Němcová, Linda ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the framing of the Cyprus conflict in Czech print newspapers from the perspective of peace journalism. The aim of this thesis is to examine the journalistic tendencies that are applied in the selection and processing of events related to the Cyprus conflict in the Czech media. These are used in a quantitative content analysis focusing on the occurrence of these predefined frames in Czech print newspapers. In the interpretation of the results, the correspondences or differences with these studies are...
Bipartisanship of US journalism on the example of media coverage of the 2022 midterm election
Strnad, David ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the relationship between American media and politics, particularly the partisan leaning of mainstream US media towards Republicans or Democrats. General media and political theories are introduced and then applied to a specific framework of the development of relationship between US media and political systems. It was necessary to include terms from political theory for completeness of the studied phenomenon which in itself is influenced by both media and politics. The thesis also draws on the hypothesis presented in Four Theories of the Press arguing that media reflect the social and therefore political system in which they operate. Hence, terms as media bias, agenda-setting or framing are accompanied by descriptions of a two-party system or the study of a general relationship between politics and the media. The thesis also offers overviews of the historical development of American politics and the media's relationship towards partisanship. The division of mainstream US media to two groups based on their appeal towards one of the parties is demonstrated not only by describing current analytical projects but also by own research. A quantitative content analysis with qualitative elements analyses and compares the thematic and genre representation of the online...
The Omission of Coercion: A Framing and Source Analysis of the Media Coverage of Religious Conversions in India
John, Arshu ; Neag, Annamária (advisor) ; Lábová, Sandra (referee)
In India, the phenomenon of religious conversion is a deeply political act, rooted in a history of caste discrimination, Hindu nationalism and religious conflicts. Despite a constitutional protection of the freedom of religion, conversions rarely seen as a personal decision, especially when it concerns Hinduism. A pre-Independence, majoritarian resistance to conversions have persisted, and manifested in numerous anti-conversion laws that prescribe a protectionist caution to conversions. Since the election of Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014, Hindu nationalism-or Hindutva-has seen a sharp surge across social, political and public spheres. Under Modi, India has also witnessed a drop in press freedom in the country. This paper studied the media coverage of religious conversions in India during Modi's first term, from May 2014 to May 2019. It adopted a frame analysis and source analysis to study 250 articles from four mainstream English newspapers-Times of India, Indian Express, The Hindu and The Telegraph. The analysis found the 'Conflict' frame and the political elite sources remained most prevalent. However, the analysis also pointed to the role of Hindu nationalism in the media coverage of religious conversions.

Crisis exploitation coverage: Comparative analysis of 2 unprecedented crises
Strnadová, Kristýna ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis explores the phenomenon of media exploitation of crisis events in selected Czech media, using the media crisis exploitation theory as a conceptual framework. Using the examples of two unprecedented crises, the Covid-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic and the ammonium nitrate explosion in Lebanon, this study analyses the diversion of two Czech media outlets, BLESK and Mladá fronta DNES, from journalistic norms and standards across four dimensions: journalistic style, framing of the crisis, the balance of political sources, and tone of reporting. The selected media failed to provide journalistic standards in times of crisis as the study proved a substantial deviation from these standards, with a predominance of descriptive journalistic style using issue-framing when constructing the crisis image, unbalanced use of political actors as sources of information favoring the governmental parties, and lacking the critical point of view on the political leaders portraying them in neutral or positive tone. The analysis also reveals that there was a greater shift from journalistic standards in the case of the Covid-19 pandemic and in the case of the tabloid BLESK. Overall, the study underscores the active role that media organizations play in creating possibilities for media crisis...
How to ask for donations: an experimental approach to fundraising on social media
Hamrová, Alžběta ; Vranka, Marek (advisor) ; Houdek, Petr (referee)
The objective of this thesis was to compare the effectiveness of different psychological effects used in fundraising and to determine which ones are most effective in motivating people to donate in a digital landscape. The research consisted of a field experiment that tested the following elements of charity appeals using social media ads of the organisation UNICEF Czech Republic: gain and loss framing, message type (statistical or anecdotal information), and the use of inclusive or exclusive language. Based on the data, there were no statistically significant differences in the donation intention using the above methods. Thus, for the most part, the results did not support the findings of previous laboratory experiments, which is subsequently set in the broader context of replicability of social science studies. The thesis highlights the importance of retaining some degree of detachment when implementing strategies based on findings from laboratory research into practice. There are reasons to be cautious, both because of the publication bias and because of the diverse conditions in which research takes place, which may influence the effectiveness of particular fundraising tactics. The main contribution of this paper lies in the high ecological validity of the field experiment and the subsequent...
Framing of the situation in Mariupol in the news coverage of Novinky.cz, Blesk.cz and Deník.cz
Vokoun, Filip ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Moravec, Václav (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the presentation of the siege of Mariupol on three Czech online news sites. A sample of 500 texts from the year 2022 was used to examine how the selected media framed the news about the situation in the city. This research was supplemented with findings from thematic narrative analysis and other examined variables, such as the topics of the texts or the actors quoted. The thesis is divided into three parts - theoretical, methodological, and analytical. The theoretical part introduces the concept of framing in news reporting and presents the general frames and thematic and episodic framing examined in the thesis. This part continues by introducing narrative in war coverage and reviewing narratives occurring in the media in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The methodological part introduces the quantitative and qualitative research methods used in this thesis, the studied news media, and the sample of texts. The analytical part of the paper then presents the results of the analysis, which indicate an anti-Russian position of all the media studied. All the media examined presented the situation similarly, treating it primarily as a humanitarian disaster. The suffering of civilians and Ukrainian soldiers associated with the war was often presented through...
Media image of Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar in selected press from the period of split of Czechoslovakia
Matějková, Kristýna ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
Czechoslovakia underwent a challenging transition from a communist regime to a democratic system in the 1990s. Some Slovak citizens perceived this period as their chance to seek emancipation. This desire, nourished by some political figures, started the division process of the Czechoslovak federation, which resulted in a series of bargaining between the two national prime ministers, Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar. The citizens of the federation were waiting to see how their protracted meetings would unfold. And the only intermediary that could regularly bring them information, were the media. Nevertheless, through its important role of informing the public, the media also has a considerable power to influence what people consider important and what they think about. The way in which the media covered all events that led to the breakup may have had an effect on the public opinion on the existence of Czechoslovakia. This diploma thesis offers a view on how selected Czechoslovak press in 1992 portrayed the main characters of the final split of Czechoslovakia, focusing on the perception of Václav Klaus in Slovak media and Vladimír Mečiar in Czech media.
