Run on Money Market Mutual Funds in 2008.Old Fashioned Panic or Rational Response?
Kovář, Kamil ; Chytil, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Mirvald, Michal (referee)
Money market mutual funds (MMMFs) constitute one of the largest parts of modern financial system. Their nature is such that for a long time they were seen as perfectly safe investment, on par with insured banks. However, dramatic events of the financial crisis of 2007-2008 result in what was called run on MMMFs. This run on MMMFs which occurred in September 2008 was one of the most important parts of financial crisis of 2007-2008. This paper attempts to understand why large scale withdrawals from MMMFs occurred and if these withdrawals followed some clear pattern. In order to do this I construct several models which test whether runs on MMMFs were discriminate or indiscriminate in relation to their portfolio holdings. These models are tested on novel dataset. Results of these tests proved to be conclusive only partly, as time variables indicate that in at least one week of September 2008 the runs were indiscriminate, but concerns about the correctness of the specification remains.

The motive of hospitality in Old French romances of XIIth century
Špatenková, Lucie ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Jamek, Václav (referee)
This work aims at describing the motive of hospitality and to show the deeper sense of rituals, which come along with it. The starting point is the motive of the journey, understood in this context not on ly as a movement in real time and space but also as the endeavor of a man to understand the world. The Old French lais show voyage in the Other World as their only motive. The hero leaves the world of humans to follow his fairy mistress into her realm, often associated with the realm of the dead. The hero, being chosen by the fairy is thus elevated to immortality. The Old French romances offer a more complicated scheme. The voyage is understood as a sequence ofvarious adventures and tasks the hero has to accomplish. The motives of hospitality show a larger scale than in the lais. Besides hospitality offered by beings from the other world who test the heroes constancy and fidelity as well as other chivalric qualities. Hospitality offered by human hosts show s relations between different classes of society. We witness the fraternity of the knights as well as subordination of townspeople. This picture, however, does not show the reality of the medieval society but the dream of the nobility of how the society should function. In reality towns gained more and more independence while the typical knights errant,...

Cultural ecology, cultural materialism, and Marxism
Szeryński, Tadeusz ; Soukup, Martin (referee) ; Soukup, Václav (advisor)
In my thesis, I attempt to outline the relation of the work of three prominent representatives of the 20th century American anthropology to Kari Marx's teachings. The text consists of four relatively independent parts joined by the subject of the application of materialist principles in the analysis of man and culture. In the first part, I advance my interpretation of the picture of man and nature in Kari Marx's writings. Besides Marx's approach to an individual and his activity, I also pay attention to his conception of the stmcture and development of human activity on the social level, where this practice acquires the complexion of socioeconomic formations, the succession of which constitutes human history unfolding in accordance with dialecticallaws. In the second part, I examine Marx' s inf1uence on the concept of man and culture in the writtings by Leslie Alvin White. Not only is it possible to identify the inspiration by Marx' s theories in White' s approach to the stmcture and development of a cultural system, but it is also obvious in his understanding of the relation of man to culture, and in certain passages on politi cal economy. The third part deals with Marvin Harris' s cultural materialism. I hope to show here the way that Harris employed certain fragments of Marx's method of historical...

Carbol, Luděk ; Čech, Petr (advisor) ; Černá, Stanislava (referee)
77 11 RESUME Legal capital de lege lata and de lege ferenda In the dissertation "Legal capital de lege lata and de lege ferenda", I draw attention to the current situation of registered capital of public companies and the theoretical concepts. In order to understand the role of the registered capital within the system of law, I analyse the historical basis of the concept and system of protection of creditors in company law. I deal with the role of registered capital for company by itself as well as with its function how to protect shareholders and creditors. The guiding objektive of this study is evaluace the feasibility of an alternative to the current regime of legal capital established by the Second Copmapy Law Directive and by legal framework set in Czech Commercial code (code 513/1991, subsequently amended). One building block of current capital regime of the EU and of the Czech Republic is the concept of a subscribed capital which is protected from distributions. The concept of subscribed capital is extended to the Second Directive's approach to capital maintenance, which provides restrictions on share repurchases, capital reductions, the withdrawal of shares and financial assistance. In my thesis I described all the functions and basic principles which legal capital creates. This institute has one...

Villalobos, Manuel ; Franková, Martina (advisor) ; Damohorský, Milan (referee)
ENGLISH SUMMARY This thesis, called "Environmental Principles and Their Application in International, European Community and Czech Law", discusses five selected environmental principles. This work only contains a narrow selection of fundamental environmental principles, considering the relatively large number of conservation principles that have been formulated to date. It deals with principles that we can find, either explicitly or implicitly, at all the named levels of law (i.e. International, European Community and Czech) on a regular basis and that are well established in legal theory at the same time. In the opening part of the thesis (i.e. second chapter) the matter has been explored from the legally-theoretical point of view. The introduction is dedicated to a general interpretation of the concept of "principle" as well as its definition purely within the legal field. Legal principles are defined here as leading ideas of law presenting essential values which are the general objectives of legal regulations. Fundamental attributes common to all legal principles can also be found in this part, as well as clarification of the principles' significance for law. In order to understand them better, the author also concentrates on the typology of principles. The purpose of the first part is to acquaint the...

Land regulation and its relation to environmental protection
Konvalinková, Tereza ; Drobník, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Franková, Martina (referee)
94 THESIS TITLE LAND CONSOLIDATION AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION RESUME The aim of my thesis is a partial analysis of the relationship amongst land consolidation process, reinstatement of private property after 1990, environment and private property constitutional protection. The process of land consolidation is a special tool, which helps to create preconditions for rational land keeping. The special legal statutes (mainly law No. 139/2002 Sb.) that regulate the land consolidation in the Czech Republic, creates a framework for these operations. The thesis includes a land consolidation historical overview, which is the key to the understanding of the land consolidation consequences for private property and relating landscape changes. The next chapter depicts the land consolidation importance, in the process of post communist private land property transformation in the 1990's. This further outlines the most important changes of the new land consolidation law, which came into force on 1st January 2003 (statute no. 139/2002 Sb.). These chapters form a context for the characterization of the land consolidation realization process (according the statute no. 139/2002 Sb.), including possible assets for the environment and agricultural land resources protection, and water management, which are...

Melkusová, Jana ; Daňhel, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Paholok, Igor (referee)
Thesis shows progression of catastrophic events and their influence on insurance market. Insurance and reinsurance are connected to conception of catastrophes and therefore it is necessary that this thesis firstly presents key features and classification of notion catastrophe itself. For understanding of the notion is important to differentiate between nature and manmade disasters. Next part summarizes large-scale events in 2008, significant events in the past and disasters in Czech Republic. Catastrophic events are analyzed from various angles, but the most important one seems to be insured losses volume. The core of the thesis is concerned with explanation of the disaster trend and its consequences. Key problem of disaster insurance is connected to the question, how to cover catastrophic losses for both, individuals and insurance companies.
