The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)
Dušek, Petr ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Rigorous thesis "The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)" deals with propaganda in the sports journalism. Its aim is to evaluate how the Czechoslovak press reported about successes of one of the best domestic athlet Emil Zatopek at the Olympic Games in London and Helsinki. I defined a hypothesis, based on specialized literature and observation, that journalists exploited Zatopek's triumphs for propagandistic reasons, and presented the successful athlet as a socialist hero. I verified this hypothesis by means of quantitative content analysis of the journals Rude pravo and Lidova demokracie. I defined two secondary hypothesis as well: The news coverage of the Olympic Games in 1952 was more propagandistically damaged than the Olympic Games in 1948, and the news coverage by Rude pravo of both Olympic Games was more propagandistically damaged than by Lidova demokracie. In the analysis I measure the propagandistic damage of the articles, the photos and the representations of Emil Zatopek. The whole research has a deep theoretical background, which includes a definition of propaganda, an outline of the cultural policy 1948-1952, and a definition of the "hero" concept based on different conceptions from both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The thesis "The Olympic Games in Munich as a Venue for the Political Rivalry between the FRG and the GDR" deals with the use of sport for political purposes by the two German states on the specific example of the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. These Olympic games were a breakthrough for both countries. For the FRG as a host country, they created an opportunity to show the world, a new and modern Germany. However on the other hand, the GDR could use it's first equal participation with an independent team in the Olympics to it's own advantage. The first part of the thesis is focused on the development of German-German rivalry in the Olympics. The next chapter describes the Olympic games in Munich and also answers the question; what the two German states wanted to achieve, how they wanted to achieve their goals and which one of the German states was more succesful in overall rivalry through the use of the games. Attention is also paid to the influence on political rivalry between the two states of the Palestinian assassination at the games. The conclusions of the thesis are supported by the analysis of the response of the political rivalry of the GDR and the FRG at the Munich Olympics in print media. With a focus specifically on the East German newspaper- Neues Deutschland and West German newspaper-...

The bidding process is being compared with its implementation, which is done for each particular olympics, and so are the national strategies of sustainable development of that particular location. The main objective is to find out if the local sustainability strategies are aligned both with the candidature and with the actual realization of the olympic games, and whether every following olympic games tend towards greater sustainability in comparison with the previous ones. The study is carried out through quantitative content analysis, the studied materials being the Official Reports of the olympic games and the strategic documents on sustainability of corresponding countries. The results show a significant mismatch between the set goals and the actual output (especially in case of Athens; while Sydney and London did considerably better in fulfilling their plans). Neither the plans nor the realizations of sustainability within the olympics were satisfyingly in accordance to the national sustainability strategies, as many topics considered crucial in the...
Ice hockey as a symbol of national identity: the Czech society 20 years after the Nagano triumph
Burdová, Karolína ; Numerato, Dino (advisor) ; Wladyniak, Ludmila Maria (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the process of building national identity through sport, specifically ice hockey. The thesis focuses primarily on the aspects contributing to the reproduction of the Czech national identity. Important aspects are mainly symbols, which remind us of the individual's belonging to the nation, as well as the media, which significantly help to the mythization of sports events. One of the events that played an important role in the formation of the Czech national identity is the 1998 Nagano Olympics. The success of the Czech hockey team in this tournament made part of the history twenty years ago; there are still many legacies of this triumph nowadays. The thesis is based on a research that combined several methods. I obtained the data through participant observation of the national team matches broadcasts, I also analysed documents that referred to the legacies of Czech victory, and I carried out semi-structured interviews with ice hockey fans. The interviews suggest that the victory of the Nagano hockey players, with the contribution of the media and banal nationalism, underwent the process of mythization, and thus played a significant role in the Czech national identity building.
