Soukupová, Michala ; Hrdlička, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Lášek, Jan Blahoslav (referee)
Diploma thesis "Zdislava of Lemberk - Life and Work" delas with whole life and work of St. Zdislava of Lemberk based on the available information provided by the existing literature. It also tries to create a comprehensive overview of her multifaceted life, activites and service for the Czech nation based on the information about her family, especially her mother Sibyla of Křižanov and her husband Havel of Lemberk. It tries to confirm the thesis that although there is not much direct information about Zdislava of Lemberk, she certainly represented an expectional personality with unique characteristics for her time. The first chapter of this work describes the time of medieval Bohemia, in which Zdislava of Lemberk lived and represented herself to the Czech people at that time. The second chapter delas with Church orders, especially the Dominican order with which Zdislava of Lemberk is still associated today. The third chapter deals with the life of Zdislava's parents and husband and their activites in the Czech surroundings, which it also associates with the personality of Zdislava. The fourth chapter deals with Zdislava of Lemberk and her life journey. It focuses on her church work and social work, her role as a woman in family and public life, and the processes that led to her beatification and...
Henry of Carinthia. Transformation of historians's perception of his rule.
Horáková, Jana ; Charvátová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Sládková, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with view on the figure of Henry of Carinthia, whose image was usually unflattering in the works of Czech historians. This view of Henry is based on an important source, the Zbraslav Chronicle, which, among other things, also describes the period when Henry of Carinthia governed in the Kingdom of Bohemia (1306-1310). For a long time, Zbraslav Chronicle was considered as a set of true testimonies. The author of the Zbraslav Chronicle, very influential Cistercian Petr Žitavský, acted as a direct witness to the events described, and also due to some almost diary-like entries in certain parts of the chronicle, no one doubted the relevance of his entries. In other chronicles, Czech historians adopt the perspective of the author of the Zbraslav Chronicle, as they consider it a reliable source. Thus, Henry of Carinthia entered the consciousness of the majority based on the description of Petr Žitavský, as a weak monarch without vision and the necessary skills of a successful ruler. At the beginning of the 21st century, Jakub Razim came up with a new perspective on the Zbraslav Chronicle and thereby influenced the subsequent work of other historians. The aim of this thesis is not only the analysis of the passages devoted to the figure of Henry in the Zbraslav Chronicle, but...
Law of boundaries and its rituals in the era of Přemyslids
Razim, Jakub ; Starý, Marek (advisor) ; Šouša, Jiří (referee)
BORDER LAW AND ITS RITUALS IN THE PŘEMYSLID ERA ABSTRACT: In an attempt to reach a comprehensive understanding of medieval people whose entire lives were anchored in a culture of legal customs, it is only natural that law and its rituals should come into view. Rituals governed society and co-created people's ideas of what was once perceived as right and just. In the present work, we have chosen the period of the Přemyslids as our time frame and, from the wide variety of legal rituals, we have focused on circuits. As the Czech terms ochoz and objezd suggest, this was a traditional behavior that consisted of arranging a procession on foot or horseback, taking place ceremoniously before the eyes of an audience from near and far. The aim of this practice, widely used throughout Europe, was to identify and secure the boundaries within which people were allowed to exercise dominion or ownership over their formally circumscribed territory. After we have presented a succinct overview of the legal historiography that touches our topic, the source base will attract our attention. Given that from the Přemyslid age, that is, before 1306, neither codes of law nor learned treatises on law are available, there is no choice but to turn our eyes elsewhere. Sometimes brief, sometimes more eloquent details of boundary law...
History of the Slavonic Monastery in the Hussite Time between 1419-1442
Pohunek, Michal ; Kubín, Petr (advisor) ; Čechura, Jaroslav (referee)
Bc. Michal Pohunek: Dějiny kláštera Na Slovanech za husitství v letech 1419 - 1442 Abstract History of the Slavonic Monastery in the Hussite Period between 1419 - 1442 This thesis describes the history of the Slavonic monastery, situated in Nové Město in Prague, and later also known as Emaus. My thesis concerns the period of the Hussite revolt between 1419-1442. At that period Holy Communion in the Slavonic monastery was offered to lay people in the utraquist mode - i.e., both bread and wine - and the monastic community became a part of the Hussite movement. The goals of this thesis are primarily theological, in line with the discipline of church history. First I want to contribute to the understanding of the spiritual and religious atmosphere in the whole of the Czech kingdom of that historical period, by describing its particular history in the Slavonic monastery. Second I would like to contribute to the comprehension of the possibility of Benedictine monastic life in the context of the Hussite movement and the influence of the utraquist monastery on the religious evolution of the time. This needs knowledge of the situation in the monastic community and its neighbourhood in that time. To understand the theological orientation of the monastic community in that period it is necessary to describe the...
Evolution and Form of the three-aisle hall type layout in Bohemian sacral architecture to the mid-15th century
Beránek, Jan ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Macek, Petr (referee) ; Benešovská, Klára (referee)
Evolution and form of the three-aisle hall type layout in Bohemian sacral architecture to the mid-15th century The hall church with two, three and rarely more aisles in German described as "Hallenkirche" is usually defined as having the aisles of the same or almost the same height as opposed to the basilica. With this type of organization the main nave is lit only indirectly because there is no space for basilica type windows. Other variants or transitional types are pseudohalls, sometimes also called pseudobasilicas (in German terminology Staffenhalle and Stufenhalle), which differ from the main type by having an elevated nave without the aforementioned direct light sources. These distinctions stem from a thought construct of art history which strives for strict taxonomy in their source material. The diversity of medieval architecture nevertheless proves that there is cannot be drawn a clear and decisive line between the basilical and hall type layouts, just as the distinction between the longitudinal and central floor plans. This is connected to the cultural semantics of the different types and the even more complicated question of the intentions of the choice. The hall type is spread all across medieval Europe from the Romanesque era to the end of the Middle Ages. This type of architecture was...
Cribra orbitalia - prevalence and coincidence with another signs of diseases on skeleton. Medieval findings from the Czech Republic territory.
Poláková, Veronika ; Likovský, Jakub (advisor) ; Brůžek, Jaroslav (referee)
Cribra orbitalia represents one of the most frequent bone pathologies in skeletal remains of past populations. This lesion is characterised by porous, furrowed even trabecular disruption on the outer table of the compact bone on the orbital roof. Although the origin of cribra orbitalia is linked to marrow hyperplasia as a consequence of iron deficiency anemia, even other causes are not ruled out. Both occurences cribra orbitalia alone and coincidence with other signs of diseases have been recorded. Research of this study applies to cribra orbitalia as a long- term stress indicator on the skeleton and a symptom of specific diseases or anemic syndroms. Skeletal remains from Czech medieval sites with presence of cribra orbitalia as well as whole graveyard from Oškobrh were analysed. Macroscopical investigation did not demonstrate periodic coincidence of cribra orbitalia and specific bone signs of the diseases. However, the following bone changes have been observed: hyperostosis porotica, increased vascularization, supranasal porosity, inflammatory- hemorrhagic reaction on the endocranium which can in terms of differential diagnosis help to clarify the nature and/or cause of the origin of cribra orbitalia. Comparison of the population from Oškobrh with other medieval graveyards showed that frequency of...
