrt, Boris (referee)
Norwegian World War II Experience - 65 Years of Its Metamorphosis
Pokorný, Ondřej ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Svobodný, Petr (referee)
Bachelor thesis Norwegian World War II Experience - 65 Years of Its Metamorphosis examines a development of an interpretation of the Second World War in Norway. It pursues to analyze the Norwegian historiography on the background of the evolution of the same phenomenon in the area of Western Europe. From the first post-war years until the end of 1980's was the development of the Norwegian historiography confined to a generally accepted concensus which perceived the war as a struggle of the vast majority of Norwegians united in a resistance against foreign enemies and a limited group of their Norwegian henchmen. The field of the resistance was scrutinized primarily, then, in the 1970's, first research on the issue of collaboration was made. Nevertheless, the historical publications kept their black-and-white perspective of the war experience until the turn of 1980's and 1990's, when a new generation of historians broke into the research and since then it has been trying to achieve a synthesis of this dominant perspective. Moreover, this generation is focused on the grey zones of the occupation period. The thesis demonstrates that there have been striking similarities between the development in Norway and Western Europe, yet, the Norwegian historiography falls behind. Another area of interest is how...
Use of natural science museums and collections for educational purposes
Jandová, Jana ; Rajsiglová, Ina (advisor) ; Drda Morávková, Alena (referee)
Nowadays there is a considerable tendency towards encouraging students to seek for information and deepen their knowledge themselves rather than classical frontal educational methods. Thanks to this trend teachers tend to use i.e. museum collections for educational purposes in order to present life in the past as well as at present to students in a more enjoyable way. Everything that students learn by their own experience is sure to be remembered more vividly. The aim of my Master Thesis is to propose excursions to four selected museums. Worksheets are to be provided for each excursion and shall be tested in practice as well. The conclusion of the Master Thesis is that museums strive to attract schools with various educational programs, lectures and excursions. Nevertheless, they concentrate mainly on social sciences. Educational programs, intended solely for natural sciences or biology, are very rare. However, biology teachers may - to a considerable extent - use wide variety of expositions and collections of museums. Key words: excursion, educational program, worksheet, museum, children's museums

The subject of the Bachelor thesis is the design and assesssment of the steel (load bearing) structure of the future museum of military equipment. The building, with passageway for the visitors, is going to serve museum for garaging medium and heavy equipment. The framework is constructed by connection of abutment pillars placed in the distance of 10 m and roof girders with haunches. Construction is designed to have mono-pitched roof created by 5,36 m long pillar and 6,4 m long pillar connected with girder. In the endwise direction the frames are in the distance of 6 m. The construction is specific by its plan. By its cranking at the end of the first wing under 45° angle there is created smaller interstice. At the end of the interstice is another 45° angle cranking connected to the second wing. Thanks to the cranking between the wings the first wing extends endwise and the second extends crosswise. Another specifics are gate constructions placed on the side of the higher pillars. The gate is intended for enterance and exit of the military equipment to be placed for an exposition in the museum. The framework is designed by norms ČSN EN for the ultimate and serviceability limit state. As the main material used for load-bearing elements was steel S355.

LABORARTORY BRNO
Pospíšil, Tomáš ; Nový, Vítězslav (referee) ; Ponešová, Barbora (advisor)
The object of the proposal is a gallery of modern and new media art together with a community centre, which serves as a platform for creating projects in borderland between science and art. The form of the two separately standing buildings is significantly influenced by their surroundings. The modern barrier of the street Koliště is enhanced by blind concrete facades of the designed buildings. The unity with Cejl indicates reclusion, rawness and sense of community, especially significant is the parterre which is shaped as two atria with different levels of intimacy. The dominant feature of the project is a superelevated golden cube, which conceals the main space of the gallery. It is situated behind the wall of buildings and it looks down at the city centre, which is possible thanks to its height. The remaining space is located in lower level and it is less opulent, as it stands back to the street on one side and completely opens itself into atriums through glassed-in walls on the other side. The goal of the project was to extract and put into shape specific aspects of the place and to create a user-friendly environment.
